Dharwad-dandeli patchy roads.
Dandeli- kadra well maintained
Kadra -karwar is good but can be patchy in 4-5 stretches (max 2km in each such zone)

Enjoy your trip :)

this route is through Anshi national park. this area is not very well maintained and the forest is dense along the road soon after monsoon otherwise in summer it is generally less denser. Road is not maintained unless you are lucky to get recently laid top coat. through out the stretch it is quite deserted and certainly not recommended for one or two guys - if it is a large group of atleast 10 people and ride is strictly between sunrise and sunset then it is fine. the entire road will have beautiful tree shades and very winding. traffic is low. very few KSRTC buses ply through this route and rest all are of less number of private cars and rest is trucks. for a long interval you will not get any village to re-fill your bottle or stomach - so better carry more. I would suggest to have a support vehicle going along with the group. if there is woman in the group, then please plan meticulously in terms of stocks and safety and toilet facilities. Safety is top concern. it is almost 160 kilometers. no riding in the dark please.

Had done Dharwad to Ganeshgudi via Anshi (enroute to Goa) in 2012 on a motorbike and thats when it was being dug up for double road to be laid. recently heard few of my relatives took same route and it was all smooth and tarred all the way.

It does get dense and lonely at times but as long as its day time its safe to travel on this route. We saw a lot of two wheeler traffic.

thanks to all the suggestions, 3 of us successfully completed 240kms of ride in 3 days from Dharwad to Karwar via Dandeli and Anshi.
Well as far the road is concerned it is Butter, that's coming from a 700X23c tire.
90% of the road is newly laid and in superb condition.
thanks to BBC, this google group is a wealth of information. I searched and got lots of information needed to plan my trip.
will post ride report later.

Hello Sir,

We are 4 cyclists planning to do the same route in the following weekend. It looks like there are only 2 cyclist groups who has done this stretch. One of it is you. Some advice from your experience will really help
1) Animals!!! cats especially. Do we need to worry about them during the day? We are only cycling in day time.
2) Forest officials: Are cyclists restricted at many check posts? Will we be allowed in through the Anshi tiger reserve? We are cycling only on the NH strictly.

Absolutely no issues on that route, when we went the entire stretch had very good condition roads.
Again as far as our experience no issues with any animals or forest officials. Lots of uphills and a final downhill after Anshi.

Our route:
Dharwad->Ganeshgundi
Ganeshgundi -> Kaiga
Kaiga -> Karwar

This is still one of our best trips, all the best enjoy.

Generally,  the  road sees a bit of trucks though less frequent.  Cats are rare to find unless you venture out of the tar roads

No restrictions on any vehicles as  such. If you stick to NH,  you will not pass through the core anashi reserve.
While going from dandeli to Kadra,  you will rarely see  human habitation after potoli barring joida,  kumbharwada and anashi spanning ~80-90 km.
But it is mostly downhill and you will be able cover in a day comfortably.
We did the  reverse route from karwar to ulavi but still managed to get to ulavi...
Passing through deadly silence in the  anashi reserve for 18km was a lifetime experience :)
