Hi,

Needed some help from the bike experts here - one of my friends is moving back to blr, and she has a road bike (Fuji), and wanted to know where she could get it assembled (it was boxed up for airline shipping). How much would this cost - she is currently jobless so she would like to get this done at a reasonable cost. also are there any events/classes planned where one could learn to set up/dismantle a bike?

thanks
rajeev

Hey Rajeev,

Unless you have all the tools and the know how on how to setup a road bike (or any bike for that matter), would recommend you drop by a professional bike store to get this bike unboxed.

Should be around 500 bucks to get it unboxed and setup.

If you want to do it yourself
You will need to do the opp of boxing the bike.

I'd agree with Rohan...and I'd ask your friend to

1. Go to BOTS and meet Rohan.
2. Get the cycle assembled there (you want a good job done, right?) It's a good thing, though, to watch while it is being done; then it will become easier to do it oneself. Did she watch while the cycle was boxed?
3. Get introduced to the cycling community, through you or him.
4. Start cycling, happily!

Bikes are boxed with either only front wheel removed or both wheels
removed.

If only front wheel is removed, assembly is as simple as putting on
the wheel, stem, bar and pedals.

If it comes with both wheels removed, usually the RD is also removed
and packed between the chainstays, so you would need to fix the RD and
rear wheel too.

All are easy jobs and can easily be done in 15-20 minutes but like
everyone has suggested, if she is diffident, take it to BOTS or
Wheelsports.

If she is comfortable with bicycle mechanics she can use this video

Hopefully the RD was wrapped around the chain stay and not disassembled completely. I suspect the head set was loosened and handlebars taken off along withe pedals removed.

Most of this can be done with some Crescent and Allan wrenches.

I totally agree with Rohan. 500 bucks is worth every penny when you have your bike assembled to the perfection for better ride quality and most importantly saving yourself from a disaster if the equipment was not installed right by yourself.

Rohan (BOTS) /Venky (Wheelsports) are you best bet!

I'd have to disagree,  Here in bangalore we still don't have good mechanics to fix your cycle problems, you have to turn into a mechanic most times you have a cycle related problem.
The first thing you've gotta know is how to box and unbox a bike. Fix flat tyres and tweak settings here and there.
Like somebody else said, you need only the allen key and the pedal wrench(it's part of the standard cycling toolbox)
That said, however  You should visit Rohan anyways to get your cycle checked and for other invaluable advice.

Cheers
sreekanth.

All things said and done, when you can buy a fuji why worry about the small trouble of travelling to bots and getting it done for 500 bucks!! I'm sure if she was not prepared to travel to bots or pay up atleast 500 bucks, this thread wouldn't exist.

Am I wrong in supposing this would probably be one of the older
(1970-90) Fuji steel bikes, as opposed to the newer ones?

Possibly bought not-new?

[Sometimes I wish I were in the US, since there are some very nice
road bicycles from that era going for peanuts there on CL]

You can thank us all you want but we're not done yet. You have to give us more details of the bike now and post beautiful pictures (of the bike!) and ride report once the bike is up and running. Its a mandatory requirement ;).
