Just finished reading my first Kindle eBook - Hell on Two Wheels. This
book by Amy Snyder follows the RAAM 2009 journey of few male and
female solo riders. After hearing Samim's experiences at RAAM 2011, I
felt a need to understand what a person has to go through to ride 3000
miles in extreme climates and little sleep. The book follows Jure
Robic, Dani Wyss, Gerhard Gulewicz, Marko Baloh, Christopher Gottwald,
Kevin Kaiser, Jim Rees, Ben Popp, Tony O'Keefe, Christoph Strasser,
Daniela Genovesi, Janet Christiansen and Michele Santilhano. The
author has provided some pre ride history of the riders, followed
their 2009 race and then followed up with the riders few months post
the race completion. She touches upon the medical conditions which the
riders face - physical as well as psychological. It is amazing to see
how large a role the crew plays in the success or failure of the
rider. In 2009 Robic DNF'd due to one hour of penalties and subsequent
protest against RAAM officials. Of the one hour of penalties, 45
minutes was due to crew error.
In summary, Hell on Two Wheels is a great read with some lessons for
the budding long distance cyclists among us. Recommend the book to
all. Enjoy!
