My First Brevet Experience
2011 was the year which saw my attitude to life change and I began to look after my body. But my early attempts didn't bear fruit and by May 2012, I weighed a whopping 97 kgs with 32% body fat. Became very strict in my lifestyle choices, nutrition and exercise and by March 2013, came down to 72kgs with 12% body fat. The route to this was a good mix of right nutrition, rest and exercise.

But then, I wanted to add some entertaining stuff to my routine and that's were cycling pitched in. Started cycling and then decided to do long rides, simply because I love the roads and the freedom of riding.

Huliyurdurga 200 , the ride looked tempting enough to give a shot. Sent out a few mailers in my company cycling group for partners and Vinay Shankara responded with a yes. Saw the registeration link open, and registered over the weekend.

Being the first ever Brevet that I would be taking part in, I asked Vinay on the checklist for the same. The following were some of the stuff that I acquired over the weekend before the Brevet, apart from some essentials that I already had.

1) Hybrid Bike -: Schwinn Sporterra Sport from Fitness Through Travel. Upgraded from my Rockrider 5.0
2) Puncture Kit -: Collected from Cadence 90, FTT and Decathlon
3) Allen Key Set -: FTT
4) ORS sachets -: From some hospital on my previous car trip to Bekal
5) Water Bottles -: 1 from Decathlon and 1 shaker bottle from my gym equipment
6) Cycling shorts -: Decathlon
7) Tube -: Flipkart
8) Lots of Chikki packets
9) Handpump -: Decathlon
10) Headlights -: Flipkart
11) Extra Batteries -: Local shop

Kiran from FTT gave a fellow Brevet rider, Ananth, my contact number and we decided to ride together.

D-Day arrived and I was excited about the Brevet. Had set-up a meeting time of 4:45AM with Ananth at BTM, but due to some issues, Ananth asked to go ahead and he would catch up later. I slowly cycled to IISC starting point and reached there just before 6 AM. Got the bike checks and stamps done.

Met Vinay, Sylvester and a few more guys there. My navigation skills, being very poor, I decided to ride with someone who has those skills. Also my pace is better when riding in a group.

First Part
The entire group assembled at IISC started off at 6:10AM and till the NICE road intersection was crossed, most of the group was together. Then the split-up happened. The faster group just steamrolled past and the slower group started falling behind. I was left alone, and my first aim was to reach the first checkpoint. Midway through, Ananth (on Bianchi Nirone 7 Road bike) , caught up with me and we started riding together. The pace increased and we went smoothly till the first checkpoint. We kept hydrating ourselves at regular intervals.

In between, during a climb, my left leg slipped from the pedal and my left ankle twisted. Happened around the 30 km mark. I started pedalling in a way to protect the left ankle.

Reached first checkpoint at 8:20 AM (47.2kms), got the card stamped and had a good breakfast of Thatte Idli. Rested for 10-15 mins, met some people who arrived a bit late, exchanged greetings and started off again.

Second Part
Ananth and I then set off for the 2nd part of the ride at a pretty nice pace, of around 24kmph. Neither too fast nor too slow. Enjoyed the village roads and the villagers were also guiding us through the path taken by the lead group. In between saw a fellow rider fixing a puncture on his road bike. Enquired if all was fine, and on being given the thumbs-up, we went ahead. The routine of hydrating, resting and starting continued.

Then, we realised that we have lost way. We asked the villagers for any cycle group, and they replied in the negative. Suddenly the mood changed and we started feeling down in the dumps. We realised that at 116kms, which was the km reading for the 2nd checkpoint, we were still 30kms away from checkpoint (as per google maps). Motivation went down and we sat down to decide on next course of action.

On the way, I pulled my right calf muscle, and was in pain. On the left leg, with me trying to protect my ankle, I ended up injuring the inner muscle near the knee. I was in pain all through now.

Decided that we will reach the Maddur checkpoint and then take a final decision. Pedalled hard and reached the checkpoint at 12:44PM (closing time of 1:44PM). I decided that since we still reached 1 hr before closing time , we should continue.

Third Part
Ananth had, unfortunately, already lost the mental battle, though physically he was in a much better shape than me. The extra 30 that we pedalled had taken a toll on us, both in terms of time and energy. He said he will quit at Channapatna. I tried to dissuade him saying that we had already pedalled so much, so why not finish it off!!!! All in vain.

We split ways at the Channapatna Bus Stop. Ananth handed me the cue sheet (mine was lost someway in between) and a bar of chocolate (a BIG THANKS for that). I decided to pedal all the way through, since I have embarked on this.

Without Ananth setting the pace and giving me a visual aim, I lost significant pace. Somehow dragged myself till Machinibele Dam (15 kms after Ramanagara) with breaks every 5 kms. The speed was so low, that I started wondering if I would complete it in time.

There's a very steep slope after the Machinibele Dam which leads to the final checkpoint. Started climbing that , and lost motivation in between. Stopped under a tree to have a sip of water and suddenly saw Sylvester coming up the slope. I was so happy to see someone, that my energy came back up. We pushed the cycle till the top of the slope and started pedalling together. Pace increased again and we were talking to and encouraging each other most of the way.

Started enjoying the ride again, in spite of the severe pain in both my legs. Reached the final checkpoint at 4:28PM (closing time 5:28 PM). Rested there for 10 mins, had bananas and slice and got refreshed. Sylvester also gave me some magic spray to apply to my hurting legs. The pulled muscle started relaxing, but the left knee muscle was burning.

Final Leg
33 kms in 2.5 hrs. .... YEAH!!!! Very much possible and easy in fact. Or so we thought. The last 33 kms though was much more difficult that we imagined. I was literally pedaling with only my right leg. My left leg wasn't able to impart any power.

After fighting through bullish Bangalore traffic, rain, slush and what not, we finally reached the end point at 7:12PM , just 18 mins before closing time.

The feeling was one of great relief and satisfaction!!!!! Ananth and Sylvester, a big thanks to both of you. Without you guys, I wouldn't have made it.

Was very happy that my first Brevet was done and now I know how to plan for the next longer ones that I'll be participating in.

A big cheers for the riders who took part in the Brevet!!!!

Thanks guys for the encouragement.

As for losing weight; its very simple

1) Understand your body type
2) Chart down your regular activities
3)  Write down your food and drink habits.
4) Change it to match your activities.

A general tendency in modern Indian diet is the over reliance on Carbs and Sugar and very less protein. That needs to be looked into seriously. The 3 main things to make sure to lose weight in a healthy way is

1) Nutrition -: As I mentioned above
2) Rest -: Body needs to be given rest. At least 8 hrs of sleep at regularized times. Haphazard times of rest is also detrimental.
3) Exercise -: As cyclist, most of you get good exercise for the heart and legs. But what about core, back, shoulders, neck etc etc.... Also the exercise intensity, pattern etc should vary according to body type.

If anyone is really serious and interested in getting better overall fitness and bring a positive change to life, do mail me. Be warned , that there will be heavy intrusion into every aspect of your life :-D

Regards
Krishnan

Cycling mainly works on Core..

But

1) Understand your body type.. how do u understand ?
2) Chart down your regular activities.. I burn 5000 cals in a day, i have recorded this. Yet i am putting on weight.
3)  Write down your food and drink habits... regular foods...but i guess little protien and no bcaa, thats the key i think
4) Change it to match your activities... I think i have hit plateau.. or m i over doing it?

But i recently checked, i have hypo thyriod, thts why i was gaining weight.. Can any body share more inputs on this pls..

Did you mean 5000 cal or 5000 Cal? (note: 1 Cal = 1000 cal)

In my theory, one cannot simply gain weight out of thin air. If one is in deficit of intake when compared to expenditure, he has to lose weight. However, some are born lucky, like me, who can eat tons of food still without any gain in weight. You can call it inefficient engine as it waste the fuel or efficient one as it knows how to handle excess fuel :-P

Having said that, I truly believe that one cannot become overweight with my food habits. My food hardly has any fat, not consciously, but by habit. When people call 12 hours gap as fasting, I often spend 24 hours without food/water and at times with even more activities. I eat breakfast once in a blue moon. I don't take any milk products such as tea/coffee/curd/etc (not vegan or vegetarian, but as a habit) and I utterly hate Indian (sugar) sweets and chocolates. Now... think, how else will I gain weight? But I eat lunch like pig and often dinner too. I hate to eat before I feel hungry.

150mcg is the highest strength, when is the next blood test been advised, please get tested for thyroid antibodies as-well and lipid profile, doctor should be able to advice to cut down on thyronorm strength as soon as possible. get over your weakness and cut down on peanuts. irregular thyroid function can play havoc on your body and mind. take care. if your fine with alternative system of medicine give it a try, they can help you better in recovering.

BTW, I had been eating chicken almost every other day for the past two weeks in an attempt to gain a few kgs. My usual weight is around 59 or 60. And I crossed crossed 62 kg in two weeks just with chicken (grilled with a lot of fat dripped down). So, I too believe that it should be possible for me to gain weight if I change my food habit.

I can understand the frustration Pradeep. You will find a workable solution soon (I believe). BTW, I know it is not 5000 calories. I simply put the question just to knit pick on you. Even one single ml of vegetable oil gives 9000 calories. A person like me of 60 kg at the age of 38 would burn a million (more than 1,000,000 calories) per day just resting the whole day.

So, you would have meant 5000 Cal.

Hahaa LOL. That is the difference. I didn't give them up. I never started them. Culturally, Manipuris don't take any other milk once weaned from mother's milk. And you know how horribly tea or coffee taste without milk. Yes, Manipuris do take a bit of tea (black/red tea) with sugar and lemon/ginger or whatever, but that is once in a blue moon again.

Actually, even if one wants to drink milk, it is very difficult to find cow's milk there even today. And yeah, we absolutely don't have any form of sweet at all. Our snacks are typically raw vegetables (named "shingju") and sour fruits in summer :-) It is a different world there.

One should be least bothered about calcium, because it is there in all that grows on the ground and in all that moves and in all that is part of the ground :-D

True, if you eat enough vegetables, you will get enough calcium. And people there eat vegetables in boiled form along with the soup or in raw form. So, almost all nutrients are retained in the food.

Life without sweet !

Opendro, you are a super fit person. Trying out little bit of sweet will not make much of a difference on your fitness level 😄😄😄. A small friendly suggestion - next time when you do 1000 or 1200 brevet, please carry a pack of ten Haldiram's Motichur Laddu of current date production - trust me it will bring you back to the end control point with many many hours to spare. Please share your experience once you do that 😄😄😄

At all times during my lifestyle change and diet correction, I was monitoring all medical aspects of my body. It was not a blind following of any diet or method, neither is it low calorie diet.

At no point during the diet, was I starving or hungry or exhausted or weak. It when following diets which restrict the intake of food, and people end up being hungry, that that scenario mentioned in the article comes about.

Anyways, thanks for the article Soney. I have seen this trend in a lot of people who followed a lot of fancy diets, and I too was one of them. No diet will work over a long term, if it involves starving the body. The body will hit back.

To complicate matters, in my opinion, starve != hunger != weak.

Sometimes, the "feeling hungry" can be just a false alarm, which means that your body does have food in the digestive system and/or body has a lot more energy reserves, but due to a change in eating schedule or whatever, the brain just thinks that one needs to eat.

Starvation, if it is meant to indicate completely empty and cleaned up digestive track, is bad.

Again, feeling weak could also be a malfunctioning of the system such as unable to switch to reserves or trying to switch. Sometimes, I too feel the frailties of hunger, just body and limbs feel weak but continue for a while without food and body regains strength after a while.

Sorry, I have explained in pure simple experience way. I currently don't have a scientific answer to it. But I'm convinced that starve != hunger != weak.

"Starvation, if it is meant to indicate completely empty and cleaned up digestive track, is bad".

Does fasting is different from the above, that is good at least once in three weeks?

Opendro-: Not sure if you misunderstood me. I never said that they were equal.

The key of what I wrote is, there is no deprivation for the body in any way. I would also say, that making the body to give signs that one must take food, or there is a lack of water or energy or salt or anything; is also not so good. This frequently leads to over-eating and indulgences. Eating the right food at fixed times and regular intervals ensures that there is constant supply and the urge to over-eat vanishes.

Its the same as keeping oneself hydrated and supplied with calrories during long rides. We are always advised to take it before actual thirst or tiredness hits us.

Anil-: Fasting is different from staying hungry. Fasting is done on a person's own will. Hunger need not be. The person might be wanting to have food, but either has to not take it or doesn't get it. Fasting might be good, though I do not advocate it. One day a month fruit diet though, makes a world of difference.

Krishna, I said just for academic discussion :)

Chidu, what is the time gap between to eating sessions that you would consider fasting? If that is just about 24 hours, I do it very often, more often than once a week or should I say - after every heavy lunch. Or does it have to be - going full empty in the system for at least 24 hours - I would find that a bit difficult and doubt its benefits.

The weakness is because the body and brain is not conditioned to use ketones. They are tuned to consume glucose as the main energy source. The one benifit of ketogenic diet is you can fast without feeling weak for quite some time. I regularly fast for 36 hours (and also work out in b/w).

Fats/frying/eating chicken by itself does not add weight. Its those grains that you eat that are the culprits. Fat rich food is very high in satiability and hence enforce self regulation.(It is very difficult to over eat them)

With regards to calcium, the secret is to prevent loss of calcium. Most modern food increases acidity in the body and the kidneys have to induce neutrality. This is achieved by cosuming the easiest and largest source of basicity which is calcium. Veggies and fruits increase basicity. Dairy Products while provide calcium also hasten the process of calcium loss in the body.

As a guy who never understands these technical concepts, I am gonna eat in moderation, work out in moderation, sleep well and lead a happy life! It is too bloody stressful trying to understand ketones, calcium, loss of calcium, potassium and all other high funda concepts in this mail :-) And that NY Times article confused me even more!!!

Adding to what Apurv has mentioned.  we should avoid drinking RO or demineralized water.

if this helps -

cheers

Exactly.... And it is really fun understanding why body needs each stuff, at what quantity and what each stuff can do to the body... You get to know yourself better as well... :)

And that is a problem because???? I am a huge Calvin and Hobbes fan (as u can see from my profile pic) .... Low self expectation is the key to a contented life :-) .....

Ashok - this is exactly what I find stressful :-) ... e.g. if I find out pani puri affects me, it will freak me out ... I would rather have an occasional pani puri and accept the risk :-)

And while we are on this topic, one more gentleman has written we should not have RO water!!! I am gonna ignore all that and drink any water that does not look dirty and some other human being is drinking it :-)

Pani puri will affect you if your intake is more than your body burns, and for that fact any stuff... You must know how much to take and when to stop.. Otherwise, even though you find yourself comfortable in the couch for the moment, in the future you could get a shock of your life out of some medical checkup and will end up leading a life which is much lower than moderate or mediocre... :) Obviously, you take care of it intentionally or unintentionally when you say an occassional pani puri....

Don't you like to know how an automobile works? how it responds to throttle, brakes, slippery surfaces, ABS, ESP, traction control etc etc, and how all these are implemented? Don't you find strategy games interesting where your immediate success may never correspond to long term success? I find the way body responds to the inputs too equally if not more interesting. May be it's all about perspectives... And being able to know your fitness and track it and keep it under your own control is really amazing, isn't it?

Ashok

By and large "ignorance is bliss" works well. But if someone really does not care, even awareness is not going to make one unhappy or freaked. For instance, a heavy smoker (five cigars per day) may still find cigars much more enjoyable in spite of knowing that his getting lung cancer is 24.4% (one in four). Same goes with people who enjoy cars, buildings on deforested land, etc. etc.

BTW, the water thing is true. We shouldn't drink water which does not have minerals. So, ensure that your RO or filter does not remove minerals. I generally fetch water from BWWSB (Cauvery) tap and let it settle for a while (for dirt to settle down and for chlorine to fade off) and drink that. I give the same to my small kids.

Another classic case of a thread being hijacked and pulled off course way too far. The title of the thread talks about brevet finishing experience, and after 3-4 messages it ends up being a full fledged discussion on body weight and fitness. I don't want to play spoil sport here, but is there some way one could change the title of the thread to something more appropriate??

Hi Satya,

I'd wish I could appreciate the simplicity in what you said. The problem is that knowing what is moderation needs understanding of nutrition and how the body works. It is no rocket science.
Some of us are gifted with sky high metabolic rates and dont need to do much. Some like me have very low metabolic rates and need to really work hard to maintain a healthy body.
I dont mean to take a dig at what you said, but things that seem straightforward are not so straightforward.
I think the best strategy is generally to look at animal eating habits (carnivorous) and try to simulate it.

About demineralized water -

One needs to outweight benifits against potental health hazards. So its not a straightforward thing every one can follow.

Thanks and Regards,

Low metabolic rate is not necessarily a bad thing. It means more stamina

Low metabolic rates must be coupled with extremely good eating habits. Other wise, you end up with different problems. Also, what does stamina exactly mean?
