Hi all,

I am hoping to run barefoot in future and I attempted the Mumbai Marathon (half) last year with Jawpers from Addidas (slip ons with very minimal sole). I have used the pair for cycling, treking and all else (even a limited rock climbing training! :)) - the water seeps through and they dry real quick. I am hoping to take a pair more suitable for running and use it for other purposes like cycling and such as well. I saw this pair at Addidas -

looks similar to Vibram for 5 grand. I want to know availability of Vibram and other such players? Is Addidas any good?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Mayank,

I think Sport XS is stokcing some of these type of shoes. Haven't been
able to go and check them out. They are located in Mantri Mall, Forum
Mall and Forum Value Mall.

Shashi

Hi,
Just a question. Are these tailor made for running. I have been into running for a long time and of late have been experiencing bad pain in my shins.
I think it could be because of the shoes. At present i wear a reebok which i think is for the purpose of running . Do these shoes help in any way? Also are they available in all adidas outlets?
Thanks
Abhishek

Have you tried barefoot running before? Please don't try a marathon as your first experience.

I brought a minimal running shoe by Nike (Free 5.0) & it had an actual warning note telling the customer to ease into wearing them. I wore them to work the next day for 8-9 hours of walking to meetings, a quarter km or so between the hardware lab & my cube. I did that about 5 or 6 times. When I came home my bones or muscles in my foot hurt so much plus my calves were killing me I ended up taking extra strength tynelol that night.

Most people use barefoot style shoes for trying 5-10 miles or so for strengtheming the muscles of your feet but I do know elite african marathoners run truly barefoot. BUT they are some of the best in the world not mention Africans. :)

Good luck,

George Joseph

Btw: shin splints are usually caused by increasing your mileage too quickly and/or a tight calf muscles. I would think barefoot styles shoes would help long term but not immediately.

Hi,

The running dynamics change when running barefeet. With shoes people
mostly tend to hit the ground with their heels (which isnt good
apparently). With barefeet running you tend to use more of the curved part
of the foot. Hence, it is usually recommended that you start running again
from scratch (very small distances to begin with). I tried it for 3km runs
and my shins were really sore.

BTW the best barefoot marathon running time is by an Indian.

Thanks and Regards,
Apurv Manjrekar

One of the regular writers on this forum,Anil Kadsur, is a barefoot marathoner. I've switched to barefoot, but I run maybe 10-40km a month. I feel more injury free now, but I feel it is too early to make a judgement.

Not sure if that was addressed to me but I did 10 km sunfeast runs without training. For Mumbai Marathon I was not training regularly but I did run two rounds of Agara lake and sometimes the lake at Lalbagh all in those minimal shoes. It used to hurt but I assumed my feet will get used to it and it did but not my knees. My knees were not able to sustain for half a marathon may be due to lack of training. If you run barefoot you need to ensue you run as much on your paws as possible getting natural shock absorbption. This time I am hoping to train better. Just wanting to ensure I don't injure myself and not be able to run at all like some friends have! :)

Same idea... Different brand.  All the running brands have it. Minimal sole, lower or no difference in height between forefoot and heel.

I used to run with a typical rebook running shoes ( high heel and cushioning and so heel strike ).
Being a careless runner, i used to trip on stones and get my ankle twisted now and then. I started running barefoot to land softly and avoid heel strike.
But slow transition didn't happen and i don't think running barefoot on our streets is a good idea.
People spit and then there are sharp objects. I tried ( yes i ran inside the shop ) and brought this - http://www.vivobarefoot.com/uk/mens/ultra-mens-6.html
and since then i am using this for my regular runs and marathon runs. Not only I feel better i am running better too.
I got them from the sports XS shop @ whitefield forum value mail.

I'm 2 months new to running a I was new to cycling 7 months ago. I trained for ultra and completed 12.5k with around a month of training - mostly on Nikes but last week and a half just bare foot(no minimalist for me only the real one). Once I ran barefoot, I could not go back to shoe anymore! I completed the recent ultra 12.5 in 1hr22min with a knee pain. I suspect i did too much in lesser period! The pain stayed with me on my 200brevet and krishnegiri trips. I avoided running and bike for nearly 2 weeks and the pain appears to have disappeared completely. This recent weekend I completed WE3 CAM ride successfully which is a testimony.

I'm ready to run bare again now but shall take it really really slowly now :)

I tried barefoot on treadmill, ran too much on my first attempt. Got a
metatarsal fracture. I am now easing into it slowly.
Surface too makes a lot of difference IMO. Don't try running on
tarmac, grass or dirt would be better options in the beginning.

I think treadmill is a strict no for barefoot! You will end up with boils.

It all depends on conditioning man.Varies from person to person.I've
never had calluses, but do get cracked all over my feet, I tend to use
socks to combat that.
There have been people who have switched to barefoot style shoes and
benefited, some have started barefoot, and some are still comfortable
with shoes.

How long did it take you to wash the treadmill off your feet. The treadmill rubber starts burning after sometime. :P

I switched to minimalist/barefoot shoes from padded shoes around a year back.

For running:VFF Bikila

Casual:Bata Canvas,Newfeel(the Rs.600 shoe).

(Also made a pair of huaraches, but used bicycle inner tube for sole.If anyone knows where i can get around a 4mm thick sole material please let me know.)

Cheers.

108,

I am not in the business of Enlightening people, for that you need to contact some one else!!!!

I have done it I know the result, I already wrote that.

Tell me, if I have to go by your logic.....

"How long did it take you to wash the treadmill off your feet. The treadmill rubber starts burning after sometime. :P"

Rubber should start burning even when you run with shoes.......or is that Treadmill is allergic to some one running barefoot!!!!

+1

BTW I was wearing my rock climbing shoes, which are as good as
barefoot. So no treadmill on my feet.
