Do either GoAir or Jet Airways have any convenient options to take a bike along in check-in?

Kindly let know if anybody has any experience. I remember spice jet would take the bike as is without needing to box it.

Jetairways allows bike bags for free (no excess baggage /oversize fee, if item is checked as your one free check in item, and it doesn't exceed weight). However, I don't believe they or any other airline would allow unboxed/unbagged bikes.
Air Asia lists the following quite clearly on their website: http://www.airasia.com/ask/template.do?id=45
Since bicycles have to be checked in, your bicycle:
  1. Must be properly packed in recognised bicycle bag or in a protective box or bag or in plastic wrap. Otherwise, we will refuse carriage.
  2. Should be of the general and standard dimensions
  3. Must adhere to the handling procedure stated below.

HANDLING PROCEDURE OF BICYCLES FOR TRAVEL

One bicycle is accepted as one sport equipment in the following manner:
  1. Handle Bars: The handle bars must be turned in so that they are in alignment with the frame
  2. Pedals: The pedal should either be removed or checked-in this to prevent them causing damage to other bicycles or checked baggage
  3. Gears: The gears should be wrapped to protect them from damage
  4. Tyres: Must be deflated
  5. Mudguards: These can either be removed or again should be protected from damage
  6. Loose items: Any loose items e.g. pump, lights, water bottle and etc. must be securely fastened to the bicycle or removed and checked-in.

Thanks guys. That was pretty helpful. It is Air Asia for now. Let me figure if I can take a bike along. Will share my experience if I do.

Thanks,

Hi Mayank,

I carried my bike in Air Asia in June. You can also pre-book your bike as sports luggage. The bike can be either boxed or bubble wrapped. I did the latter. No issues at all.

Did the weight become a problem. Most bikes are around 13-14 kilos. Do they fuss about how much weight the bike is?

Air Asia has different pricing for different weights. I think I booked the 20kg one for 899 and for 15kg, it was 799. Their website will provide the options, while booking the ticket.

However,  Air India is the best. There is no fee for oversized baggage and they  let me carry my overweight bag as cabin luggage:-)

For Air Asia..as per new policy now You need to pre book your baggage,  with flight itself, including sports equipment. The baggage fee structure is different for on the counter check in.

Hi Gopi, thanks for the info...
If a new bike, unassembled-box piece, bought on an international flight, whether we would face any problem in the customs at Bangalore airport!!

With new bikes, if the box has stickers with the price, original bill etc, you could land in trouble if you don't declare it through customs. However, if there's no overt stickering, you might be able to get away with calling it a used bike.  A friend bought a bike in the US, used it for a couple of days, packed all the invoices and price tags separately and got the bike through EU customs without having to pay import duty. With Indian customs, YMMV.
