I had a bad experience at Garuda mall today, they have parking area that they say is for bicycles but its nothing more than the terrace of a construction site next door. I told the guys there that i will pay them their regular fee that they charge that they charge for the 2 wheelers but they just dont seem to care about it.
eventually i did manage to coax the parking in-charge to let me park , after 5 min of talking with him he let me park my bicycle at the parking space that they reserve for their staff.
When will they recognize the cyclist community. ?????

I feel your pain. I too had a very bad experience at Forum mall.  The
security staff just didn't budge, I had to take my bike back home.

I hope this changes, I'm spending way too much money on autos
whenever I'm going to a mall.

let's highlight this issue on the calls to FM radio channels and ask RJ's to exclaim the issue...
it reaches the larger audience & defames the malls,,,

Even car parking sucks in garuda. And otoh, giving space in their staff parking is a good thing imho!!

Actually Mr Bhaskar Rao has spoken to multiple malls and some 4 of them are ready to get a nice parking lot ready.
All that they are waiting for is some bikers to visit the malls and identify the location so that some parking slots can be put up.

At the moment its Forum and Garuda mall I think.

I can do the one in Jayanagar. Anyone else wants  to volunteer to spend sometime going to one mall and figuring out a good location for cycle parking ?

Need about 4 - 5 folks who can take up different malls in the city and Mr Bhaskar will get us the parking we want.

Cant really blame the security folks for chasing away cyclists. Lets get proper cycle parking, with nice signage and things will change.

I actually have a better story to relate.

I rode my bike to Garuda mall yesterday at lunch. The chowkidar
directed me to the rear of the building but I spoke to him (in Hindi
since I figured he was Nepali) and simply told him my bicycle was
expensive and probably more valuable than some of the beatdown
motorcycles in the place and that I wanted to go down. He looked quite
surprised but very nicely sent me down.

As I came down the ramp I was stopped by another guy but I explained
it to him and told him I was quite ready to pay the amount charged for
bikes. He smiled and said ok and directed me past another girl (who is
in charge of the two-wheeler section) who he explained things to. They
asked me to park it at the back against the wall (perfect for me since
I didn't have a stand). I found an entire section with a railing
against which I locked my bike.

They have an issue though - they are required to enter a license plate
number in order for the machine to spit out a ticket. They fudged one
for me (1234) but that isn't really a solution for them methinks.

On the way out, I gave my ticket to a couple of very amused ticket
collectors and sped off.

All told, they were really nice to me. I think you just have to take
the time to talk and explain things to them. If you explain that yours
is an expensive bike, they'll probably understand and help you out.

I can help with scouting at Garuda, but being a newbie, I'm not
entirely sure what to look for. I do think though that we need to find
a place next to a wall where a bar can be installed for locking of the
bikes.

Cheers

Rahul

Nice !

Typically I would like to earmark a space which could take about 10 bikes, with proper bike racks
Preferably in a secure place - visible, out of reach or having security closeby

If its visible and done up well, it could be a nice advertisement for cycling itself for the general public :)

On the charges front, lets pitch for a discounted charge ( if not
fully waived off) for cycles.

Count me in for the mall scouting in Jayanagar....there are three -

One near Jayadeva
One at Tilaknagar
One near woody's

I'd like to join you guys if you're going to scout these malls , Put up the actual plan of action

@rohan I think your plan sounds good about it doubling as an advertisement to the non-cyclists

So we have 2 folks at the moment - Shashank and Paul, who are willing to pitch in and identify parking spaces for bicycles in malls ?
Any more ?

Just email Lavanya incase you think you can pitch in - just needs 20 mins of your time.
And once the space has been identified, these folks just need to be informed ! So much easier than fighting with everyone to park you bicycles.

You can count me in for Garuda.

Rohan what are the procedures for scouting out these places? Who is
the admin person to be in touch with, etc.? 'Cos I don't want to be
arrested under suspicion of whatever just because some guard thinks
(rightfully) I'm checking out hidden places in the Mall basement :)

Also, how exactly do we know that all these malls are on board? Who
exactly is Mr.Bhaskar Rao (pardon my ignorance) and who in the malls
has given assurance?

Good point Rahul - we dont want to get into trouble doing this !

Lavanya (copied on this email) is going to be the contact person. She will be coordinating with Mr Bhaskar Rao and getting us all the malls that we have the permit for. Lavanya, once you have the names of the malls could you please broadcast this to the group ? That way folks can quickly coordinate and spend a couple of minutes coming up with recommendations and we can have the bike parking in these malls within a week !

Bhaskar Rao is the transport commissioner here and is a cyclist himself ! He is actively working with the community and trying his best to make Bangalore as cycling friendly as possible :) He was there at 5:30am on the prev 200km brevet ride to flag off the ride !! 5:30am mind you.

Another suggestion - in most Malls we have bike / sports shops who
could pick up the tab/sponsor the cycle stands.

For Instance, Forum Value Mall has SportsXS, Mantri Square has Jayant
Pro Bikes (Trek & Firefox) and also saw SportsXS coming up, Other
malls - Garuda/Forum/Esteem Mall have the Nike/Reeboks/Planet Sports,
etc .... We can tell the Mall Managements to get these guys to pick up
the tab. I am sure they will find it as a good marketing spot.

Hi all,

We have got the authorization letter from Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) for working with malls to include bicycle parking.
Apart from Mantri, Garuda and Forum that we started with, we can now talk to all the big malls and supermarkets.

We have 4 volunteers so far - Shashank, Paul, Rahul and Nitin. Who else is interested?
Do email me and we can 'share' the malls amongst us.

Cheers,
Lavanya

I can help cover these -- Forum Value Mall (Whitefield), Total Mall
(Airport Road), Total Mall (Madiwala).

Two malls are coming up outside my apartment complex in Doddanekkundi
(between Marathahalli & KR Puram, on ORR); one of those is slated to
open in few months, I believe. I can help cover that then. Would be
nice to have one open with a cycle stand from day one! :)

And along similar lines -- any plans to cover stores like Big Bazaar,
More, Reliance mart, etc. too? (atleast their bigger outlets.) Folks
going there (to shop) on bicycles might be unlikely; but they would be
a nice place to park, if we are going to some other place in the
vicinity.

thanks, -dhawal.

Thats great Lavanya.

Do we have a database of specific people in each mall to contact? Of
course we could petition them and suchlike, but the earlier
information in this thread made me believe that had already been done
and that we had a general buy-in from mall management. In which case
we could make a couple of calls and get started asap.

Lets get a start though before expanding. Better to get to
implementation of a few fast than expanding plans at this stage.
Anyway, word can be spread easily enough as we move on. What say? :)

You can add Bangalore Central Mall (MG Road) and Lido Mall (just past
Trinity Circle, MG Road).

I can do them too a bit later, once they've been contacted and
adequately briefed.

Lavanya,

Pls scan the letter from the commissioner addressed to different mall owners.
Share it with everyone .
Let them give the copy of the letter to each mall/supermarket.
we can also share the design of bicycle racks if some one asks.
so please be polite and make a appeal for space instead of demanding things.
people who learn music have to practice SA-PA-SAA 1000 times.
sa(bit less than normal pitch) - pa(little higher pitch)-SA (Very high pitch)-
if u want to enable cycling  keep ur pitch at "sa" (bit less than normal )

thanks for supporting this initiative of Ride a Cycle Foundation.

ive spoken to the garuda guys and a very nice chappie who is their
tech advisor. I have to meet him but unfortunately, in the last ten
days, he has only been free during the most inconvenient office hours.
Am due to call him this week so we can figure out a convenient time to
meet.
