+1 deepak..
I have sincerely tried to use as many stretches of Jayanagar bike lanes as possible during my commutes..
longest is about 100 meters.. !!
on Elephant Rock Road, both sides.
Commonest problems are of course, parked cars, building demolition debris / construction materials/ covered and dug up drainage man holes / tree root unevenness / and most important ,pedestrians- who can't use the foot paths for the same reasons as we can't use the bike lanes !!

Optimists will say.. we have to make a start somewhere..

agreed

Problem will be, when these unusable but token lanes are assigned, we will be expected to remain in them and just as we don't like pedestrians on the road.. other vehicles would arguably object to us using the rest of the road..!! Even legally, a cyclist may lose if not in bike lane and gets knocked or something..

I would actually swim against the tide (of civil society ) and say.. remove  bloody token foot paths also!  Just tar the whole width of the road, one side to other as a single level  .. and let the free for all continue..!!

Police Department has asked for additional 100 men to enforce the NO parking strictly .
This will be done in a phased manner is what the Police told us.
There is a Plan to introduce Public Bicycle Sharing   shortly in Jayanagar.
Requesting all Cyclists to meet the Traffic COmmissioner Saleem and take action.

This is the first step and we all have to start creating awareness about cycling in Jayanagar.
+ Ve things:
All corporates have said that they will get a Bicycle and start riding cycle on the lanes regularly.
Every Month once in a month Bicycle Day will be celebrated
No Parking Boards have been installed.

Dear Chandra,

BBMP will soon install Cycle Way Pointers as this was missed out and idea is to make Public Use a Alternate Road that is free of traffic.
You can see the attached map. The Maps will be installed within the next 15 days.
Police are going to enforce the 'No Parking Zone' slowly,
Thirdly, Jayanagar will be most probably the first city to have Public Bicycle Sharing System in India.
Please join and give us your support.

It will be have been worth the while when, hopefully, motorized vehicles are replaced by bikes.

I have been thinking about this lack of space on our very narrow roads for so many lanes? I thought maybe, the following could be done:

Divide the road into 3 lanes
The central broad one is given over to motorized vehicles.
The lane to side to be the only place on which any parking can be done. This side should also have the unavoidable structures like streetlight poles, signboards, and IF POSSIBLE without cutting the existing trees. Any hawking space should be in this lane. This lane should be at road level.
The third lane on the opposite side should be exclusively reserved for only pedestrians and cyclists. It should be divided into two halves, with the cyclists having the half next to the middle or motor lane. The other half should be reserved for pedestrians. Both pedestrians and cyclists would much rather share their space with each other rather than with buses and vans!  This lane should be at pavement level.
The pavement itself should be totally free of any and all obstructions. It should of one smooth and uniform height and stretch. At the kerb the pavement can be gently sloped all along to meet the road with no kerbstones for separators. With this we can avoid sudden dips and rises as usually is found in front of house gates etc. Seniors, handicapped, children can use this kind of pavement comfortably and safely and will not have to step down and up every few feet. Cyclists will have a level ride.

The edges of the middle lane or motor road can be sloped toward a shallow dip running along the edge of the 'no-kerb' which will channel the rainwater into underground rainwater drains protected by grills which will keep large rubbish from flowing into the drain and clogging it.

Seats can be placed along the outer edge of the pavement against the buildings' walls, if space permits, for those who want to rest awhile.

Congratulations to Murali and his team as well as all others who have worked hard to start this project.. guys like me may crib, but let us all give this initiative the support it deserves..

I was most impressed by two things in this inauguration:

1.  Involvement of children, specifically, their paintings and musings, and the fact that some of them were well rewarded with  bicycles  .. most apt.. well done .. Murali and Sponsors..!!

2.  Mr.Henrick (not sure of spelling).
This young man from Denmark, in Bangalore (for six months), since past month and a half, came on an Atlas..    our classic bike,  dynamo light and all !

As the dy. CM  Mr. Ashok put it .. this vehicle (bicycle )brings you in control of how /when /where you travel..citing the hardships heaped by recent BMTC drivers strike..
Anything which can bring people back to this mode of transport is welcome.. that, in nutshell, was yesterday's function's take home message for me..

Kindly share your experience / observations..!

Great effort Murali, appreciate the initiative!!!!

I was also satisfied because I could also b be part of talk in 3 schools.

True, it was nice morning at jayanagar, happy to meet so many cyclists, whom I know them only through mails.

Yes I too saw Henrick riding Atlas and coming to the venue. I too agree Ashok spoke in true sincerity and made some difference.

Enthu was electrifying. Wish the ride was little longer making it a bit inconvenience to traffic and a bigger visibility for cycling.

Dear All,

Thanks to all the Volunteers especially Shamala, Suma, Anil, Mohan for providing the support -
to get all the schools to participate actively in the various contests that we conducted.

Special thanks to Rohan and the BOTS Team for keeping their shop open for community cycle events. We need such stores in each locality to spread the cycling virus.

Thanks to Iggy of BOTS for openinig the Shop @ 7:30AM everyday for the past one week, so that we can start our work of distributing the competition material to schools.

We also thank the MLA and BBMP for extending all possible to support cycling in Jayanagar.

This is a first step and we will have to travel together to make cycling more popular.

Some of the event Pix can be seen here.

Warm Wishes,

My experiences.

1) The Kesari and Upma were awesome.
2) My chain broke when the rally started, headed to BOTS , borrowed the chain link tool, took out 2 links and shortened the chain.
3) Came back to the venue , the rally had ended. Headed home with Sohan for company. Vedant had got impatient by now.

Overheard that they were going to make the cycling lanes no-parking and no-stopping zones. Do hope they enforce that.
I really do hope that one day, kids can cycle fearlessly on these roads.

You can see the attached map. The Maps will be installed within the next 15 days.
Police are going to enforce the 'No Parking Zone' slowly,
Thirdly, Jayanagar will be most probably the first city to have Public Bicycle Sharing System in India.
Please join and give us your support.

I live in Jayanagar 4th block and deliberately choose to walk wherever I can. The effort to get designated cycling lanes is very appreciable. I too see many problems that could stop these lanes, as thy have been marked now, from becoming a complete success. If that does happen, the hurdles can be noted and changes made for the better.

Everyone will call me a cynic, but this is just more of our money down the drain. Cycle lanes will never work in India, and we have just paid money for this, a large part of which has already been pocketed by politicians I suppose.

We can revisit tis thread in 6 months and see if I was a cynic or realist.

Heck, we can't keep footpaths free for pedestrians.

How is wasting 17 crores better than nothing? These lanes will be unusable. Happened in Poona already.

Better for the guys [politicians, bureaucrats and contractors] who made that money I guess.

You have a valid, very valid point Doc, but  a little optimism is better than nothing.

However , there is one major difference between the Pune lanes and these ones. These are all mostly roads adjacent to residential areas , unlike the Pune ones which are on arterial roads or highways.

There always will be some siphoning but for a change if the money is siphoned in the name of cycling lanes rather than building more roads and flyovers , it does feel a little better

I'll be  the happiest person in the world if I am proved wrong, and this spreads [in a working manner] all thru the city. I sincerely hope so.

Cops don't do anything about driving on the wrong side, cutting red lights etc, how can we expect them to enforce these lanes? In India without enforcement no one will respect the lanes.

If it was not cycling project, politicians would have taken the same money in the name of some other project. :).

So I am happy that part of it was spent towards cycling.

But In my opinion, It would have been better if the lanes had covered some route, like ITPL or electronic city in which ppl commute often.
I hope all the learnings from this project will be incorporated in the next one.

I too agree with Mr. Rao. This is some extra income for our politicians and contractors. If it's 2.5 Cr budget for this project I don't think they have spent atleast 2.5 lacks on this (only lines were drawn with cycle symbols), but it's our turn to utilize it frequently atleast on weekends, a group of cyclists riding along this lane can create awareness on cycling lanes. Better we can plan some time every weekend and can spend it for riding bikes on this lanes as a group....

I tried using the cycle lane a few minutes ago - its a shame that we even call this a cycle lane. There were two wheelers in this lane and *in the wrong direction* !! Vehicles parked, in front of San Jay Gandhi hospital people use this lane as a bus stop.

In front of advaith patrol pump, the cycle lane is used by two wheelers and ricks to cut into the pump in the wrong direction.
Sadly, this project is falling apart before it even takes off.

"Sadly, this project is falling apart before it even takes off."

It is so easy to make a statement like this....

Other day when they inaugurated, they made it very clear, today it is just open, an execution will take minimum of 3 months.

Executions of this project is not easy, I can challenge, people who are part of this group and staying in jayanagar for sure would be parking their vehicles in the lane.

If anything is so easier, why do we have signal lights, camera to record the traffic offense, jails.....on and on....

This is not a unique problem in Bangalore - pretty much the same 'fight' happens across the world

Check out this video of a Mayor running a tank over a car parked in the bicycling lane - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HXE3sAqtdU
Think it was rigged. But it sure is effective.

2 crores or 13 - does not really matter. The money will be used in some way or the other. While 2 crore's sounds like a lot, the numbers that the government works with is quite stupendous!

Bicycle lanes at its worst might cost you a small bit of your hard earned tax money.
At its best it might change the face of Bangalore and in turn India.

So quit arm-chair discussions and bloody start using the lanes (or use a tank if they are occupied, like the video).
No point cribbing about it on forums and further discouraging other folks.

Yes but it is interesting how some people do no better than just discuss and the kind keeps increasing by the day! :) Someone tried got bike lanes made hoping it will increase the biking tribe - I can imagine the effort it must have been working with govt officials and people on the forum are busy doing an autopsy of the whole effort ceaselessly. If you think it was a wasted effort do something which you think is otherwise. If all you can do is talk then god bless the audience! :D

I see you guyz getting more annoyed than I have have ever seen any pedestrian get on the foot path! :D

Pedestrians and bikers co-exist peacefully to the best of my knowledge - it is the people in automobiles that get into tiffs and arguments. If I see my riding on footpath is causing problems to people I will stop doing it! I bike back late from work as it is more pleasant to ride that time on the roads. I will do that more often - simple as that. Let's hope you have better things to do than discuss my choice here...

Now, when I say this people will just say I am venting without 'doing' anything, but the truth is Bang Traffic Police are useless.

Have made at least 5 complaints regarding the random steel barricades put up on OMR, Inner Ring Rd, Bellary Rd etc. These are REALLY dangerous, and BTP instead of doing anything, just come up with crappy 'slogans' on FB. Have seen 2 accidents because of these barricades. No where in the world does anyone put up a steel barricade on fast and slow lanes with no warning whatsoever. On Bellary road they put old tyres. Sheesh, do they have ANY brains at all?

Hi Deepak !

You sound.. really upset!

I think we need to put ourselves in their shoes (Traffic Police-- which, by the way, is not a monolith but conglomerate of " i-am -wiser-than-you-so-what-you-are-the-boss" individuals.. like rest of us!) and see how we can solve the gigantic problem of absolute third rate infrastructure - ( theoretically provided by.. us ! yes, you and me and our elected / selected representatives like corporators, MLAs and MPs ) and ever increasing vehicular and non vehicular traffic of this megacity..

I think they are doing a fairly well.. andmost important .. keeping the city moving..

Steel barricades or any obstruction on the road, not to our liking..  but that is what a road user is supposed to be prepared for.
I remember.. emergency braking without stopping used to be the last hurdle one crossed to pass driving test in the UK..
Think of steel barrier as a dog you want to avoid hitting!!
Police are sharpening your road attention  and emergency braking skills.. !! LOL !

Could be that I am 'really upset' because a friend's son died in one of those accidents, which was completely not necessary. A steel barricade which was completely invisible in the night, and placed in the middle of the road.

I think there was another motorcyclist who died when the car in front of him braked suddenly for the barricade, and the car behind crushed the motor cyclist. This was I think on IRR, though not sure of the location.

Anyway, needless deaths do upset me. Sorry about that.

I've known a bunch of friends who perished after hitting one such barricade. This was a couple of years back, during my B.Tech. Their car hit a barricade on some highway in Hyderabad at night.

It definitely is lethal. They should at least be marked with reflectors, if they cannot be removed.

as heartrending as these incidents are -- i'm sure if me or someone near and dear was involved in an accident involving such barricades etc., i would be flipping -- i feel the unfortunate thing is that probably in most cases, the 'silly' action that the authorities have taken is somehow the least worse amongst a set of bad choices that they are faced with.  most importantly, they have to take some action for some 'fairly immediate' situation on the ground, and have nowhere close to the resources/support needed take proper action.  i think it's due to such circumstances that a lot of their acts just defy reason.

that is not to let them off the hook; they still have to be held accountable.  but if the discussion is around "i don't understand why they take such 'silly' actions?", etc., i feel the above is serious food for thought.  understanding something, is_not the same as condoning it, or accepting it as the be-all-end-all.  and then there are those who will say that that infact is the first step towards taking action to improve things.

re: this bicycle lane initiative -- what i would say --

* if one feels strongly about something and feels compelled to act to affect a change, they should act using their best judgement. and in doing so, they would have done their part.  whether the rest of the system is at a point where those efforts bear the intended fruit, etc., is a separate matter.  i think it takes a special breed to focus on acting on things directly in one's control, w/o thinking too much about rest of the things.  i would commend that quality, where ever i see it.  IMO, this initiative is a good example of that.  well meaning folks are doing what they feel needs to be done, as per their best judgement, and as per what is in their control -- i would commend that.  whether officials are using it as another opportunity to skim off the top, whether public is ready to respect these things, is a separate matter.

* if we are to take say a pool of "people's needs of today", i suppose there is general agreement that there aren't enough resources to address all needs.  relative merits of the needs will be one factor, but won't be the only factor in deciding where the resources are channeled.  those actively making the case to get resources for their needs, can be expected to have much higher chances of getting resources assigned.  again, that is what this initiative does, IMO.  to support it, if we cyclists do group rides (call it show of strength) in various parts of the city, it would be a way to show the officials and public that this is_not some fantasy section of the society for which the lanes have been made.  that, would be doing our part.  again, if/when/how the 'rest of the system' will respond, is_not in our control.  but it would be unfortunate if we keep that from doing our part.
