Buddies,
Apart from Elevated or tolled flyovers, i dont understand why cycles are not allowed on some flyovers.
While returning from BOTS, i noticed this "no cyclist" traffic sign on the Jayadeva flyover.
Just wanted to know whats the rational behind preventing this.

Rgds,
Nalla.

Could be

a ) Govt thinks cyclist are slow riders and hence might be a problem for those fast 2 wheelers and 4 wheelers.

>>> They should know that some of the BBChers zoom in around 40 or 50 kmph sometimes.

b ) Social status. Flyovers might be only for elite ( car and 2 wheelers )

>>> They should know that the kind of cycles most of us use are in the range of 25k - 80k.

One of the flyovers on the ORR, between Marathahalli & Hebbala has
this too.

TBH I think some traffic separation is logical. You and I (mostly
you, actually) can climb that at 30 kmph but most cyclists can't/won't.
For eg the Hebbal flyover has exits on the left towards Tumkur and
were the cyclist to stay slow and on the left he'd block that exit.
Happened to me multiple times.

And if heavy goods vehicles were to lose speed breaking for a slow
cyclist on the left while climbing a flyover, gaining the same
momentum would be close to impossible for their archaic engines.

Abhishek,

Its not about the speed. The so called heavy goods vehicles ( lorries ) should not enter the city limits ( look @ other cities ).
When we don't allow them where is this question of loosing speed by breaking for a slow rider ?

I would agree to segregating slow traffic, IF they also prohibit
autos, and the same slow trucks which can barely make it up.

True, they are slow (as acknowledged in last post) and shouldn't be
allowed. But there are vested interests in getting trucks to ply on
city roads and there are people ready to grease hands to keep that
status quo. It is wrong, I do not contend that.

I think that the reason is - most of these flyovers are narrow. It barely allows two vehicles, one up and one down to go smoothly. To overtake a cyclist, a vehicle will have to give space between himself and the cycle, and he may have to intrude into the side permitted for the on coming traffic, which can be problematic for the oncoming traffic. When there are multiple lanes - each way, on a flyover, then again, many a time, each lane is narrow. If a cyclist is on one lane, a vehicle cannot overtake the cyclist if there is another vehicle going in the same direction on the other lane. It is also difficult for a cyclist (at least in my case) to keep a straight line, especially while climbing up an incline on a flyover. He may sway about and this can endanger his life.

This is my interpretation, I could be wrong.

On the NICE road, cyclists can be allowed. Perhaps we can petition or use our good offices. They have a dedicated two wheeler lane. There is a sign on the EC side, stating that pedestrians and autos are not allowed on NICE road. What will they stop next - stray dogs?

Thanks buddies for sharing your thoughts.
I guess it boils down slow speed mainly. And at times to flyover been narrow to allow smooth flow of motorised vehicles.

All these mainly apply to single speed cycles, not to geared bikes.

As per law, even we bikers riding geared bikes are cyclist, but i guess i will end up breaking that rule everytime :)
Who wants to stop in signals and inhale more pollution when you can go smoothly over it by taking the flyover path ;)

Hey hi nalla bhai :-)

I use to ride bsk 3rd stage to silk board almost every day morning 5:30 I use to cross Jayadeva flyover... Never noticed it though as I was busy riding fast :-P

I had done my top speed 68 something in electronic city flyover too :-P amazing stretch...

If u follow the rule book then all the best... Just take care of ur self and ur bike...ride where ever u want too :-)

Just be very careful when u jump a signal coz the roads r empty or u don't to inhale more pollution...(I do it always with super caution)

I was even asked to pay a fine of Rs.300 for riding on electronic city flyover...I was like I'm so sorry I dint even notice the board I'm new to the city...even akshay was there with me..:-P

Bangalore is lovely city for cyclist..:-) enjoy madi macha :-) soon we will see bangalore becoming cycling capital for india...

I cross over from koramangala to indranagar and viceversa. The alternate would be the u-turns at Manipal hospital and Domlur! Airport road would be a bummer I guess!

Hey Viju,

Myself and Mano were riding on EC flyover towards Silkboard on the week previous to Brevets. It was part of our return ride to Krishnagiri Dam!
Nobody stopped/questioned us ... it was between 8:30pm and 9pm.

Yup when ur coming back you can very well take tht route, but while going to electronic city u can't coz the road is like a downward slope which ends at toll both n guys r standing there...

While coming back come in the main road after the tool both u can pick ur bike n start riding in the toll road after climbing the foot path..

And while coming back the traffic is comparatively less..

But be careful guys :-)

Thanks Viju bhai, i am careful whenever i ride yaar.. you never know how other folks sharing the road behave (including motorised vehicles, humans, cows, dogs etc ) ;)

I rode once on the Elevated flyover on Hosur road.. it was during the 400 km Brevet. I was with Akshay P and we were planning to ride till A2B, Krishnagiri to accompany the brevet riders till TS1.
It wasn't Akshay's day that day.. he had a flat at start point and then on top of the elevated flyover :) We swapped the tube and then came down. The security folks on the toll booth asked us to lift our bikes and join the main road instead of riding through the toll plaza.

I have used Hebbal flyover quite often and try to move past the exits
as fast as possible.

If cows can leisurely stroll on the ring road and crossover,
Why can't bicyclists take a flyover !

However, I have had problems with the gaps in the road (that were left
for expansion?). My tire has slipped into the gap leading to a fall.

Regards,

Manu

First trucks now cows, we cyclists really need to find better role
