Hi guys,

Thanks and to answer some questions:

The 2 km swim is in the ocean. Part of the highway system was
shutdown for the bike leg race; it was 3 loops of 30 K -a nice ride
around the island with great views, but very hot from lack of shade
and radiation from the asphalt. Aid stations at every 30 and 60 K.
The run afterward was a half marathon done in 3 loops with far too
many aid stations ( almost every 1.5 K), along the beach ( but on
paved ground) and in the shade. More details of the race are available
at www.ironman703singapore.com.

As far as triathlon training is concerned, Coimbatore, is the
boondocks, but Bangalore would be no better in that respect. I
couldn't swim more than 2 laps freestyle ( I could do any number of
breast stroke laps) in March. Then I came across "Total Immersion
Swimming" , a concept that that claims to teach you to swim fish like.
It did wonders for me. It doesnt get you to swim very fast, but gets
you to swim very very relaxed and after a few months of that I feel I
can go on forever. However I am still pretty slow and in the ocean its
a whole different ball game . There are cantankerous currents and
bellicose stinging creatures and its always much slower than the pool.
Besides sighting and direction control become important. Again no sea
in Coimbatore , so the occasional business trips to Singapore were the
only opportunities to get some open water experience. In the ironman,
I barely made the cut off time of 1:10. Swimming is not about fitness,
its about technique. In fact some beer bellied guys seems to have the
advantage of buoyancy over the hard muscle types.

If swimming is an acquired skill, the bike leg is the money drainer.
Dont even think of doing an event like this on your mountain bike. You
need a road racer or even better a proper tri bike which has the aero
advantage, the lightness of carbon and the geometry to save your leg
muscles for the run afterward. The run is actually when you thank the
bike. I also invested in a computrainer which is a kind of treadmill
for your bike. There is no way you can get the training of continuous
speed and effort on the Indian roads.

Be prepared to spend about 12 hours a week on training. This means
waking up at 4:30 most mornings if you have a regular life of work and
family.

I will get my official splits in the next couple of days and photos
over the next few weeks. All I have now to show is a good looking
medal (see attached pic)

How happy am I at my performance? Not very - should have done better
on the bike. But the big picture - not bad given I didn't know s***
about a tri in February when Ashok Nath and a few other tri wannabes
met with Heather, an expat who had done some tris.

Whatever you want to know more about, just ask. Will be my pleasure.

Sridhar

Hey Sridhar,
You are an inspiration to me.
Sometime i would like to do this, but i wont know when i am prepared.
Just a question, can we have some similar kind of (Atleast) half ironman organized (In not so organized way) here.
We find a place we can do it and anounce on different forum, interested ppl get togather at the venuw at given time and date. And we just do it.
We can atkeast gauge ourselves ith such things.
Thanks and Regards,
~ Ravi

Open waters will be a tough bet but biking+running is doable and
infact we've done a couple of dualthlons before.
The only option for swimming would be in one of the corp pools.

I am wondering if Ulsoor or Sankey or one of the other lakes in and around bangalore are okay for swimming. Would it be possible to organize a swim in them...

You would have to be a very brave man to enter any of these lakes.

The Total Immersion swimming sounds interesting. Are there any classes in Bangalore?

navdeep its half ironman what sridhar did,not full ironman..
ok coming to training, since my actual goal is to be able to complete a full ironman,i have
actually started training but in a disorderly manner..by this i mean, in a week i swim/bike/run
atleast once, but have never practically done it together..when it comes to tri-trainin the biggest probs are finding places to swim/bike/run..no place at all to swim as in open water..
problem wid pool is gets highly boring to do abt 50 laps..also there are lots of beginners who
come in the way..

and btw i dont plan to do full ironman until i have done some triathlons and half ironmans;-)
ciao

You can join the St. Joseph's European High School on Museum road pool.
It has merely 4-5 members (for a reason) the pool ain't great but will
suffice for practice - u wud have to do many laps though. For running u
can use their ground. I thought I will start with jogging but never got
started - so limited to cycling n swimming only at the moment. I m now
trying the pool at St Joseph's Indian high school - again nice pool with
a lot of beginners. Swimming along the breadth is a pain!! :( will join
the European pool again I guess.
