Hello folks,

One of my friends is looking to buy a cycle for casual riding. He is quite fit: a regular runner - 10k daily, plus gym.

His budget for the cycle is 10k.. I thought RR 5.0 would be a good choice, but I do not see that anymore on the Decathlon website..

The options seem to be: un-geared "my bike", 7-geared "my bike" and VTT Rockrider 300.

My bike 7s (http://www.decathlon.in/cycling/cycles/mountain-bikes/my-bike---7s/p-M8273887) seems to have replaced RR 5.0. Anyone here has bought and used this cycle? Any pros/cons? I remember some comments here that the tyres that came with "my bike" (the un-geared version) wears out fast.

How does "My bike 7s" compare with the more expensive VTT RR 300 (http://www.decathlon.in/cycling/cycles/mountain-bikes/vtt-rockrider-300-men/p-M8284495) ?

I think 7 gears should be sufficient for most city rides.. I don't think he plans to use this extensively for climbing... so more gears wouldn't necessarily be a plus with VTT RR 300. At the same time, having a geared bike will help tide the flyovers in the city...so I'm planning to suggest "my bike 7s", with a possible tyre upgrade - your comments would be helpful!

Thanks,
Karthick

Regarding the tire upgrade, does Decathlon allow for straight swap with difference amount? If not, would it not be better to use the tires as long as they last and then switch to better tires later?

Yes, My Bike 7s is a very good bike for city rides. I have been using it for the last 2 months and am very pleased with its performance. It is a very good option at this price range. But you may feel the need for some more gears in some steep climbs. I guess you shouldn't have any problem with riding 60-80 kms, but may not be suitable for 100 km rides. If your plan is to use it for commute, then you won't get a better option at this price range.

Best regards,
Harish.

Harish, thanks!

Prashanth: Valid point - I don't think Decathlon allows me to swap the tyres while purchasing.

If they are the same ralson tyres that were offered with the mybike, it would be better to swap them at the beginning itself. Those ralson tyres are crazy heavy and imho the bike is worthy of much better tyres. BOTS has some schwalbe tyres on sale at 800 each, seems cheap enough for an immediate upgrade. Those tubes which came inside the ralson tyres were crazy heavy too.
