So plans are brewing for a Saturday morning trip to Nandi Hills. I
vote for a not-so-obscenely-early-that-it-makes-you-weep rendezvous at
the highway exit. Samim+company are planning to ride in from Hebbal
Flyover. I'll post meeting times once the votes are in.

Thanks,
Rushi

I am interested.

Last Sunday while biking up Nandi Hills I met a Swiss guy, Georg, who it seems has biked all around Bangalore and knows all kinds of off road trails around nandi Hills. Perhaps I can get him to come and or have him give us directions. There is also a dirt trail that I've seen on the left on the way to the top of nandi Hills that I'd like to explore and or the surrounding hills.

Summary: I vote for exploration off road around Nandi Hills if there is interest. The scenery seems quite exotic and worth our efforts.

Hi Madhu,

Since I've lost my laughing-at-flat-mountain-bike-tires rights due to
the flat I had on our last ride, I hope to stick to nicely paved roads
for a change. But it's a free world, of course and I'm sure there will
be enough interest for that too :)

Are you driving part of the way too? You coming for this
www.gocycle.in thing Sunday?

Thanks,
Rushi

Count me in for this. I'll drive up to the highway exit and pedal from there. I plan to bring my car and can take someone along with me.

Hi All,

I am a newbie to BBC. I am interested in doing this trip. However, I do have some (self) doubts, so I'd appreciate if more experienced riders tell me if I can attempt this trip.

1) Have you decided on a particular Saturday ?

2) My biking experience so far:
  • regular commute to office (6.5 km each way) - 4 times a week on average
  • Approx 8 long distance trips ranging from 40 to 70 kms (all single day trips - mostly on normal roads).  I have to admit I huffed and puffed/ walked a little bit from 55km to 70km on the last trip.
  • I average about 15-16 kmph on normal terrain
  • No mountain climbing experience yet
3) Equipment:
  • Hero Octane (21 gears, aluminium frame (still quite heavy though), disc brakes, suspension)
Does it suit for the trip ?

4) I live in Anand Nagar (near RT Nagar) - about 2 kms from Hebbal flyover. I don't think I can ride from Hebbal all the way to Nandi hills, climb up & return.

5) What's the approximate timing for this trip ? Do we go in the morning and come back in the afternoon / evening ?

Warm regards,
Kiran

How long will it take to cycle from Hebbal to the highway turnoff? How
long is it from the highway turnoff to Nandi and back?

Kiran, I never discourage any biker. But the hero octane might be a pain-in-the ass for this trip.

Its going to be a pretty steep ride and your rear suspension is just going to bob all the time and kill the ride !
Suggest you look around for another bike for this ride ... you might not even need front suspension as the roads are pretty decent,.

Hi All,

Thanks for the suggestions & the encouragement. Unfortunately, I don't have any other bike that I can arrange for at a short notice, so I'll try with my octane itself.

I don't have a car, so I have to hitch a ride in some one's car from Hebbal flyover to the Nandi hills crossing & back. Jagan, is the place in your car booked already ?

Any other things to take care of ? I don't have biking helmet / knee caps/ biking shorts.. Pls suggest a shop where I can buy them.

Warm regards,
Kiran.

Kiran,

Ask Venkatesh if he can bring you some stuff on Saturday.
Unfortunately, my car is already full (two bikes + two people). Get
plenty of water. There should be food upstairs :)

Thanks,

I assume it will be atleast a 4 hour round trip. Add another couple of hours to get back and we should be back in Bangalore by 1:30 or 2:00. Are my calculations correct?

Hi folks,

I don't think I can make it then, as I need to be back by 10:00 am latest. I will definitely try this some other time, though.

Is anyone interested in a shorter ride around Sarjapur Road and surroundings? We'll start at 6:00 and finish by 9:00 or 10:00 latest.

If I go all the way to Nandi Hills, i do want to complete the climb. Unfortunately, most Saturday mornings are too hectic with a lot of pending things, so I am limited in the time available for rides.

I'm planning to try the Sarjapur-Attibele-Anekal-Bannerghatta ride tomorrow. In case someone is interested, let's meet at the Sarjapur Road-ORR junction at 5:45 and leave at 6:00.

So, in all looks like there are two groups in all.
1. Road racers
2. Off road Bikers

I want to do both.
So, Madhu (the off road gang), what time are guys planning to start and from where?

The Road racers gang plans to start from Hebbal by 6:30, which would mean we are there on the top of Nandi only by 8 or later. I think by then the Off-road gang would have left, so prabably we (Me and Nilesh) will synch-up with Madhu and try to catch with off-raod gang. So Madhu, please keep your mobile swictched-ON.
Me and Nilesh plan to go for a really long exploration (6-7 Hours) and will be back only by evening. So even if we can not ctach with the off-road gang i think it is fine :-)

Looks like this saturday the Nandi-betta will be shorter by at-least 1/2 inch as all the healty ppl (from RFL, BBC and Bikezone) are coming there.

Apologize for contributing to this flood..

I Will be starting from the Highway exit at 0700. My swiss friend with the knowledge of the trails has not confirmed. If he shows up then we and you (Ravi) can decide how to join up and explore. If he doesn't show up then I will join you (Ravi & co) and we can decide how best to explore the surrounding hills / countryside. I definitely want to try the dirt path to the mid section of Nandi as this may make a great running uphil trail.

I am sure we will pile up on each other around the curves. It is after all a damned small hill!

It was a really good ride today with quite a big turnout (11 riders in all). 5 of us started from the highway exit and the rest from Hebbal flyover, they caught up sometime during the climb. There were quite a few road bikes (5 out of 11), We spent a lot of time at the restaurant at the top and probably ran up the biggest bill ever at that place:-)

The highlight was the ride downhill which got over a little too quickly for my liking. The drive back to Bangalore was painful, almost 1:15 minutes from hebbal to HSR, a taste of things to come when the new airport opens:-(
