Hi All

I have a doubt pls clarify.
Most of us have grown up hearing our elders saying "do not drink water
soon after playing" (outdoor games). So is it ok to take bath soon
after cycling?
I know there are lot of science students in this forum. And i am a
commerce student so i have very little knowledge about this :)

Every sports coach or athlete I've come across have confirmed / supported the theory of proper warm-up and cool-down. Taking a shower immediately after cycling, I believe qualifies as a case very bad cool-down. Only swimmers take a shower immediately after they are out of their sporting/activity cycle.

By cool down I always thought it was about getting the heart rate to normal levels.
As a runner, I feel a cold shower helps in recovery for the sore muscles

+1

To really speed recovery after a long run or ride try soaking your legs in an ice bath.

I think the question is about a cold bath _immediately_ after work out. I don't usually worry about these things. I would go cool myself down under glacial ice cold water on our ride from Manali to Leh - absolutely loved it! :))

But this might not be good for the body - sudden cooling down like Banibrata mentioned. I haven't seen any visible issues and find it soothing for the muscles and very refreshing. Would be good to know if there are any obvious problems with it. I think people tend to fall sick if they have cold water over their head but not sure it has anything to about body cooling down after work out.

Drinking water is not advised after a warm up as it kills the very idea of doing the warm by cooling the body down.

Not sure about that.

Many professional bike teams warm up with an ice vest to keep the cylists' core temp down while the legs get warmed up..

Our elders also told us not to drink any water 'during' any sport
either! And all of us who've cycled long enough know how that turns
out. And same applies to immediately after the workout. So, i
generally take any folklore wisdom only after evaluating it myself.

On the topic of a bath immediately after a workout.... the only thing
that i find more relaxing is to head to the swimming pool and float
around in the water. I dunno if that affects rate of recovery in any
way. But it has never come in my way

Thanks one & all the the response. It was indeed very nice of you
people
sharing your experience.
All these days i was under the impression that sudden cooling down is
bad to your heart.
But i have a very different response here

Thanks

Just keep riding, riding , riding and riding. You'll figure out what
works for you, and then realize why 10 people in this forum give you
10 conflicting points of view

"Usha: IMO, I don't know what's correct. But try it out, it might work for you  like it does for me !"

Well said, and do try and test it out guys, we all do not have data to bank upon which relates to different body type, methods, conditions etc.

Generally, heard many taking precaution of taking water in room tempreture just immidaitaly coming out from a hot sunny tempreature. The assumption is body and water tempreature is different and hence this might be the cause for catching this fever and cold, dont know the real reason for sure though.

At the moment couldnt find any supporting files/links to back up the myth ( subjective) :(

Taking a "cold" Bath (Not LUKEWARM WATER bath) helps Muscles right
after intense activity.
This was quoted by "Dr. Dhanajeyan" (Spectrum physio)
he said, many micro muscle tear happens during intense activity and
taking Ice cold bath will helps muscle re-construction.
Atleast we can trust this, since it was told by a sport physio.

don't get confused guys, there are two topics here, one is internal and another is external.

Internal body ( water into stomach ): meaning Drinking water after a workout physical activity

After a workout in hot sunny day: VS drinking a cold water
After a workout in cold rainy day:  VS taking a Luke warm / room temperature water

External body ( water outside the body ) : meaning Taking bath after a workout or physical activity

After a workout in hot sunny day: VS taking a cold water shower
After a workout in cold rainy day: VS taking a Luke warm / room temperature water shower

It all depends on with what body type, conditions, etc etc. One solution might work for one and the same might not for other,
do you get the points  what i am getting at ? In this case, every action has equal and opposite reaction. So the basic assumptions are
these fever and cold is caused due to messing up with the two different temperatures ( body and water ) as per old indian beliefs (myth)
( needs more research and evidence )

As far as I heard from the folklore wisdom is that drinking water during the hard physical work is fine. But not after it. Always found it fine when drinking water when I am still playing/ walking in the sun.

my 2 cents

I am aware that I am digging half a decade old thread but here is my ideology, I do keep the last three kms pace very mild to cool down. Then space ten minutes to have luke warm water shower to fight against the cold weather, however will end by cold water as the skin pores opened by warm water needs to be closed before I expose myself to the dirt.

Shower as you (and others around you) feel comfortable? No sense in digging too deep scientifically unless you are a model whose blackheads can be seen in head shots.
