Just out. Does someone still think that this is "business as usual"
and that people will keep driving motor vehicles as usual??
I think at some point the term "Peak Oil" will enter the discourse of
mainstream media discussions even if it hasn't....till now.

yeah petrol price hiked by 7.50 INR.

someone in my office already asked me about buying bikes.

sad that people want to ride a bike because they can't afford petrol. if tmrw petrol price drops like crazy and becomes 30 INR per litre while income is NOT affected then will everyone jump on motorbikes? wonder what then will be the life of folks who ride a bike because they love riding bikes.

Vasu,

Overall, Price hike of Petroleum products is not fair.

It affects life in general, everything becomes expensive. But on this forum, expect a flurry of mails now, in support/against this hike :)

Cycling is not the only thing, that life runs on :)

Cheers !

If every TDH starts riding a motorbike the avg speed of traffic is only going to go further down for doctors and otherwise!:) Bikers continue to slip thru traffic. I am more worried about BBMP eating up footpaths and trees which directly affect us.

Deja vu guys. All this hue and cry happened even when our beloved petrol turned 50. Now its turned 80, soon it will get to 100. Get used to it. If you worry about 7 rupees per litre, you're probably not worth driving a car. Btw, this also means that petrol cars will get cheaper because of awesome discounts. Yay!!

Lets do the math. If you're driving 600kms a month and your car gives you a mileage of 10kmpl, you're using up 60lts of petrol. This hike means an extra expenditure of 450 rupees per month to you. In my not so humble opinion, if you cant spend 450 rupees more on your car's fuel every month, you probably don't deserve to drive it.

Disclaimer : I drive a petrol car which gives a mileage of 10kmpl :P

Yesterday for some reason after very long time I was forced (I commute by bicycle....I will do that even if petrol price becomes Rs. 10....) to go in Volvo from Girinagar to White field, because needed to come back by car after the meeting with senior colleague of mine to discuss on professional matters.

It took 1 hour 45 mnts, it was peak hour. Spent a good amount on reading book which I needed to catch up. If you ask me it was the most irritating reaching white field sitting inside volvo.

It was such a re-inforcement of the joy what I was getting commuting to work.
All the while I was only wondering what is that is driving people to go through such pain of commuting by other means.

Very truly,

@Shankar
Your analysis is really naive. You think effects of this will be
linear? As someone mentioned above, oil prices effect everything so
everything becomes pricier. It's a multiplier effect not just a simple
a + b. For people living on 100 Rs daily, an increase of 200-300 pm
(groceries + commute + services) is very high. At some point prices
won't just climb in stairstep, there will be rationing, oil companies
might go bankrupt and the economy will go back to depression. If we go
by your analysis even if petrol goes to Rs 200/ltr birds should
continue to sing, real world doesn't work that way :)

@vasu
Petrol ain't going back to Rs 30, you can take that from me, not
without a 1930's like depression. I have spent hundreds of hours over
the past two years looking through the data, and the results are
humbling. Oil supplies are peaking everywhere, this is not a temporary
phenomenon.

Also one should learn to accept human nature, we don't do things
without some kind of push, if you expect people to give up on motor
vehicles voluntarily, you can dream on. Very few of us understand and
accept the consequences of our actions, you are probably one of the
INTJ or some rare psychological type individuals like many here on
BBC.

Now all one should do is stopping their engines in traffic signals to save that extra drop of fuel....and a pat on our back for driving a cycle and being resistant to such hikes...

I believe this is an indication that people should stick to public transport rather than driving a car/bike thereby reducing congestion on roads.

Vineet, Agreed on the part of people earning Rs.100 daily. But is that our target audience here? I'm sure 99% of BBC members earn WAY more than that. I understand that not everything can be factored by math. There are people who drive 3000kms a month too. What about them? I'm just saying that it is not as catastrophic as people make it out to be. People just scream and shout about it for a day and return to their normal lives later as if nothing happened. If you can show me 10 people who will start taking the bus from tomorrow because of this price hike and continue to do so after 6 months, I'll gift you two new presta tubes :P

PS : I don't know about birds though. Most birds may go extinct by the time petrol touches 200 :P

Shankar
Point taken. I was not arguing for a Mad Max scenario either, not
saying that roads will be empty tomorrow. Just that small things add
up to a big change later on.
It may very well be that oil consumption will go up as a result of
rising wealth but for every person buying a car 10 poor people are now
effectively priced out from buying a luna. As far as cycling goes,
costly petrol translates to higher converts to the bike religion. Amen

It's like a forest fire, we already had the fire, now we got the wind
on our back. Maybe tomorrow I can convince a few more guys in office
to buy a bike.

Yes. That is half the point I'm driving home. This is a small thing and should be treated as such. There's no point treating this minor price increase like the plague when we have bigger things to worry about. The other half of the point is that there are of course some positive things that come out of this situation. We should look at those too than just screaming from rooftops that this price rise has ruined our life.

Once you convert those people, more than half of those people will get serious, get way better bikes, start investing in high end racing components and ultimately wonder if they even saved money. Just don't let them realise this right now ;)

It's happening everywhere. Good news is it'll reduce consumption, congestion, pollution.

I do still feel for people who can't afford to drive to work.

All,

@Vineet: hours poring over data? sounds like an analyst to me, I should get in touch with you :) Thanks for the INTJ, I take it as a compliment. Been ages I got a good one.

@Shankar: Will more people ride a bicycle because of price hike? don't think so. They only need to be told how much a new bar tape costs or a new Rubino tyre and they'll get back to motorised vehicles.

@Anil: Volvo commute is good man. Gives you so much free time. If you can find a seat from the time you get on till the time you get off WITHOUT getting disturbed then it is a good time to catch up on sleep too :)

My commute today got spoilt thanks to a mad mad traffic. Everyone had piled up in front of petrol pumps. It was like if they fill up before midnight they'll become rich with a total saving of 200 - 300 bucks. Assuming motor biker fills 10l petrol, he will save 75 INR. Which IMO is not worth the: a) wait b) queue c) honking d) swearing e) staying out for 40 mins to save 75 bucks.

Let's close the topic now. We will ride our bikes. They can do whatever they feel like.

V

btw, I have been commuting on a mtb for the past few days. ahem. but i won't compare mtb commute with roadie commute because i won't want to sound biased.

This is OT for the BBC.

If you go by international pricing, the hike of petrol prices is not unfair. We are slowly getting to the correct cost of petrol. Most petroleum products in the country are subsidised heavily. The Govt owned oil firms are subsidised so that they can sell fuel at low prices. This subsidy accounts for about 0.5 to 0.8% (maybe more) of our GDP. The money for this subsidy comes from our taxes (Income tax, sales tax, fuel cess etc) which are paid by almost everyone - rich or poor. So, while it seems awesome way to have low prices, it is a poor strategy.

The increase is only on Petrol and not on diesel, which is the most widely used fuel for all transport vehicles.. So if the overall prices go up, it's opportunistic than a reality. You can be rest assured auto guys will charge you more coz petrol prices went up even though they don't use Petrol to run their autos..

The math may not be accurate but the thinking certainly is !

What frustrates me is the attitude of this government (Any for that matter) to increase petrol prices time and again and let all those riding fancy diesel cars at a much subsidised rates..

Subsidizing the cost of essentials like LPG, petrol, diesel has been
prevalent for decades. The present increase in petrol is not due to
removal of subsidies.

It is the depreciating rupee which is making ALL imports more costly.
Oil happens to be one of the biggest imports.

However, this also means that imported bicycles will become even more
expensive.

It is a little late, but the govt. should have done more to encourage
hydrid or electric vehicles.

+1. Spot on, Basker. All those people hiking up their prices under the pretext of petrol price rise are opportunists indeed! I read on BZ that some dealers have started increasing prices of Trek bikes by 1200 because of petrol price rise. What a sham!

I saw this too. Was taking a bus home. Would have presented an
interesting opportunity for humour if had been on bike. Just pedal
inside the gas station, "realize" don't need gas, and pedal out :)

I forgot about PETROL prices, the moment I started cycling to office by Bicycle, Instead of car. Most of my weekend trips are on my bike unless my family is coming with me. I love cycles as it saves me lot of time and I spend good time with my kids. No GYM and faster commute than car and over that good sleep at night. What more I need :-)

Some of friends asked me abt the saving bcause of cycling and I had no answer at that time. If I need to calculate, then I will say, it's less than half what it use to be 2 years back.

THank you all cyclist friends

Yup. My maximum expense on fuel is on taking my bike to my start
point.

Having said that, 2 diesels in the family FTW. :-)

Those who are saying petrol prices are coming close to what they should be, I hope they also know that PETROL is taxed at 50% .....So it's the govt policies which are making it so expensive.

FYI GOLD IS TAXED at 5% :-) they are incentivising buying gold, which is dead investment, and no money flows in the economy !!!

I am going to save ~240 per day from now!
Assuming 22 days of commute per month, I'll save like 5k a month!

Same thing. I don't cycle to save money. I rather cycle to save time.
It is always predictable in time. Besides, I never have to worry about
car parking.

About saving money, I think my road bike is making me spend enough
money to compensate the saving my commute bike is giving me :-D That
is a totally fun thing, so, I'm not complaining.

Every time fuel price is increased ... how much of energy is spent discussing about it ... which can be used for accomplishing something ... ?  :-)

Everyone is free to discuss ... but still ... "Save energy" is universal ( isn't it ... ?  )

Just a thought ...  :-)
