Anyone loves kids and loves cycling too ?
Looking to do some interesting stuff in this space.

On more concrete terms have a friend who is a teacher and wants to take her kids cycling and wanted some help.

Raise hands, we meet and brainstorm.

Catch em Young :)

That is certainly a good idea. Count me in, we can think of many creative programs and todays kids are more of gadget buddies and less of nature.

My 7 year old son loves cycling and he will be definitely interested ,we can plan some interesting things for the kids. The kiddies race after the BBCH races early this year or late last year was a good initiative, not sure why it wasn't continued

I have spoken about this to an org that works with kids across schools.
I am sure the kids will love it but their parents won't let them ride on
blr roads (I won't be surprised if the same parents favor road widening
- that's a different issue all together! :)).

Rohan - we don't need to _catch_ them young - we need to have them stay
there. Most kids learn to bike but they transition to a scooty or such
very early and their parents take pride in their doing so...

I had my ~4 year old do 2+2 kms o chumundi with his support wheels on. I cannot wait to get rid of those nasty wheels :)

I'm totally interested in exploring this area!

I'll talk to Ishan and see if I can get him to sign up too :)

Great idea, am in too
I've been watching the posts here to see if any solution comes up for the kids seat as I would love to have my 2.5 year old on bike with me on short rides, drop her to school, go to market or just ride for an ice cream. Pls share if there is any suggestion on this front and may have missed the post.

Think the love for cycling has to percolate from parents and they need to feel safe about their kids riding
More when we meet to brainstorm
Cheers

Getting kids excited about riding bicycles over the "other" two-
wheelers is probably a good idea. If you ride a scooter or motor-bike
when you are a teenager, you are unlikely to fall back to the
relatively slow pace of a bicycle.

Also showing kids that today's slick bicycles are cool and will get
you the attention of your peers.

I did take my 14 year old son on a 20 km ride to Yelahanka. But, the
interest fizzled out after one ride.

Maybe if we get some type of competition for different age levels, may
help get kids motivated.

Man, one of the few times when I can gloat about my kids and not feel embarassed about it.
My kids are 8 and 4 and fairly enthusiastic cyclists.

I take my younger one all the time around on my cycle. I haven't had the need to use my car to take him around for a long while now.

For getting rid of training wheels, simply take your kid to an open ground where she/he can afford to fall and not get hurt. It does not take long. My son discarded his training wheel at 3 years and 10 months.  Rao tried this out with his daughter and that worked too , she is about 5.

I am sure they will ride more if they get more company, we can plan longer rides.  I honestly believe the only real way to encourage them is to cycle yourself.  Its easier to preach if you practice, and more importantly, your fears of letting them cycle on the road reduce if you cycle yourself.

There are quite a few kids in my complex who would love to cycle out but their parents won't let them because of the *danger*. Needless to say the parents don't cycle.

I will be more than happy to help parents who wish to get their kids  on a bike. (ie of course if you feel I can be of any help). Really thrilled to see interest picking up in getting kids to cycle.

This is a good initiative and pls count me and my son in...

I have a 7 yr son and he has a BSA Champ. Every Saturday, we both go
to the nearby railway track (Ecity Phase 1, Huskur Gate Road towards
Chandapura) and watch the 7:00 pm Salem express pass by. Its a 2 km
ride and we both seems to enjoy this...

the layout where we stay.

Count me in, for anything to do with kids cycling, in fact I could volunteer to execute ideas folks throw in.

Both my sons used to use training wheels till this Dusheera.

I got my elder son who is 5 years old ride the cycle in a matter of 5 days, though it took a lot of running next to him.

It got me thinking that I let him ride with those training wheels for a whole 2 years. If just I had taken the initiative a little earlier.

My younger one who is 3.5 is also able to balance now, but needs to learn to start and stop on his own.

What about a kids cycling meet up and exchanging notes in GKVK on the weekend?

Dear Rohan / all,

Sharing an idea....

Would you guys & kids be interested to come to Electronic City along
with Kids? I will try and arrange a cycling tour (max 3 kms) from my
house to the nearby railway track? Its a very safe road passing by the
rose and tomato fields and greenery every where (near to the Ebenezer
International School). I can check with the guard on duty on the time
of the train and kids will enjoy the railway crossing with the gates
going down and how the guard puts up the green flag to the passing
train......

You might have to put the cycles in a car or something to reach here
as the distance is far for most of us. I will arrange for light
breakfast/snacks for all of us....Do let me know if this sounds
interesting...

Yesterday I met a fat family eating out in a darshini. Myself n uday my fellow rider stopped for a coffee. I saw them n told d kid who is around 10yrs (fat guy) I told his dad to put him on to cycling asap so that he doesn't end up being obese for the rest of his life.
I told them abt bots s coming up wid this cool idea.
Dad n mom started telling me bangalore traffic s so heavy n they don't want to risk their sons life itseems. As if we r going to a war everyday.lol. Can't believe this guys. I even told them to send him to open ground to cycle. But still they feel its dangerous.
I shut my mouth n came back didn't know how to convince them. Any suggestions to move some fat asses like these. ?

Pradeep,

that is such a breach into personal lives.....you might think you are doing a good thing but you have no right to interfere with their lives.
Imagine an investment banker or a rocket scientist lecturing you on how intellectually inferior job you are stuck in ( assuming you are one of those IT folks in blr) and how much harm your are doing to the coming generations by limiting your brain's capabilities.

it is good to encourage people to get into healthy life styles but there are better ways of doing things. What if the fat family is fat for a genetic reason or for health reasons ( hyperthyroidism etc).

No offense to you, but it is very very disappointing to see people turn "fundamentalist" even for a good cause.

Honestly there is nothing wrong in you approaching the topic. As long as you realize you have to back off at some point. There is a big section of populace out there that still thinks you are from another planet when you talk about cycling , even more so if you talk about children cycling. I might be stereotyping those folks but chances are the parents probably don't move an inch more than they have too.And if the parents themselves are obese or sedentary, very unlikely that they would be very gung-ho about letting their kids get on the saddle.

I have close relatives who still don't get it and keep asking me why  I cycle when I can afford a car. It will take a lot of time, patience and sustained effort to attain a critical mass of people who think that cycling is not a specialized sport but very much a regular commute vehicle for everybody. We need to reclaim space for ourselves but it is not easy. Definitely if you cycle it is easier for your kids to consider it as a normal activity, a fun activity.

The mentality that why should my son cylcle when I can afford an SUV will take time to change.  Till that time we need more people who continously engage people  , trying to get more people on the saddle.

Hey, there are later updates in the thread.

1) For now, a few of us have accepted Hari's offer of doing a 'Watch the train ride' near his place near Electronics city with the kids.Hopefully we can co-ordinate tiny tots for 2-3 kms.

2) Jaikant wants to do something similar in GKVK, around where he lives.

3)Now my idea. Deepa showed me this wonderful place almost next door where there is Reserved forest area between JP Nagar and Arekere. This place is closed to vehicles. There is one long tarred rode , one metal road and lots of trails in the area. I think this is an amazing place for kids ( esp the no vehicle part and a large available area -  I am told the entire wooded area is 30 acres. This is one place where can easily take tiny tots , they would love riding in the greenery. We could organize some event here, maybe even a race.

Brilliant. With Oct BBCh over, can look at this again.

So apart from what Chiddu recommended, we also have Abhi who is willing to look at some kids riding around Sarjapura - near Decathlon.

Do we have a concrete show of hands for each location below? Would be good to have about 3 bikers per place atleast. That way we have redundancy and its more fun.

GKVK - Jaikant
Mini Forest JP Nagar - Deepa
Electronics City - Hari/Chidu
Sarjapura - Abhinandan

Am guessing for starters just deciding on a date for an area and then meeting up with kids and riding with them would be good fun before we do this on a more regular basis where we can start moulding these kids into some kickass bikers who will whoop our butts at
the BBCh races ;)

We can all swap notes after the rides and see how it went and how we can make it better for the kids.

Mahesh,

Karthick has nearly done up with a questionnaire around this! Once this is rolled out we could get data on the dates!

Perhaps we should give it one more day, since I changed the form today morning.

It will be good if Jaikanth/Deepa/Hari/Chidu/Abhinandan confirm if the
format is fine.

I have kept only two age groups based on Jai's suggestion: 3-5 and
5-7. Should we have a 7-12 and 12+ groups as well?

Cheers,
Karthick

Looks good to me.  12+ guys would already be cycling on the road, is my feeling. Parents of kids in that age group can possibly answer that question

It would be wholesome to have the mommies and daddies in the fray too!

Hi Ashish,

I posted the same question on this forum a few days back (for my son, 4.5 yrs old). One solution was to just have a front seat fitted. Chidambaran Subramanian was kind enough to take some good pics of what he has done. I'll forward this mail to you separately. 2 years.. that is a little too young, but you can explore the same option.

Cheers,
Karthick

Hi Deepa,

I think you are already the volunteer for the "mini forest - JP Nagar"
area :) Atleast, that is what I gathered from Rohan's email in this
same thread. Did you get a chance to look at the form I did? Could be
helpful in converging on a date.

Should we open up the form for submits?

Cheers,
Karthick

Hi HVK,

Just to be sure, are you trying to open:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dGVLLUc0YktPdkQxYVpQWTdON2tIMXc6MQ

I can't mail you the form - it is online.

All, I guess the format is fine. Can we start submissions? :) I have
added my entry.

Thanks Chidu for the update. The Reserved forest area sounds great.
Rohan sounds good.

Was out of town and the thread has grown.... So do we have dates for
the areas?

I can volunteer for JP Nagar, Deepa let me know when. Will get Maya
with me.

Hi Satheesh,

Please see the help text for two questions: they read: "If you need to fill for say, only one kid, please select 'NA' for other rows. The submit won't work otherwise." :)

I haven't seen any info on Sarjapur meet? Abhinandan? Or someone else?
