Dogs are big problem when you are passing through a remote area or @ night.

The best strategy is to not to make eye to eye contact and ride at a decent pace. If you ride fast then you are in trouble.

Still if a dog is trying to bite you are chasing just stop and give him a mock charge. Don't practice this when there is a group of dogs.

Hope this will help.

I've faced a lot of dog chasings, while runnin and cycling. Every time, all i do is slow down a bit, just make the petting sounds of how u would treat a friendly dog. And it ususally gets confused and leaves me alone after a bit of barking.

I too find that pedalling as if nothing is wrong, and not making eye contact, works. That said, I must say that it was not a stray dog, but one that came out of someone's garden, that came up and bit me on the ankle as I was cycling. The anti-rabies injections are expensive!

I haven't encountered this on main roads. I've been cycling here for a long time now. On occasion I have been barked at and chased, typically on residential areas,  I simply stop the bike and stay. The dog will just move off disinterested

Then there is always the "Stanzin method" for those with fairly large balls:
Drop your bike, and charge full throttle at the dogs, full eye contact, teeth exposed and snarling ferociously like a mad rabid animal!!
The effect of this was, our four legged friends chucking a hectic slippery u-turn, tucking their tail nice and tight between there legs, and scrambling away madly like they saw a ghost. Funnily, it had the same effect on me, I pulled a Cavendish and scrammed! I didn't know Stanzin had that psycho demon within, it was well impressive.
Oddly, aggressive monkeys have a similar effect on Georg. You have to be careful with these gentle looking fellows!!!

I don't think there is any trick, just use your common sense depending
upon the situation.

I have faced a situation where a lone aggressive dog tried charging on
me..
I slowed down , got off my bike. The dog also slowed down his
charge..
I used my bike as a barricade between him and me ... and pretended
picking up a stone , and it worked, he drew back .
But the moment i turned my bike he started barking an growling from
behind and got ready to charge again...
So i had to face him and use my bike as a barricade and walk a little
further away and then wizz off as fast as possible ...
Oh don't forget to show your middle finger when you do this .. it
works :)

Hi,

I'd call it stanzin's situation not method. A gang of our four legged friends had declared ambush war and charged at us clearly targeting at our shining calf muscle. The gang was so close to us that there were two possibilities attack or get attacked. The choice was obvious......

so, if four legged friends are (wants to get) too close, do IGNORE them, move bit closer to them and express our true feeling of the moment !

big typo mistake!

Don't IGNORE them, give complete attention, move bit closer to them and express our true feeling of the moment !

Hey dogs can't see the rotating wheel or paddle, they develop a state in there mind which is uncontrollable by them, like madness, they star chasing it, once you stop the rotation it just cam down...
so when a dog is chasing you stop peddling and break..
and never try to kick them or swing your arms against them , they think it as a treat and try to catch with   a bite......
that's the best solution for a dog chaseeee

Warm Regards
Jaison

WOW! I really enjoyed reading this thread! Lot of strategies! I liked
Sandeep's idea of pelting biscuits!! ;-) and Sudhir's idea of making
"smooching" sounds (I do that too and also try talking them out of
it.....still riding with my feet off the pedals ...high up in the air
while they are snapping close to the pedal) !
Yes, many of you are well versed with dog psychology!

I had this experience many times particularly when i go to room on
cycle in late nights(beyond 12am)out side my institute campus dogs
will compete with me for riding. I use to keep my legs on handle bar
and use to ride( road from my office to room its slightly decending so
cycle goes on its own with out pedaling)
when ever they chase me my heart beat rises drastically. now I learned
lesson from them if i see any dog(s) or hear any barking sound just
getdown and walk till passing those dogs by using cycle as shield. I
experinced this. if i walk they dont even bark. but if i ride cycle in
front of them in the night they chase as long as you go on cycle.

I have had the occasional "confrontation" esp when getting back late at night. Theres a bunch of 3-4 around here.

The first time - I got off the bike and spoke firmly, loudly and of course, kept the cycle between myself and them :)

More recently, have started speaking to them audibly during the day so I'm a familiar guy when I talk to them later at night!

Rgds,
Sameer

Murali...*loved* this suggestion! :)

I must say, BBC threads are so much fun, that I would buy a cycle just to get on to the egroup!

They usually dont know what to do if the thing they are chasing stops.
