Hi,
I was reading about Lance Amstrong cycling Team Astana ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astana_(cycling_team) )how many people know that Astana is the name of the Capital of Kazakhastan a central Asian country part of the fomer USSR (ref http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kazakhstan). If  companies from such a small country can sponsor a team why is there no team from India which is the second most populus country in the world for Tour de France

Imagine if we can take our club "The Bangalore Bikers Club" too the TDF. To this end I wrote too Union Cycliste Internationale the world governing body never thought they would respond but they did. Maybe we can convince Mallaya that there is better chance at having the fastest indian win an international event on the road will be on a bicycle and not in a Formula one race car.

Have a look at the rules too form a professional cycling team the link is given in the email below.

Regards.

Dear Sir,

I inform you that if you want to take part in international events with an amateur team on the UCI Asia Tour, you can register your team as a UCI Continental Team. For more information regarding the registration procedure, you must contact your national federation.

In order to take part in international events with a professional team all over the world on important classes of the Continental events or on events of the World Calendar, your team must be registered as a Professional Continental Team.

You will find more information in the UCI Regulations on the website www.uci.ch under the rubric Rules / Part II : Road Races / Chapter 16 for Professional Continental Teams and Chapter 17 for Continental Teams.

I remain at your disposal for any further questions.

Best regards,

just out of curiosity, why you use "too" everywhere instead of "to", coz the whole grammer is going for a toss...

Why, we already have a couple of fantastic teams in Bangalore itself, Venkatesh runs the Bangalore Bicycling club and Samim is part of Red Rooster Racing. They have competed successfully, not at the topmost level but at the next level. The main hurdle in getting to the next level is finances. We have to realize that most professional sports is all about money, who can spend the most on the best equipment, the best training, the best coaches, the best doping (oops, did I just say that?)

If we can ever lose our obsession with the $#@@$#% blasted game of cricket, you will find lots of sports (including cycling) where our athletes can come up to the highest level with the right amount of equipment, training and competition. We've tried for 60 years to do it under government control, but it has not worked. Hopefully, some private companies will come forward and encourage other sports instead of throwing their money at junk like IPL.

Though I am with you on " laying eggs" part of cricket, that is the
only game in the country which has created superstars and brought the
world cups to the country off late. And the only game where you can
make good money. The game is also well run and marketed by the board
of cricket! So it is natural that ppl follow it passionately in India.
But it sure is a complex game though - it took me ages to understand
why they needed a sight screen :)

The real global game IMO has to be football - if you can spot
exceptional talent in any corner of the world, it is very easy to get
the best of the best clubs interested in them and take them to the
very top!

Sorry to go a bit OT, I for one don't get excited about the racing
events. It is just natural that it(not just cycling but all other
speed and power games) is being dogged with doping controversies - the
real target is to come first whatever be the means! I like the Le-Tour-
Elegance instead - http://www.copenhagencyclechic.com/2009/07/le-tour-de-elegance.html

Why don't you all redirect your negative energy towards pedalling hard or something positive instead. I think it sucks that cycling as a sport is nearly nowhere in this country, but I also think it rocks that we are a major cricket force on the internarional arena. It's awesome that we are one of the best in at least one sport. Cricket is in our blood and culture, like football in Brazil and cycling in Belgium, nothing wrong with that!
What sucks is the lack of support for other sports in India, that is not the fault of the sport (cricket) itself, so stop being haters. It is a fact that there is relatively no interest from the general public (+-) in other sports. The fact that kids off the street can become super stars in India and brazil has to do with the nations belief, interest and passion for a sport. You can't compete with cricket here, cycling can't compete with Football even in France or England, but who cares!
What matters are the efforts happening now at BBC towards promoting a sport without any government support. The last race was even published in the papers. If we keep going like this, it is going to grow and become something where maybe we breed a couple of super stars one day!
So I will see you all on Sunday, hoping to feel that energy going towards your bottom bracket!!!
Pedal hard friends
Vivek

PS: can't wait for the next IPL!!!!!!!!!

Sports owe a hell of a lot to sponsors and media, how would they exist otherwise. What are you talking about???

Things can't happen overnight. If you want people to take cycling as a
serious sport it has to start with people taking cycling seriously in
the first place. We cyclists are doing our bit by creating awareness
and I feel this is a good first step.

A little off topic here: There's a good recent article on
Copenhagenize.com where the author of the blog has written about how
every cyclist is an equal on the road, be a normal 'leisure' cyclist
or a racing champion. Definitely recommended for reading!
