Hey guys,
I am new to carrying bikes on Airlines and need some inputs here.  I have a Trek 3700 2008 model and want to carry it to Melbourne via Singapore Airlines. Not sure how much my bike weighs, not sure who can pack the bike for me and extra charges and stuff. Your inputs much appreciated.

Thanks,
Naveen

I wanted to do this once from the US to India on Singapore Airlines. Their customer service assured me that weight is not an issue as long as it doesn't exceed the standard limit. However, the dimensions were going to an issue, since they insisted that the dimensions (W+D+H) should be within limits, and per my calculation, it couldn't be. I finally didn't get the bike, so can't say how the ground staff would have reacted. Some times the customer service follows the written word, but the ground staff can be more accommodating.

Btw, their website has all the rules written quite clearly, so you can check on that as well.

Cheers,
Namit

Any LBS might be able to help you pal the bike.
may weight around 16-18kg post packing(try&keep it minimal. Bubble wraps might help)
Ensure you have deflated the tyres before packing.

Happy journey

If you're taking it one way, it is usually not worth the trouble. Just sell it here and buy the same or better bike at the other end.

Yes. For an entry level bike such as the one you're planning on, it definitely doesn't make sense to lug it across continents.

There is a certain emotional value attached to it, So difficult to sell it.. Will consider it though.  Thank you.

Ah, in that case, you're better off bagging/boxing it than rolling it into the airport.

It is best to log on to the website of the airlines, print out the documentation which specifies weight/size limits, make sure your shipment conforms to it and carry the print out with you while traveling. Needless to say, reaching the airport early with atleast an hour or two extra to sort out issues will work in your favour, as would calling ahead and getting a confirmation on the phone. Make sure to look specifically for bicycles/sports equipment as it may override any other general additional baggage rules. Good luck.

Calling ahead is pointless. They almost never agree on the phone, and even if they do, you have no proof. My experience is that it is best to take a printout of the rules, and if in violation, sweet talking is the best option.
