Hi all,

I got myself an MTB (a Merida Matt Sub 20 MD) last week. This morning,
I noticed a metallic whine / hum when I ride the bike. I am having a
tough time locating the precise source of the noise, but here are some
symptoms:

1. I get this noise whenever I ride. The noise seems to be from
somewhere near the front wheel, but occasionally seems to "spread" to
somewhere under my saddle / rear dérailleur. I feel a slight
resistance from my front wheel.

2. I get the noise both while pedalling and coasting.

3. If I get off the bike, lift either of the wheels and rotate it, I
don't get any noise. Neither wheel shows any wobble.

4. If I get off the bike and push it, I don't get any noise.

5. I get the noise irrespective of whether the front suspension is
locked out or not.

The only difference between #2 and #4 above is my weight on the bike.
I suppose the ball bearings should be fine on a new bike. What could
this be? Is there anything I can do to make this go away? Is this part
of the normal wear and tear that I should expect in any new bike until
the first tune up? Would appreciate any feedback.

thanks,
Ashwatha.

I also have the same bike dude < HI5 > :)

I strongly feel this noise is heard at high speeds. And I suppose, as
mine, your bike has also come with 2 reflectors attached to each
wheel right ? these reflectors are fixed to single spoke. Hence, they
tend to vibrate at high speeds producing this noise. Even I had
experienced this for the first few days with my bike.

And also the other difference between #2 and #4 is the speed. YOu cant
push your cycle and run with it at 30 kmph. Can you ? :P

Try tightening those reflectors by the screw and as well pull them
towards the rim so that they get locked between the spokes. THat
should almost nullify the noise which you are experiencing.

Happy noise-free ride,

A metallic whine, a humming noise, as if something is resonating ?
Comes somewhere from the front and at very high speeds can be felt at
the handle bars. Loud enough for fellow riders to hear it if you are
on Nandi descent.
Tyre noise is different. If it were the reflectors it should come from
the rear as well.
Dunno the cause or solution. Never bothered too much. At least now I
know it's not just my bike ; )

@Sagar: Thanks for the info - I tried removing the reflectors
entirely, but still get the noise.

@deepak: Doesn't sound like the humming of the tires. This is a more
metallic whine and sounds very different, and much louder.

@Ananth: Yes, that's exactly what I am noticing.

thanks,
Ashwatha.

presuming all your bikes are disc brake one,i think its got to be the discs in question, more than the technical issue, its rather unpleasant to the ears..

Hi Sriram,

thanks for the tip - I played around with the disc brake, but couldn't
make the noise go away. Anyway, the bike is due for its first tune up
next week, I will have this looked at.

thanks,
Ashwatha.

Hi Badri,

doesn't sound like the noise that you would expect from a seat post,
but you may have a point, particularly because the noise
reduces/almost goes away when I stand and pedal.

thanks,
Ashwatha.
