Friends,

I'm considering buying a spare set of MTB wheels/tires for my ACT 110
bike - to swap for trail rides. Had a few questions about them:

1) Has anyone tried this? Is it possible to fix an MTB tyre on to this
model? (Planning to check with the dealer later today)
2) How easy or difficult is it to swap them? I have a clip on tyre
only in the front.
3) I don't have shock abs on the bike so will that be a problem?
4) Any recommended wheels/tyres?
5) Any other modifications that would be required to adjust for them?
6) Any other potential issues with this arrangement?

Warm regards,
Sudarshan

ACT 110 is a hybrid right?

If so, the tyre alone cant be changed (MTB tyres are 26", hybrids and roadbikes ar 27")..... U'll need to change the wheels as well. And that can be more tricky than popping the quick release and putting another wheel, cos the rear sprockets will have to be removed and put in as well....

And i have no idea if the fork and seat stays of the ACT have enough clearance for an MTB tyre. The brakes would be at the wrong spot too.... but i guess, that can be tweaked around a bit.... anyway, all this seems too much work to keep happily swapping between MTB mode and hybrid mode

Thanks, Sud. Yes, ACT 110 is a hybrid. I was looking at getting a
spare set of wheels too maybe with an extra set of sprockets. I'm
weighing this option against buying another bike so I'm willing to
swap for trail rides once in a while, if possible. For my daily
commute to office, the hybrids are great. But if the wheel sizes are
different, I doubt if this would be possible.

I doubt you will be able to change the size of the wheel from 26 to 27 inches or vice versa.

Whatever the existing brakes calipers, they would not work on the new sized rim. Also when going from 26 to 27 the fork, chain and seat stay might be too short.

Hi George, Tarun,

Spoke to the dealer yesterday and he said that its not possible -
primarily due to the different wheel sizes :(, as Sud had rightly
pointed out.

I think I should first try this tyre on a trail. The treads look like
they may hold reasonably well on trails.

So changing tyre sizes is ruled out. But I'm still trying to see if I
can find a solution. There must be tyres available in this size with
treads suitable for trail rides. Found a site
http://www.bicycletires.com/a_27/tire_size/article.htm that talks
about these. Still need to see and compare it with the tyre I have and
see if there are any options available. Will keep you posted.
