Dear Bikers,
First, I am thankful to each one of you and your various inputs and suggestions you provided here and in person. As some of you know, I will be touring from Bangalore to Jaipur this very April.
The planning process is ready to be put in the pedal stage. My this semester exams will be done by 12th April, 2013 therefore, I wish to start my journey a day after on Sunday - 14th April, 2013.
The tour plan is as follows:
Day 1 : Bangalore - Chitradurga ( 212KM )
Day 2 : Chitradurga - Mundgod Tibetan Settlement (192KM)
Day 3: Mundgod - Sankeshwar (179KM)

Errr.. Already having doubts about whether I will be able to do 190-200KM+ rides for consecutive 3 days with 15-20KG luggage and April heat?
Yes, I can manage well. Luggage will bring down the speed but the elevation is quite flattish, 3rd day it climbs up a little though.

Still, it is not a sound plan. As touring must be a leisure ride, a chilled out 100-120KM ride where you wish to witness the majesty of the country and enjoy every moment.
I agree, but the motive of the ride is to witness the Incredible India with increasing numbers in the speedometer as fast as I can. I want to reach home ASAP and that is something I find beautiful too. It has been an year and my college also expects me to do a 21 day compulsorily internship *sigh*

You will be exhausted and also build up a lot of fatigue which will make upcoming days harder.
I have backup plans where I can crash at a number of 100-120 too :)

Day 4 : Sankeshwar - Karad (126KM)
Day 5: Karad - Pune ( 168KM)
Day 6 : Pune - Powai (Mumbai/ 147KM)
Day 7 : Mumbai - Vapi (162KM)
Day 8 : Vapi - Surat (113 KM)

Day 9 - REST

Day 10 : Surat - Vadodara (156KM)
Day 11 : Vadodara - Ahmedabad (124KM)
Day 12 : Ahmedabad - Karvada (157KM)
Day 13 : Karvada - Dungala (145KM)
Day 14 : Dungla - Bhilwara (115KM)
Day 15 : Bhilwara - Kishangarh (150KM)
Day 16 : Kishangarh - Jaipur HOME (100KM)

Day 17/18/19 - Sleep/Eat/Sleep/Eat :D

Phase 2 of the tour will be lil more difficult as I enter in Rajasthan on Day 12. Heat + Lonely long stretches of roads + Less eateries + Very less places to stay !

Hmmm.. So are you doing it 'A.L.O.N.E' ?
Well, Yes. I wish I have  company of people to come and ride along.

How long have you been biking? Do you know anything about bike maintenance?
-My cycle Diary (If you are interested, please take a look at my 111 days of biking)
- I am looking to learn the basic/extreme bike maintenance. Will be really really grateful if anyone from here can guide on that a little bit.

Having read all this, I believe that I may be able to find a companion rider for the tour or atleast from Point A to Point B.
Whatsoever I believe that I will see most of you on the 14th April, 2013 Sunday as the first pedal towards home sets the wheels in motion. Try to ride till Sira/Hiryur/Chitradurga (minimum - take it as a practice ride for next Brevet) :P and make the ride more memorable! So I believe that there is no other ride scheduled for April 14th :)
I have attached the logo of the tour below, hope you will like it. I made it using the alphabets of the tour itself      "R.I.D.I.N.G.     O.N.     E.M.O.T.I.O.N.S."

Second the heat advice. Maybe you should consider pumping during the evening and later at night and chilling during the heat of the day. Will see if I can join at the starting point.

All the best, Chirag. Like everyone here says, the heat will be your #1 challenge.

Some tips that may help:

On your Pune - Powai stretch, you'll not be able to ride on the Mumbai-Pune expressway. Instead, you'll need to take the the standard NH4 route through Lonavala. Tons of food options on the way and the road is pretty wide too. Post your route on BZ and you may get better routes from the locals there.

Applicable between Surat and Vadodara:
Prior to Ankaleshwar, go off the highway and take the route towards Bharuch. By doing that, you'll avoid the NH route where the main bridge is being repaired and avoid the traffic jam. Also, taking the route through Bharuch means that you'll go through the wonderful http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Bridge. This is also a shorter distance and you'll see no trucks for over 40km (the 2km Golden Bridge is super narrow and hence no trucks allowed). You'll also get decent food at Bharuch when compared to the highway route.

I think you should also carry some sort of a pollution mask as well. The industrial pollution along the Mumbai - Surat highway is disgusting and the blue smog sticks around throughout the day/night, for almost 50~100km! For that stretch, I was so glad I was in a car.

Cheers,
Sharath

Pradeep : Hahaha. I haven't been shaving from so long just for this tour. Planned to shave it with peace once I reach home :D

Anand and Darshan Sir: Nice to know that it is an auspicious day in the Tamil calendar ! Will be looking forward to see you at the start. I will start the ride from Christ University. I think touring is something which all of us from biking community look forward to.

Vasu, Ravi and Chiddu Sir : Heat will be a challenge for sure. The "HOT" tristate Brevet experience on Harohalli-Jigni climbs will come handy, I guess. Now, when I know the super technique of 'how to carry Gatorade on a bike' I think I can tackle the difficulties easily ! Will be expecting you at the start.

Golden Bridge looks soooooo amazing in the pictures itself. I will post the route on BZ as soon as possible, taking good notes of these suggestions is helping me to revise the plan very well.

Everything is doable provided:

a) you hydrate well.
b) eat good food - no, coke, gatorade, etc do not count as good healthy food. you need proper carbs - curd rice, carb supplements, meal replacement shakes etc.
c) you remember to wash your hands with soap when you eat. now, not all road side eating places in india might offer you this luxury so you gotta be careful,
d) you carry a hand sanitiser and use it effectively. make sure you don't end up with a bad tummy.
e) you behave like a wild animal - prowl (ride) at night and sleep during the afternoon. sleep lots.
f) ration your food properly
g) take care of your bike (almost) as much as you take care of your body
h) stretch your muscles at every break. anything that can be done in less than 10 mins is not considered stretching.
i) get your bike checked thoroughly. and then once more.
j) carry plenty of spare batteries and use a super bright light. additionally carry one with a helmet mount as well.

Your friendly Devils Advocate.

When I compared Shwalbe Marathon Plus with Schwalbe Marathon HS420,
I found that HS420 has +1 speed than the M/plus.

Even in the weight, HS420 weighs around 720grams while M/plus is 870grams.

HS420 is also cheaper :D

Be careful in the long ghat sections especially when u r riding downhill . Take frequent breaks and may be reduce the tube pressure to avoid blasts due to extreme braking.

How r u carrying all your stuff? The cheapest option is to hook up your back pack on the rear rack with cargo net.

Not sure whether it's wise to carry spare spokes, chain links, screws etc just in case. Or atleast have backup plans.

Hiiii everyone :)
Reached Hubli at 4:15 today.. Was a crazy ride in heat. In between mood was like blehh and it suggested me to take a flight from Mumbai. I was taking this tour more like some race rather than a 'leisure tour' .. I haven't even clicked a single picture yet :P

On highway stretches, riding alone gets lil boring. I happen to hitch a ride in a lorry for some kms and he took me off from the highway to a city - Haveri. It felt so good to see people and spoke to them about the tour :)
I guess, I will be taking off from the highway sometimes now to enjoy the city/village/town touch.

From tomorrow onwards it should be more fun, time is not my target now. Don't have any targets now :D Ride, enjoy, click, write maybe.

Thanks a lot to everyone for keeping a check on me :D

Sorry for not giving updates on Chirag's journey.. He left Hubbali , gropped Sakaleshwar and reached Nippani on 16th at 4 PM, mingled with locals, played foot ball !! Next day stopped at Satara and would have moved towards Pune Today morning.

I thing he is beautifully riding very strong in the early mornings as well as afternoon but reaching by 4 PM his destinations and relaxing.!!

Awesome journey.. Not sure about any blogs if he has written so far, nor about photos :(

We are all with you Chirag !!

While BBCh  race is on today.. chirag , Our lone rider to Jaipur raced yesterday against time , smashing 284 km in a day, reaching Surat by 7 pm !! { from Mumbai } thus saved a whole day !
He is planning to rest today.. Chirag is really blazing tarmac with stunning ease ..
I am sure we all are proud and now hope Jaipur is getting ready to welcome it's wonder kid !!

I am learning to use a smart phone !!

This is his sms today..

..."Vadodara, 160kms, flat 6 hours! Day 9 is already done :D . Was able to go off from the highway and take the route inside a place named Ankleshwar. From there I got to cross the river Narmada through THE GOLDEN BRIDGE. Witnessed something majestic : Check..."

I am not sure of this check part.. But we don't need  any check on his credo !!

I am, as they say,just a conduit..

And here is the story in Chirag's words :

"...Masocism must be the word for the day. Ahmedabad was bleh, decided to move up and enter Rajasthan. Left the highway to cut in through villages to save 40kms. Bingo! Ended up in 70kms off road, gravel, rolling climb madness. No eateries for 50km stretches, ENTERED RAJASTHAN, climbed and climbed and climbed to finish my 225kms, Day 10 in Kherawada."

He is really going blazing guns..!!

Chirag has just posted this on FB

"The highway police found me crawling. They stopped to check on me. Shared water, available banana and biscuit pack. The guy was very sure to call medical help by looking at my condition and after knowing my position in the day. He said that it will be really problematic for him, if something goes wrong with me in the heat. I put my bike in his jeep as he politely asked about my family and me. He dropped me to the bus stand, bought me some grapes, and instructed bus guy to atleast not let me leave the bus before Dudu - 60kms from Jaipur.
Hahhh didn't think it will have an end like this. Rode some 2200kms, met HUNDREDS of people and now I will be HOME soon."

Cheers

Hi All
Chirag reached Jaipur yesterday (Wed) night, way ahead of his planned schedule (supposed to  this weekend).
Talked to him this morning. He got up at 5AM to ride and realised he was home!
And the entire trip was puncture-less.
Way to go Chirag! Congrats.
Cheers
Ashok
