Hey guys, I just cleaned my bike of all the dirt and grease with wd40 spray.

Do I need to oil the chain and other parts or is WD40 a lubricant itself?

Oops. This guy suggests that WD40 is bad for chain:

He says

"Bicycle chains, on the other hand, are far too heavy and fast-moving for the lubricating power of WD-40 to have any effect at all. As a matter of fact, WD-40 will actually strip away any existing lubricant and leave your drivetrain dry - metal on metal. Basically, spraying this stuff on your chain is worse than using no lubricant at all!"

So he's saying that we shouldn't use WD40 for lubricating.

I guess it should be ok if we use WD40 for cleaning, degreasing. And then use some machine oil as lubricant after it dries off.

My mechanic suggested me to use 2T oil for cycle chains. Is it ok?

Thanks

hey..
sewing machine oil [SINGER(other brands are slightly thick again)
costs abt 20 rupees] my fren...
2t oil is way too thick density wise and will naturally attract more
dirt n dust and its tough to clean/degrease
otherwise there are other options like GT85(cleaner&lube) which would
cost abt 500rupees a can
wht i would suggest is sewing machine oil n clean the bike(chain/
cassette/movin parts) atleast once a week!!!
ridesafe!!

Yup. Solid advice from Srini.

Stay away from 2T.
Its much thicker and not meant for bicycles. Definite recipe for a lot of much in a very short time.

check out the 'before' pictures - I was experimenting with out one of those expensive lubricants available in the market (costed me 500 bucks. Had teflon written all over it )
Took me a lot of time to get that muck off the drive train !

use WD40 to de grease the chain (only if there is a lot of muck on it, else not required) and then use a thin lubricating agent to lube the chain.

Does anyone know of a shop in HSR/Koramangala that sells WD40? I've
tried quite a few hardware stores without success.

If WD40 is not available, you can ask for "Zorrick" its a product from
the makers of Fevicol and works the same as WD40. Also its a bit
cheaper.

Hi Jagan,

You can get WD40 at the Aishwarya Departmental store in Koramangala. The store is located where the 80ft road (one that is in front of Sony World, Koramangala) meets the Sarjapura Road in a T intersection. This store is right at that corner.

They do have WD40.

Thanks,
-Vasu
