I have been using this http://www.dx.com/p/1-5-lcd-electronic-bicycle-speedometer-1xcr2032-101777#.VcHJ9dWDFHw for a long time. Awesome if you ride in the nights. I loved them during my brevet rides.

This can be fit on handlebar as well as stem.

Now that smartphones are cheaper than cycle computers, and come with GPS/GLONASS support standard, are there apps (Strava?) that give you live speed and other parameters? For number of revolutions, I guess you would still need the magnetic pick-up as a wired/ wireless accessory.

strava can obviously be used, but its not a practical alternative if ur traveling really long distances.
As you're phone's battery would drain off.

Besides, the risk of strapping on a $300 phone on the handlebar vs a $5 cyclocomp is a no brainer.

That is not the only point. Which phone battery will last for 4 days of ride with GPS on? I would rather look at the distance sign posts and calculate my speed and coverage in the mind itself than using a phone ;)

Correct.
I was comparing it to a $300 cycle computer, and not a cycle speedometer. The former would still have similar issues as the smartphone wrt battery life, but is clearly built to be a lot more rugged out of the box.

Nobody sells just the speedometer. Even the $5 ones are a full fledged computer that computes a lot more data - trip meter, max speed, current speed, wheel rpm, average speed at the minimum and then temperature, calories, etc. etc.

Anyway, phone will only serve as an option on a few occasions when you don't have a cycle computer.

A $300 cycle computer may provide some extra functionality compared to free smartphone apps. And cheap cycle computers can be put on the handle bar without much worry.

I never checked on DX offers. If they have cheap ones that work well, and provide HR & cadence monitors, those would be a really good option. I use a Sigma wired cycle comp, with Cadence sensor, & no HR sensor... with 2 bike support. I think it was for ~Rs2.5K. A tad expensive, IMO. Should have looked at DX. :)
