Hi,

Is it legal to carry a mountain bike on a motorbike?
If yes, any place you guys can recommend to get a custom rack done or any other alternatives?

I usually go to thurahalli over the weekend and it's not that far but I just hate riding a full suspension bike on the road.
I also plan to do some coorg and kerala trips and really want to carry the bike along.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,
Ashish

I don't think you'll find a rule explicitly banning/prohibiting carrying a bicycle on a motorcycle, but that's simply because it's not deemed something people might even think of doing. Note that this may not stop police people from stopping you, either because they are genuinely concerned about the safety aspect (they should be) or because they want a bribe.  Please don't do it, irrespective of the legal status as it's not just a matter of your own safety; you may very well be exposing other innocent people to dangers as the result of attempting something like this on highways.

Well,
As far as I've checked people have been doing this already. Probably not here and I don't see a safety issue.
It is same as mounting your bikes on a car. Safety is involved there as well Ain't it?

Anyways here are few links for your reference:

No, it's NOT the same as mounting bikes on a car.  A car has a defined length and breadth; mounting a bike on either a roof mount or on the rear mount does not cause the length or breadth of the car to change.  Mounting it on a motorbike is simply not the same thing. There are
People do crazy and ridiculous things all the time; doesn't mean it's the right thing to do. See attached picture, for your reference.  My two paise.

what's right for one person is not necessarily right for everyone. What's crazy for one person may be perfectly normal for another.
As long as it is not illegal, go ahead and  pursue your interests. You may be the next trend setter, who knows.

I know people abroad who are as passionate about their motorized bike as they are for their non motorized one.

Road safety is important, and hence should be done responsibly.

I'm very sure it's not illegal (not mentioned in any rule book) to transport cows on a motorcycle.  Trend setting is all fine, as long as you don't endanger other innocent people's lives. Some person may have a passion to build a cow mounting rack for a motorbike, but is that potentially dangerous for other road users? Yes. Should he go ahead and do it if the rule book doesn't explicitly ban it? No. Transporting a bicycle (or indeed a cow) on a two wheeler, in my opinion, is NOT something responsible.

It seems some people do need a cow rack ...(images attached) :D

Maybe the market just isn't big enough to make "safe" cow racks LoL

OTOH, safe bike racks is given, matter of time before it makes its presence felt in India.

While Ashish expressed the need here, I know other friends who would like to own one.

Ashish, why doing you try exploring the option of a trailer, something in these lines - http://www.bikesatwork.com/blog/how-to-carry-a-bicycle-on-a-bikes-at-work-trailer-using-the-plywood-rack

Based on the roads here.
I don't think trailer is an option..

Police can apply the rule "causing dangers to others". There is a rule that we cannot protrude anything outside of car or auto except in the roof upward. I bet, the same can be applied on bikes.

Having said that, the best rack I had seen was a custom made one by KYNKYNY (http://www.kynkyny.com/). I saw the pic in their specialized kynkyny facebook I think. The design was to drag the bike as a trailer, with the front fork mounted on a skewer fixed on the rear of the bike (the rail behind the seat) and rear wheel will just roll on the ground. You need to carry the front wheel yourself. In their pic, they had another box as part of the setup where front wheel and a bunch of stuffs (helmet, spares) will be placed neatly. Someone should email Mr.69 to get the design. I commented on that pic saying that I was going to copy the design. But I cannot find in my activity log :(

And Opendro, what about your method of carrying it on a deo with no racks at all? I like that approach better.

thanks and regards,
Ashok

It was okay for an early morning in empty traffic. Otherwise, I wouldn't recommend that. BTW, I copied that method from Neera Katwal, the bullet runner.
