I had dropped by at the Gopalan Mall-Bannerghatta Road yesterday evening on my way back from work, and I was very pleasantly surprised by the parking experience.

In many malls the security at the entrance either refuse to let you in, or reluctantly allow you in, and tell you to park in some dingy corner. Here I was waved in, got to park in the 2 wheeler parking ( no dedicated cycle stand, but I have a side stand on my commute bike so no problems there). Saving the best for the last, when I was at the exit and I stopped to pay the parking fee, the collection lady politely told me I dont need to pay. I asked her if parking is free in the mall, she said no, it is charged for vehicles, but parking is free for Bicycles.

Gopalan mall will definitely get more of my business ;-)

Had the same experience in Forum last month when I went to watch a
movie , the guard politely asked me to take my clip on lights and
panniers with me and when I left parking guy told me it was free for
bicycles ...

Good to hear that. Especially if its on your way home. It'll make a
good plan for a movie on weekdays. Let me know if anybody want to join
me sometime next week :).

Second for Forum, Koramangala as well. Have taken my bike there
once(they have a dedicated parking space for bicycles) and while i was
inside i was constantly worried whether she was ok or not....(the
perennial worry of someone tampering with it).

Was relieved and pleasantly surprised to see the bike still intact and
in the same place....the bonus was that the parking folks didn't
charge me a paisa! :)

Just to confirm, the free parking is at Sunshine or the main building. Because my experience, although separated by many months, is that at main building I had to pay Rs 10 for parking anywhere I wish while at Sunshine it was free and dedicated and in direct view of the security.

charge for parking.

And likewise at Central Mall on the ORR near Bellandur. They have a separate parking area for bikes at ground level, it is outdoor so subject to the elements but quite visible to a number of guards so I felt my bike was quite safe. Also, they have a side entrance to the mall right there near the bicycle parking which is quite convenient.

Central (MG road & JP Ngr), Big Bazaar's total Mall, Lifestyle & Garuda Mall @ all these places I use park my bicycle at some isolated place of my choice, lock it to a pillar, fixed metal barriers or the stationary rods... no one posed a question.

I have parked my bicycle on several occasions at Sigma mall on
Cunningham Road without any fuss. I was directed to park in the lowest
basement that had space exclusively for cycles. Most of the parked
cycles seemed to be the ones you would expect someone working in the
mall would ride.

However, it was the probably the least desirable part of the mall,
since there was a garbage collection center in the basement. All that
waste from the food courts and McDonalds ends up creating a not too
pleasant odor.

Still, it was free parking and since my Merida has no sense of smell,
I guess its OK.

Sarath - do you really have to make a joke of this important information? To top it, its not even funny! As a punishment, go find some awesome bike parking at your favorite eating joints and post it here :)

Thanks all for the information, parking facilities go a long way in making commuting on the bike a much better experience. Here's what I have to share:

At both the airlines corner house and yelahanka corner house, they let you bring your bikes in and keep it in your sight while eating ice cream :) Hope this information helps some ice cream freaks like me :)

I am relatively new to the cycling zone. I wonder how you people lock your cycles when you go to malls/shops/any other place. I always have in mind that someone might come up with auto rick and load the cycle, or can break the lock open and carry the cycle away. So, can you throw light as how to protect the cycle from being carried away? Is there any circuit that beeps when someone try to touch the cycle ? :)

Krishna Chandu

Krishna - it is very simple - keep your cycle in a basement when you go to mall/hotels.I am sure no one will lift it in an auto there. Where there are no basements, lock it to any stationary object with a cable lock (don't use chains) to iron poles not electricity poles (they are dangerous), small trees. If no such object lies, just keep it in front of your sight (even if the cycle is locked) or at least keep it there for not more than 30 mts. But I believe in Bangalore there are more Motorbike lifters than Cycle Lifters. In the past (1990s). there was a special branch in Bangalore to curb Cycle Thefts (CCB - earlier referred as Cycle Crime Branch), but now CCB solves other type of crimes (now called Central Crime Branch).

There are no circuits available, but you may try, build and patent one for a cycle similar to the ones available in cars/bikes (Anti-theft system)

Forum value mall, whitefield too has a dedicated cycle parking space that is guarded heavily! (it stands overlooking the security office and they have a barricade for the space and) theres a guard sitting next to it and salutes you and opens while you arrive. he also takes your helmet and deposits in the helmet room and gives u the token. best part is all of this treatment is free! :D

Also lock your seat to the frame. People have reported thieves trying to steal the seatpost along with the seat. Maybe they wont do it from a mall but why risk it?

Carry two locks. Lock each wheel with two locks to the frame and route both locks through the pole.
