Again, not to put down anything , but a 25 km ride an equivalent of a marathon for bikes (as the site suggests) ? A little far fetched, to put it a little mildly. If this event adds a few bikers to the biking population in the city , nothing like it, but I can't see myself going for this one

Agree. And this event made quite a few of my friends buy cycles and start riding. Even though I hate what they've bought and how they're showing it off on fb saying they're pledging their life for green by riding for 25km, (duh) i have to admit that i like the cyclothon to the extent that it encourages atleast some people to do some cycling that may someday change a small part of how we live .

That being said, I'm not attending this because its just not for people like me. I'd much rather ride 10km on some single track, have oily food and call it a day. On that note, i wanna go on my mtb to hesarghatta and do some singletrack cycling. Anyone game?

Regards,
Shankar

Ok a lot of people were having the empty hydration bag from wildcraft
without the bladder. Not sure what others did I gave it to friends with
a bladder from decathlon after I got my camelbak! :)

They also gave a piece of plastic+cushion, that they called a helmet :)

the marathon equivalent of cycling would be 180km i guess, going by the distances in an Ironman

But, the cyclothon does convert a lot of on-the-fence people into biking..... So, no complaints.... It was heartening to see so many people on cycles

However, i would still not do the cyclothon, because of all the chaos

Hi,
i just participate in Cyclothon for the sheer energy and
enthusiasm....that is in the number of people who participate in that
event....distance as such never matters, on that day it is fun,
excitement, inspiration, motivation.....i stay in Girinagar going to
whitefield, taking part in cyclo and back home will be a decent
distance [75 kms....]

very truly,

Sorry to point out but my two cents worth is that 180km cannot be called a marathon equivalent. Running a full marathon requires a lot more effort, grit, perseverance and will than riding 180 km on cycle. Running and cycling are two different sports where drawing parallel is not easy.

try to do the 180 km at a 30 kmph speed (without pacelining), and it might feel closer to the running effort

In any case, i'm not trying to compare it.... I'm trying to only point out how far away they are from the equivalent

p.s: i'm an ultramarathoner myself, and know how hard running long distance is....

It was not a "basic helmet" last time around, it was a "pretend helmet". The hydration bag without the hydration insert was in itself great value for money!

But then guys, let's take this in the right spirit. It's a fun ride, it encourages bicycling, it aims to bring the change that we as a group desire for. I say bring it on!!!

Cyclothons have been bad for the elite group so far. Blr cyclothon saw the pile up in 2009. Thanks to Chennai cyclothon, we had one of the funniest ride reports I have ever read: https://groups.google.com/group/bangalore-bikers/browse_thread/thread/6cd324fd23e72827, I hope the elite group ride is organized better.

Let's not compare the two sports.
You can not have a marathon on cycle :)

It will be easier for someone to run Marathon distance than rising
180Kms, for some other it could be the other way around.

As for me, 3 year back it was easier to do 42Kms run that a century
ride. Then it became the other way, where we started doing double and
triple century ride. If you ask me now, it is difficult for me to run
a full marathon.
