Hi

We are presenting a 150 km populaire on this Saturday, 12th November
2011. This is also the launch ride of the brevets starting from 26th
November. The details of the ride are available here:
http://sites.google.com/site/iiscrando/2011-season/nov-2011-arkavathi-150-populaire

The route passes through Kanakpura, Ramanagara and Manchanbele
reservoir following the river Arkavathi upstream. Most of the route is
scenic and quiet.

It involves a good amount of climbing, and will serve as a good
preparatory ride for the brevets. The 200 km brevet shares part of the
route with this ride. So it will help to familiarize with the route.

Any rider can participate in this ride after registering. Online
registration for the ride is free.

Regards
Mustafa

Yay! I registered. I have a few questions....

1. Do we get a certificate and/or medal for this?
2. Can you give me an online map if its not too much trouble?
3. Any info on the kind of shops and hotels available enroute?

Thanks,
Shankar

At couple of points in the cue sheet it is mentioned "bad roads". Are these bad roads good enough for me to take my sport one with stock tires?

I managed to handle these with 23 mm tyres. You may need to pass slowly and carefully over these sections.

There are two stretches, about 20 km each, where there are no shops -
one between Kanakpura and Ramanagara, and the other between Ramnagara
and Manchanbele. Rest of the route is very active with plenty of shops
and eateries.

My personal opinion is that this is a nice introduction to
randonneuring and brevets, but not to long distance cycling. You
should have some experience riding long distances over challenging
terrain.

I personally feel it will be a good try to win over, "mind over body".

There will be so much positive rub off it is worth giving it a try, it will be extremely difficult get to meet so many wonderful cyclist on a given day.

It doesn't matter it's all in the mind first.
What's the worst that can happen? You'll be lost among some beautiful
scenery a few tens of km from bangalore...that's all
:)
Try it if you want to. It's only in the mind (at first).

I think, its not just the distance. The terrain is quite rolling with lot of cumulative elevation gain if I remember correctly. So, adding that to the distance is going to be a good challenge for most experienced riders too. :D

Nothing special for this populaire. just the usual : water, small change of money for food, rainwear(if you dont enjoy getting wet), helmet. This is also given in the website

Map -> it is there in the link (one Mustafa posted)
GPX -> it is there as an attachement to the page . This is a GPS log. You can use it to do your own route analysis (forget it if you are not familiar with it)
Cue sheet -> it is a text format guide that helps you navigate. This is also present in the link.

    thanks in advance ;)

A map is a thing which shows you how to go about somewhere.
It's a picture.
If you are right brained, this will be good for you.

If you are left brained, you can see the cue sheet.
The cue sheet is so boring because it has no pictures at all. But some
people actually read it (!!) before riding.

This is all theory. In practice what happens is that, usually there is
a big group of cyclists at the start and people just follow someone
else (the few unfortunate ones who happen to be well versed with the
cue sheet and have mugged it up and can tell you what line comes after
what even when their glucose is running out and they are pedaling in
anaerobic conditions) like sheep, and by the theory of the psychology
of group dynamics, a large percentage of people end up successfully
completing a populaire or brevet.

The percentage of people successfully completing the ride is often
proudly advertised. Since this is all so random, there will usually be
a group of people who do not follow the right sheep leaders...
according to the theorem of randomness.
These end up as DNF or Did Not Finish. And this is also proudly
advertised after the ride on the website.

(on a serious note: this route will be nice and scenic (albeit a
little climby), so have a nice ride folks.
Anyway, happy riding have fun!! :D )

Hi Gokul,

Thanks, your words are really encouraging.. got inspired and
registered myself, now i dont mind getting lost in the beautiful
scenery... :)

however, just wondering .. since i leave in Banglaore south
(Gottigere), from my point to start and finish points are approx 24
kms each side... which will make the trip to 200 K, can i join the
ride in between and get off in between as well... i.e can i join the
ride in 'Raghuvanhalli on NH9 and off at Sunkadakatte ?? (for me that
will be 150+ kms), is that possible / allowed ??

Not following the 'official' route?
You will then not be officially doing the populaire, but if your
intention is to have fun with a fun loving group of cyclists, no one
is going to bring in the army to keep you away, you're more than
welcome :)
Please join in and have fun

After all that is the purpose of a populaire i guess ... to make
cycling popular...

Not really. The route is fixed by the organizers.

Obviously you can join anywhere, but it will be an unofficial ride.

Gentle reminder, registrations close automatically today evening at 6PM.

If you want to ride and your name is not in this list:
<http://rrbmgr.appspot.com/iiscrando/nov2011/registrations>, then you
must register.

<http://rrbmgr.appspot.com/iiscrando/nov2011/register/>

Even if you are rider who has ridden a previous populaire, you need to
register again for this populaire.

I find it anomalous that there are so many O+ people (and so many Rh+ people) on that list.

You're not the first -- it was pointed out earlier too, but it's
easily explained:

O+ is the most common blood group.
