saw this on FB:
"he is no more and the people around india don't even know his contribution to the nation .i want that everyone should get to know about this sikh. his record was :"PRITAM SINGH KHALSA" :: it was in 1993 when his name was included in the Guinness Book of World Records for covering 5,000 km from Mumbai to Hoshiarpur and back in 14 days.

IS THIS TRUE? ANYONE KNOW OF THIS?

Probably back then would be lot more difficult, considering the bike available.
It averages to 357 kms per day for those 14 days (RAAM is quite close, no doubt more tougher due to terrain).

That got him the name in Guinness world book of records, super cool.

What effort is needed to get the same now?

That's 15 kmph non-stop for 14 days. Crazy endurance.

He apparently did it on a Atlas Gold Line :)

Hard to find a proper citation for the Guiness Book, and can't locate
his name there either.

http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/Search.aspx?q=cycling

The most accurate citation is for "most km cycled in a day", but
that's over 900km by Marko Baloh, familiar to those who've watched
Bicycle Dreams :)

Lot of claims about this athlete, very little facts that stand up to
scrutiny. Somebody should put up the certificate that the GB issues
online.

Yes, all those claims of London-Glasgow, etc. are everywhere. In one
place it is 13:55, in the Tribune it is 13:19, all requiring an
average of > 48kmph -- London to Glasgow is 411 miles (~660ish km)

That article says he's won his eighth gold medal in the 100km road
race at the World Masters Championships Edmonton Canada 2005.

There was no such event at the WMC in 2005.

The only road race is a 5 laps/11 km (total 55km) route where he did
participate, but was lapped (after 1 lap?) and therefore eliminated.

The winner Visser Roberts was 55km in 1:47 (around 27kmph) -- at 70,
that is seriously respectable.

The Way Back Machine is seriously awesome. Somebody should get human
interest reporters to do some basic fact checking.

The correct phrasing is: "dunno what is true and what is not"

People can always believe whatever they want ;)

As in.. dunna what is true and what is not.. but I think that another
Singh, Bhagat Singh went on hunger strike for more number of days(116
days continuously in one instance) than Gandhi.. Just that Bhagat was
hanged at 23 and Ghandhi was aged 78, when fatally shot. Only the
promoted truth survives, Pritam Singh Khalsa should have used a Trek
or Cannondale and defintely the latest carbon bike and should
definitely have done it in association with his local Bikers club and
then we would have all had an opportunity for the bike salute and the
roof top meeting.
