Hello All,

I wanted to buy a Thule 9104 for my Hyundai i10 Automatic. I was told that the bicycle cannot be mounted unless the Spoiler was removed first.

I went to Advaith Motors and tried removing the spoiler. We found that there are 4 Two Rupee Coin size holes when the spoiler is removed. Advaith strongly recommended not removing the spoiler because water could get inside the rear hatch during rains and reduce the re-sale value of the car. I half-heartedly had them put the Spoiler back on :-(

Now, I am not sure how to go about getting a bicycle rack on my i10. Have any of you out there been in my boat? How did you deal with it? Did you buy a different bike rack? Looking for advise.

Thanks,
Yogesh

In Thule catalog I saw there are are some racks for the towbar. I don't know the feasibility of the same but you can always try.

Link for same is http://www.thule.com/en/IN/Products/BikeCarriers.aspx and select towbar racks.

out of the four holes, the two on the extremes will not cause water to
enter the hatch. the other two and also the fifth hole
where the wires for the breaklights on the spoiler come out will allow
water to first enter the door and then from the door
inside the car( this is the case with factory fitted spoiler, atleast
on older hyndai i10 versions)

You need a size 10 spanner to remove the screws.. the rack is 9103,
which fits perfect. 9104 can be used without removing
the spoiler but instead of the weight being transferred to the door
through the arms of the rack, they will come on to the spoiler and
probably
in the case of 3 bikes either break the spoiler or bent it.

I am guessing that we can use a larger size cello tape to close the
holes, when we use the rack. This should work fine.

In case you want to sell the car, you can take it to service center
and ask them to redo the spoiler fittings which will include using
sealing tapes(which in your case have anyway come off because they
have been removed once).. This is what I think might work
out.

That looks like the Thule 964 strap mount. Will this also require me to remove the spoiler?

Justin, thanks for that detailed explanation. How do you know so much? Have you done this on your car?

Why don't you get hold of some rubber blanking plugs for the four
exposed holes. Something like this :

http://www.rosshandling.co.uk/plugs-grommets.asp
or
http://in.rsdelivers.com/product/rs/52006120/blanking-plug-nylon-m20-male-thread/4069328.aspx

I'm sure you can get some locally from an auto accessories store.

Such plugs are used extensively in electrical and electronic housings/
racks to blank out/close exposed holes.

Cheers,

Anool

In case you want to sell the car? Really? For a bike rack? Thats insane!

Go for a roof top bike rack. Don't spoil or sell the car.

And no matter how much you hate your car do not underestimate water damage and leave open holes or seal it with some flimsy tapes. Your car, or any car in which your family might travel, deserves more than that!

Ot - For whatever its worth, advaith has been useless everytime i had any query or service or issues. You will be better off going to trident. And hats off to people who can live with holes or removable (or not) rubber stockings on their cars!! Not sarcastic. I could never do such a thing to my car. Not even for my bike rack.

I want to understand whether there is some strong reason that prevents you guys from putting on roof mounted bike racks? Are they dangerous on road? Or does the roof top bike rack also come in the way of your spoiler?

It's been the cost vs convenience in my case (Mr.69, please don't get me wrong, I know it costs money to manufacture the roof mounts). I have had difficulty convincing other decision making units within the family to spend 15k for mounting 3 bikes on a car. Esp. when one could do the same with a rear mount and without having to drill any holes in the car.

I am willing to try the rubber blanking plug idea. Especially, if it costs Rs.20 for 10 of them. I will happily buy enough so that I can put a new one even when one gets stolen :-)

Roof racks are better, IMO.

Oh. Dint know the cost bit about roof racks. And rubber plugs is still a bad idea though you will have the option of putting your spoiler back on

Can't you just take it to a body shop and just get the "holes" filled in with fiberglass and then painted?

Then you wont get rain and you can use your rack.

I have a great Trunk Rack, the Saris Bones RS. Probably the best out
there, but if I were doing it again, I would go the roof rack route.

If you do want a Trunk Rack, check out the RS. Steel straps, and
mounts and dismounts in 5 seconds, so you always put it inside the car
when you are away.

Trunk rack will guaranteed damage paint over time. I dont care as my
car is about 13 years old, but I would hesitate to use it on my 'good'
car. [Not fair actually, as my 13 year old car is great ;-)].

I did use it once on the 'good' car though [to Ooty], and with lots of
socks etc protecting the car. Still had some paint damage on the
bumpers of a brand new car.

Also, bikes are safer on the roof.

Hmm, interesting.

Question for the roof mounted owners and Mr.69. Let's say I buy the roof mounted rack now and choose to sell my i10 in a year and a half. Can I remove the roof mounted rack at that time and use it on a different car? I am pretty sure I may end up upgrading in about a year to year and a half.

A dumb question may be!

Doesnt the cycle fit in the boot after dismanting the tyres, and may be the handlebar. Or folding the rear seats?

I normally fit my firefox into the boot of an esteem, just removing the tyres, no seats folded.
So, I am assuming for a hatchback, if you fold the seats , you can fit in pretty much any cycle

And yes, only 1 cycle though.

Which firefox? I can't fit my rr 5.2 18" frame unless i fold the rear seat in my accent. Wonder how you can fit an mtb (i'm guessing) in your esteem's boot. My 5.2 incidentally came home in my dad's esteem with only room for 2 human beings inside the car.
Where do you stay? I wanna check out how you store your bike in the boot if you don't mind.

You should be able to use it .. just need to change the clamp set to
the one used for the new car's roof carrier .. Mr.69 should be able to
make the necessary changes.. as he does it the best.

I have had the kynkyny rack for some time now and am really satisfied
with it. I have peace of mind when I approach junctions, metro work ,
and narrow roads as I don't have to worry about some one coming from
rear and banging on to my bike.

Badri
