Duration For 3 years
Bike :Trek4300
1. Total distance covered: ~26000km
2. Chain,Crank,Cassette replacement Once:Rs 5400
3. Tires: No changed
4. Tubes: No Changed
5. Serviced a few times: Totally about ~2,000
6. Brake Shoe :Rs 1500
my 26000Km includes my office commute of 24Km/day * 5 a week,my long
rides.
As a cost of ride Rs 0.34,with time saved which cannot be valued.
Raghu
I have done 2500 Km on my Merida crossway 10V. I use it for dropping
my kid to school bus stop in the morning these days. I have got one
puncture so far, that was in a BBCh off road race (Sarjapura road,
behind Decathlon, due to thorns). I fixed myself and touch wood.
However, I had always re-iterated that saving on fuel is never going
to motivate anyone to go for cycling. For me,
- The most important factor is the saving in commute time. My average
speed in city is about 20Kmph (above 25Kmph on weekends to tennis or
badminton or any other errants). I cannot imagine that in any other
mode of commute in Bangalore city.
- Second most important factor is of course the health benefits.
- Third most important factor is the predictability of time. Car may
be quicker on a good day. But you can never rely on a car if you want
to do a sharp cut in time. On bicycles, you can predict so well when
you are going to be at your destination.
On the contrary, my roadbike, used only for brevet (from 600K onwards)
and BBCh road races, has got 3 pairs of tires (2500 Km again in about
10 months) and I'm not happy with the condition of any of them. It is
expensive. I agree that I had been unlucky with the bad cuts in tires.
But the point is that it is so unreliable as commute. I cannot roll
through the bad patches, jump on the bad potholes and hop onto foot
path for a quick raze. So, it is totally illogical to use a road bike
for commute, unless you really want to take advantage of the
lightweight of the bike.

But I like this thread and eager to see the best calculation one can
get.

My total cost including bikes, service, upgrades, accessories and apparel is close to 2lakh inr for around 8k kms. So 25 rupees per km I guess. I've not kept track of operational costs..
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy on Android
Cost of owning any item is calculated as:
depreciation + recurring cost such as fuel (motorized vehicles),
maintenance, parts replacements, etc.
We can also add an interest (at a nominal rate such as that of an
fixed deposit) to the cost as we know that we would have fetched that
interest if we have not spent on the item or we know we would have pay
that interest if I had borrowed money to buy the item.
We never add the cost of the item as such because we know that at the
time of selling the item, we recover "cost - depreciation".
Assuming that we don't sell our bikes, they would last a good 20 years
or 80,000 Km, well probably with a few changes every 10,000Km or
15,000 Km. Assuming I'm going to junk my hybrid (price ~20K) after 20
years, the cost per year is 1K (depreciation).
Assuming I ride 4000 Km per year. Spend about 300 for every 3000 Km on
brake pads, spend about 1.5K for every 10,000 Km on tires/tubes and
1.5K for every 15,000 Km on chain/crank/cassette and probably 200 Rs
on cables for every 15,000 Km.
Now, distance per year = 4000 Km.
Cost of ownership per Km =
(300 / 3000 in brake pads)
+ (1500 /10000 in tires/
tubes)
+ (1500 / 15000 in on chain/
crank/cassette)
+ (200 / 15000 on cables)
+ (1000 / 4000 as
depreciation)
= Rs. 0.61 per Km.
Price will come down considerably if we consider a hybrid of around
Rs. 10K.

Taking Depreciation, and Future replacement of some parts and
Conservatively just 3000 Km /year : 0.58 Rs/km
Breakup:
Initial Purchase price 6000 Rs, Full Mudguards, Rack and DIY Laptop
Carrier 1000 Rs: Assuming life of only 7 years and Zero resale value:
1 K /Year : .33 Rs/Km
Assuming Change of Tyres and Chain Once : Budgeting 3500 Rs : .09/Km
Running cost as before: 0.16/Km
And totally agree with Opendro on the Road Bike tyre/tube issue--I
have also seen too many punctures and spoilt tubes on my Btwin Sport1
road bike despite proper inflation, and tyre being is decent
condition. Wet conditions seem to aggravate it, I have got more
punctures riding in the rain on it than on dry days--last weekend got
3 punctures on the same route that Chiddu and I had done the week
before with both of us on the Sport 1's and not a single puncture on
the full 130 Km ride.

A car costs 3-5/km, on an avg, on insurance, maint, tyres, battery, oil changes and svc costs. So 6000 kms would be that much *apart* from fuel :)

Amount of reduced car usage would be about at least 6000km, would translate to about 21K.

Vasu - no straight answer for this one mate. Higher end bikes, MTBs
low running costs and vice versa. Depends on the terrain and
maintainence also of the rider. From the discussions above, looks like
about 0.34. I have had almost ZERO expenses on my MTB. Do almost
everything myself, just replaced Brake pads so far. Used it for more
than 4K kms. 7.1 used for about 2K, ZERO maintainence. Been changing
bikes so havent reached a point where I have felt the need to change
tires, tubes or chains etc.
