Folks,

What is the cost of riding a bicycle* in Bangalore per km?

*Yes I know an Atlas Goldline Super will cost lesser so please do not try to be a smart alec.

Recently I did the following calculation:

My office commute = ~30km/day.
Mon - Fri = ~150 km.

For road bike:
New chain = 1800 INR
New tyres = 2000 INR / tyre. = 4000 INR/set.
New tubes = 300 INR / tube = 600 INR/set.

Total = 1800 + 4000 + 600 = 6400 INR.

A chain usually lasts for about 5000 km. Tyre might also last the same distance. Tube may be .. may be not.. (we'll assume it will).

This means 6400 / 5000 = ~ 1 rupee 30 paise per km (with one set of tubes only) only for my mon - fri office commute and nothing else.

Add the cost of frame + lubes for chain + components + upgrades + accidental damage + maintenance + wear and tear of parts + carbon + ... and the cost would be easily 4+ INR per km for a road bike.

I am wondering if any of you have done a similar calculation and if yes, if you can share the numbers please.

Thanks
Vasu.

For office commute i use Fire fox road runner (hybrid).....(hope you don't consider this as Atlas Goldline....!!!!!)

New chain = 500 INR
New tyres = 750 INR / tyre. = 1500 INR/set.
New tubes =200 INR / tube =   400 INR/set.

Total = 500 + 1500 + 400 = 2400 INR.

All the above is lasted for 7000 kms that makes it 0.34 paise per km (for all other wear and tear another 0.06p/km). 0.40p/km.

Where majority of the people in this country drive Maruti 800/Alto not Jaguar/Ducati!!!!!

very truly,

Hmm.. okay, back-of-the envelope calculation; I haven't done much riding on my roadbike yet, so these are for my MTB:

1. Total distance covered: ~4000 km
2. Chain replacement: None yet
3. Tires: Changed both tires once, for about Rs 1,500
4. Tubes: Changed thrice: ~Rs 500
5. Pedal replacement: ~Rs 500
5. Serviced a few times: Totally about ~1,000

I have spent ~Rs 3,500 to ride 4000 km, so it comes to nearly 90 p / km.

Of course, this number goes up to ~Rs 1.3 per km if I include what I have paid for non-essential accessories (bar ends, odometers, etc).

All the while i was looking for this calculation cost of ride.
here goes my calculation

Duration For 3 years

Bike :Trek4300

1. Total distance covered: ~26000km
2. Chain,Crank,Cassette replacement Once:Rs 5400
3. Tires: No changed
4. Tubes: No Changed
5. Serviced a few times: Totally about ~2,000
6. Brake Shoe :Rs 1500

my 26000Km includes my office commute of 24Km/day * 5 a week,my long
rides.
As a cost of ride Rs 0.34,with time saved which cannot be valued.

Calculate approx calories burnt and alternate cost of having to do the same vide any other mode like a gym to keep fit... The cost may actually become negative... Which is a positive carbon contribution

I agree with Anil. We cannot use a road bike for commute and calculate
the cost per km. Use a hybrid or MTB and the cost per km will be
literally zero. Let me emphasize ZERO. Unlike other vehicles, we don't
need to service our bikes in a mechanical shop. We can do ourselves.
It takes so little effort. I don't buy the chain lube or blah blah. I
use the regular 2T oil or some engine or gear oil which I have got for
my car/motorbike.

I have done 2500 Km on my Merida crossway 10V. I use it for dropping
my kid to school bus stop in the morning these days. I have got one
puncture so far, that was in a BBCh off road race (Sarjapura road,
behind Decathlon, due to thorns). I fixed myself and touch wood.

However, I had always re-iterated that saving on fuel is never going
to motivate anyone to go for cycling. For me,
- The most important factor is the saving in commute time. My average
speed in city is about 20Kmph (above 25Kmph on weekends to tennis or
badminton or any other errants). I cannot imagine that in any other
mode of commute in Bangalore city.
- Second most important factor is of course the health benefits.
- Third most important factor is the predictability of time. Car may
be quicker on a good day. But you can never rely on a car if you want
to do a sharp cut in time. On bicycles, you can predict so well when
you are going to be at your destination.

On the contrary, my roadbike, used only for brevet (from 600K onwards)
and BBCh road races, has got 3 pairs of tires (2500 Km again in about
10 months) and I'm not happy with the condition of any of them. It is
expensive. I agree that I had been unlucky with the bad cuts in tires.
But the point is that it is so unreliable as commute. I cannot roll
through the bad patches, jump on the bad potholes and hop onto foot
path for a quick raze. So, it is totally illogical to use a road bike
for commute, unless you really want to take advantage of the
lightweight of the bike.

To calculate the cost of riding a bike, we need to take several things
to account. The cost of the bike, maintenance cost, spare parts,
accessories, upgrades, and so on. So, here is a simple math:
Cost of bike + all other costs involved / the miles (or kms) covered.
Let’s put this as ‘x’.
Now, we need the time duration since the purchase of the bike. So, x
multiplied by the number of days and the divide it by your age. You
will arrive at ‘y’. Now ‘y’ may seem to be a bit off because we
haven’t counted the enjoyment and pleasure of riding. So, let’s put
this way: the cost of riding a bike is less than whatever you can
think off :-)
At least we bikers shouldn’t worry about the cost of biking. For sure
its way down in the pyramid of transportation cost (other than
walking)
Reminds me of a poster I saw at Bangalore Central the other day:
https://picasaweb.google.com/112527030415652900513/11191102?authkey=Gv1sRgCO7izf-CzdjUpwE#5676739720687312530

But I like this thread and eager to see the best calculation one can
get.

My total cost including bikes, service, upgrades, accessories and apparel is close to 2lakh inr for around 8k kms. So 25 rupees per km I guess. I've not kept track of operational costs..

Guys,

How about just saying Rs. ___ / km and leaving the rest to the reader to do his or her own analysis?

Road bike is illogical to use to commute - ok.
MTB better - ok.
.                - ok.
.                - ok.
.                - ok.
.                - ok.

Whatever anyone says - ok.

I am interested in the Rs. ___ / km number. If y'all can kindly stick to that it would help me believe that not all threads on BBC get derailed.

Thanks
Vasu.

LOL.

Cost of owning any item is calculated as:

depreciation + recurring cost such as fuel (motorized vehicles),
maintenance, parts replacements, etc.

We can also add an interest (at a nominal rate such as that of an
fixed deposit) to the cost as we know that we would have fetched that
interest if we have not spent on the item or we know we would have pay
that interest if I had borrowed money to buy the item.

We never add the cost of the item as such because we know that at the
time of selling the item, we recover "cost - depreciation".

Assuming that we don't sell our bikes, they would last a good 20 years
or 80,000 Km, well probably with a few changes every 10,000Km or
15,000 Km. Assuming I'm going to junk my hybrid (price ~20K) after 20
years, the cost per year is 1K (depreciation).

Assuming I ride 4000 Km per year. Spend about 300 for every 3000 Km on
brake pads, spend about 1.5K for every 10,000 Km on tires/tubes and
1.5K for every 15,000 Km on chain/crank/cassette and probably 200 Rs
on cables for every 15,000 Km.

Now, distance per year = 4000 Km.

Cost of ownership per Km =
(300 / 3000 in brake pads)
+ (1500 /10000 in tires/
tubes)
+ (1500 / 15000 in on chain/
crank/cassette)
+ (200 / 15000 on cables)
+ (1000 / 4000 as
depreciation)
= Rs. 0.61 per Km.

Price will come down considerably if we consider a hybrid of around
Rs. 10K.

Sorry Vasu for the derailment. I had now done a proper calculation for
my hybrid Merida Crossway 10V, which I bought for 19.5K last December
as a bakra, which is now 16.5K :( I had even calculated as a proper
business person would calculate. It is quite low. Please take a look.

Hi
I purchased an MTB for Rs 20000/- in 2008 Jul. I have spent about Rs
8000/- so far on its repairs. New Tyres once, four replacements of
tyres, front crank once, fork once. Now I need to replace its gearset
and chain maybe so another Rs 2000/-. So that makes it Rs 10000/- on
repairs. I may get Rs 10000/- if I sell the bike. So my total cost
including depreciation is about Rs 20000/-. I have done about 10000km
on it including Manali-Rohtang-Keylong, Dehradun-Mussorie-Dhanaulti,
two tour of Nilgiris. So my effective cost is about Rs 2 per km.
regards
YVR

I actually do a much simpler calculation of the savings -

17 grand for not using office transport
3 grand having sold my motorbike - hardly any motor usage

20K around every year (some similar figure for last 9 years in Bangalore - a cool 1.2L around easily assuming lesser saving earlier - all my bikes are free + some savings!!! :))

As per the costs - most of my expenses are due to bad maintenance which is now changing as I learn how to care for the bike better! :)

I have had to change the following for my Merida Sub 10

Chain - 600 /- not a very high end chain
Freewheel - 600 /-  (I can't remember the exact number)
Both tires and tubes - 2000 /- (in all I think)
Total 3200
Miscellaneous expenses - 800/- let's say
So 4 grand in all of 3+ years I think  (got it from Venky's chamrajpet shop in mid of 2008 from Naveen around)

Now the bike might need a change of chain again - the shox are frozen - another 3K of expense I guess.

Trek 7100 - spent a lot on tires till I got tire liners in place worth 800 bucks in place.

Merida TFS 400 - 0 expense since I got the bike (may end this year) (not including 2 bucks for air at petrol bunk would amount to less than 100).

Cost of the bikes - 14K + 20K + 40K   = 74K + accessories approx 80K  sold 7100 for 12.5K can be assumed to nullify the expenses on the bikes or some accessories.

All looks good! :)

Haven't tried renting out bikes give out like 10 times at 500 a day 5 grand spending 500 on servicing at least 4 times = 3K - not sure it works.

Road bikes next year starting next year! :D

Commute Bike ACT 105
Actual cost for 2 years, 7000 Km --Running cost so far: Rs .16/ Km
Breakup:
Changed 2 Tubes, Brake pads - 750
Grip Shifter Grip part fixed once- 300 Rs
Puncture fixes at puncture shop etc(Dont carry patch kit on commute,
No quick release) - 100 Rs

Taking Depreciation, and Future replacement of some parts and
Conservatively just 3000 Km /year : 0.58 Rs/km
Breakup:
Initial Purchase price 6000 Rs, Full Mudguards, Rack and DIY Laptop
Carrier 1000 Rs: Assuming life of only 7 years and Zero resale value:
1 K /Year : .33 Rs/Km
Assuming Change of Tyres and Chain Once : Budgeting 3500 Rs : .09/Km
Running cost as before: 0.16/Km

And totally agree with Opendro on the Road Bike tyre/tube issue--I
have also seen too many punctures and spoilt tubes on my Btwin Sport1
road bike despite proper inflation, and tyre being is decent
condition. Wet conditions seem to aggravate it, I have got more
punctures riding in the rain on it than on dry days--last weekend got
3 punctures on the same route that Chiddu and I had done the week
before with both of us on the Sport 1's and not a single puncture on
the full 130 Km ride.

I must have cycled about 20k (conservatively) after buying the 1st triban trail.( a*high* end bike?) on my TT, Merida 510 and Dahon. Total cost of cycles and spares = 52k.

Cycles are still in use and I expect utility for some time. The Merida and Dahon are recent acquisitions. The TT cost me 13K including repairs/maintenance and I must have done 16k in it. Probably worth it just in terms of cost per km.

Amount of reduced car usage would be about at least 6000km, would translate to about 21K. I do save a bit of money on outstation trips where I lug my foldie along. I travelled 72km in a day in Hyd which would translate to at least Rs 600 in Hyd and another Rs300 in Bangalore. Another  couple of trips to Chennai and Mumbai ,again probably ended up saving another Rs 500. About 20 trips and the foldie probably pays for itself in terms of convenience and cost.

A car costs 3-5/km, on an avg, on insurance, maint, tyres, battery, oil changes and svc costs. So 6000 kms would be that much *apart* from fuel :)

I think Vasu is looking at cost of RIDING a bicycle and NOT cost of
OWNING a bicycle. Ownership costs would include interest, depreciation
etc etc. I think riding is just the spares consumed in riding the
bikes.

Vasu - no straight answer for this one mate. Higher end bikes, MTBs
low running costs and vice versa. Depends on the terrain and
maintainence also of the rider. From the discussions above, looks like
about 0.34. I have had almost ZERO expenses on my MTB. Do almost
everything myself, just replaced Brake pads so far. Used it for more
than 4K kms. 7.1 used for about 2K, ZERO maintainence. Been changing
bikes so havent reached a point where I have felt the need to change
tires, tubes or chains etc.
