Hi,

I am planning to sell my Garmin Forerunner 305 after realizing that I no longer use it during my runs and rides. Garmin Forerunner 305 is one of the best selling GPS watches and has been a highly rated on Amazon.

It has been sparingly used with the following usage statistics:

No. of activities tracked: 81 Activities
    Distance Logged: 810.12 km
    Time: 74:36:27 h:m:s

Like all my gadgets, this watch has been well handled and well taken care of!

What is for sale:

    1 Garmin Forerunner 305
    1 Doc
    1 Mini USB charging cable

NOTE: Heart rate monitor is not part of this deal.

Price: 7500 Rs.

One thing to watch out while buying a used Garmin is that the life of the device = life of the battery.

I'm not an expert, but Li-ion batteries work differently. It does not depend on the live of the battery. It rather depends on how much it has been used.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium-ion_battery#Disadvantages
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium_iron_phosphate_battery

In my opinion, the stories of old Li-ion battery going dead was history (yes, I had seen in cellphones of early years). For instance, I don't see any decrease in battery capacity of my cell phone (about 5 years old now) and my garmin forerunner 305 (about 2 years, but used often).

Somebody who has done enough research can enlighten us.

Ah... I'm not even sure if those old ones were Li-ion batteries.

Ah. I got a few myself: http://lifehacker.com/5875162/how-often-should-i-charge-my-gadgets-battery-to-prolong-its-lifespan
It says that it does have a lifespan and suggests that we don't charge to full or discharge to empty. But it generally does not talk about the lifespan in number of years, but rather in amount of usage.

Apple also has this to say: http://www.apple.com/batteries/ Batteries have limited recharge cycles and may eventually need to be replaced.

In any case, 74 hours of usage is hardly anything (he usually runs in Lalbagh and walkable from home, so assuming he does not drain at other times when not logging).

Sorry, I'm not trying to hard sell this item :-p I'm trying to understand a few things right.

Batteries are not replaceable ? Or the product itself is discontinued such that replacement batteries may not be available ?

Well, there are many devices, which for very seemingly dumb (but actually clever) reasons seem to ship with batteries that cannot be replaced, at least, not officially and with commonly found tools. Planned obsolescence is the reason, but for something that is so expensive, and for which technology isn't evolving very fast, it seems like a really dumb thing to do.

I remember Abhi from BZ doing some jugaad with his 305 battery n replacing it with some iPod battery or something - seemed to work fine on one of our tours IIRC.

Hi,

The current price in india  for garmin forerunner 305 is 10500 rs, with heart rate monitor.
Your friend has given a good deal with 25% discount. i.e, offer price of 7500 rs and as its 2 years old with no warranty on the battery, i think it would be better to purchase a new one shelling additional 2.5k.

You know trusting old battery  and old electronic items is out of scope. The best thing would be go with a new one with one year warranty available in Rediff.

some of the issues with garmin battery:

This is just my view, no offence to anyone.

Really eye-opening indeed. I didn't know that popping out and in of the battery is not supported. Really surprised for such an expensive device.

Hi,

Could you let me know where in India Garmin forerunner is sold? Because i bought it for $135 in Amazon year and half back and had it shipped via my friend. Some of my friends are enquiring about its sale in India. Your pointer will be helpful.

Good post, but its better to take first hand than to save 2.5k.

My friend has reduced the price to 5500 and with it, he is giving away the HRM monitor which he bought separately.

Thanks for that. This site does not have garmin listed in it. As far as i have seen there are no direct selling of garmin in india. Even in Ebay india  website, it is quoted 22k!

And i doubt that Garmin forerunner 305 is available for 10.5k in India.
