"On Sunday evening, advocate and activist B N Jagadeesh was cycling on
Millers Road near the Aiyappa temple when a group of five men stopped
him. Jagadeesh was wearing a sleeveless t-shirt and according to him,
that is what enraged the men.
“They asked me in Kannada what I am wearing and started shouting
obscenities. When I replied in Kannada, they realized I am a localite.
I called the police and the men fled,” said Jagadeesh. He has filed an
FIR at High Grounds police station. The locals told him these goons
regularly indulge in such behaviour around the area. "

Next CM - or maybe even an "extraordinary" CM - in that area ?
Dress code - sleeveless tees ?
This is irritating, scary and as a city/society we're just letting the lumpens decide our lives.
I'm angry. Want to throw a stone at something.

My feeling is dress code of this kind could only incite such goons more.. and make them vent their anger on a lone biker some other day.

Of course irritating, and a bit more scary for people who do not know kannada !
Something needs to be done for this. City is getting rowdier.. :(

These goons are jobless people, and Since they are born and brought up in Bangalore. They use the Language as a weapon on outsiders and beat them.

My request to fellow bikers who don't know Kannada is, avoid such dangerous areas and also avoid arguing with them. TRY AND LEARN KANNADA. JAISA DES VAISA BHES........ so survival requires language skills also...

Don't think that since I am a Kannadiga, I forcing this. I understand that I am a Indian, but these goons does not have meaning for India. They are politically motivated by useless MUTALIKS....

Thanks

Let be sensible, as group noone will hurt us but there are lots of
bikers who travel alone and let ensure that we dont enrage these
elements that they pick individual bikers as tragets...

Let be careful..these events will discourage people to peddle than
encourage. Instead let use CM to make Police and other authority aware
we need protection!!!

Thats my point of view

Millers Road ? Dangerous ? We're just letting them claim more of whats ours.
I've been in Blore for 13 years now - outsider ?
Language - sure. My wife's learned it coz there was a need, I follow some but cannot speak because I've always been responded to in a comfortable means of communication whenever I've tried broken Kannada - that always showed to me the city's friendliness and multicultural mix (even before "IT" happened to it). That, and its coffee and its weather are its foundations.
Shall we let jobless goons take that space/positive environment away from us ?
I'm reasonably sure a lot many folks on this list feel/do more for Blore than some of these idiots. Being an "outsider" or not has no direct relevance on one's love for the city.
Mera desh, mera bhesh, and I'd rather not give that up without a fight.

Hey Guys, The situation is becoming hopeless! Law and order has completely failed. Shankar Bidari recently advised citizens to carry guns for self-protection. I hate guns, knives, or any other instrument of violence and do not like to or want to carry them. I am all for wearing sleeveless t-shirts and protesting. I am however not seeing this situation getting better.

Sorry for sounding so negative, but these things along with other things like poor infrastructure and BBMP (Bruhat Bangalore Marana Palike) is turning our lovely city into a hell-hole,
Yogesh.

It's nothing to do with genuine feelings of injustice (towards the local sons of the soil) but a sign that the Fascist Sangh Parivar are allowed to get out of hand. They need to be condemned and tendencies such as these confronted in the polls. Unfortunately, too many amongst us are apologists for these RSS types.

Other than the fact that one of the people assaulted was riding a
cycle, I see no reason why this thread belongs here. We can all have
lots of opinions on the prevailing law and order problem, but I am
sure there are people here who would rather like this discussion to be
held elsewhere.

Oh I'm really sorry to have offered any comments.
I thought the fact that a cyclists was assaulted is reason enough for the Cycling Groups to be concerned about the law and order situation but if the majority feel it best to be silent so be it.
Let's keep the discussion confined to the more important topics like "what brand of bike etc"

Hi,

'what brand of bike etc' is important to some people at sometime. I am sure you have asked yourself this same question at some point of time and I can also say that all of us here have asked ourselves this question, at least once. So, the importance or non-importance of this question is not the issue. Importance is only relative to time.

Law and Order in the city is important as well. We cannot ignore that either. As cyclists we are already thinking of silently protesting during this month's CM.

If any of the members of the group think they want to protest because a fellow cyclist was man-handled and they are cyclists themselves then they are requested to

a) write to the media, editors of newspapers, e-zines like Citizen Matters etc, Radio RJs (i am sure you can find email addresses/facebook profiles/twitter ids if you are motivated enough)

b) write to the police, or go meet them and express your concerns.

c) meet the minister of state for law and order

d) wear t-shirts with slogans or put slogan on your bike/car/motorbike etc and ride them.

e) come ride the CM this month and use flyers to let the junta know of your protest.

But please spare this emailing list. Some of us bikers in the group are already feeling sad that the discussions in the list frequently deviate from biking topics. Unlike other places, this list is not moderated so we need to be conscious of what we send to all.

Please close this thread here and take up your concern with people who matter and have the power to do something about it.

Thanks,
-vasu

Hi all,

I dont think the word 'GUN' was used in the addressal by Mr. Bidadi.
The resolution to this problem is to keep your calm as far as possible and if some one gets physical give it back to him.

Please abstain from using guns and knives since the place we live in could turn 'BLOODY'.

Please be careful.

Thanks!!

Moderation has been discussed hajaar times and is a painful thread by itself! :))

Mr Sujit Patwardhan has done a lot for biking - by working on changing infrastructure in Pune and Nanded - and the least of his concerns is brands! :) His concern for such state of affairs is obvious...

As for the topic - it is important for a person to know that he has to have extra caution simply coz he is wearing a sleeveless. We sure will make use of CM and any other means.

I think a subject line is here to help. I skip a lot of mails asking about biking parts coz they don't interest me! :) Simple as that. Bike parts might be ur love but not the condition of roads or trees... :) Not sure how many bikers went to the Madiwala lake meet where a biking lane is to be made! :)

Faiq's remark on smiling is again something that bikers could try (at least I will) - not sure how much it has to do with biking - well let's see - it flexes 16 muscles as against 37 (or watever) for a frown.

So let some things be and not dig up this topic again - we are better off  digging rides! :D This is not merely a mailing list - it's a community of bikers with varying tastes and interests. Let's try and keep it open - I am sure if some one really goes off board many bikers wud do the trashing and pretty creatively at that! :))

Thanks,
Mayank

"maintain some discipline"?? -- Safety also matters!. Its good to
highlight somethings that happen around us. I take millers road to
reach home daily, by bicycle. I leave office around 8 30 pm.
People's main concern is safety when you ask them to ride a bike. If
you make them aware of these things, I think one should appreciate. I
ride alone. Please take the good points, leave the rest. And most
importantly, please keep in mind, each biker is trying to help the
other biker. It shouldn't end with, "so what?"

while i hate to lengthen this already pointlessly long thread, i feel that i inevitably have to.

The simple no-data-loss-due-to-compression summary of this entire thread is:

A cyclist got chased down / beaten up.... 'excuse' that irked was a sleeveless t-shirt....  And in response, solution was... SMILE, instead of stare. (I know  it works. Has always for me).... Also, raise awareness in CMs etc (I dunno how wearing sleeveless will solve anythin though)....

But, after this much is said, hyper-ventilating about the city and the infrastructure and the autowallas are a normal flow of thought for many, but plz spare the rest of the group, the trouble of hunting any useful content in a long thread. i.e. don't turn threads into "we all hate xyz" threads

Regards,
Sudhir

p.s: i don't see him being treated any different if he were on a motorbike, so technically its not just a cyclist's issue, as far as i understand the situation.

hey
safety does matter weather you r on a bike or not....
so when we r on the look out for anything dangerous all day... y not
when on the bike...
there is nearly 0% chances that the same thing might happen...
Bangalore is a huge city.... it can be unsafe to ride alone... but for
that we cannot arrange a peloton every time we get out on our bike....
jus hav to be on the look out thts all...
with our helmets n fancy bikes we do look like clowns for a layman's
eye n its natural for him to pass comments...
smile is the answer not frown n neither is wearing sleeveless tops as
a mark of protest(against what.????)....
its not the "so what" being put up here... its "why"
fell free to discuss safety issues while coming down NANDI @ 50+kmph
not all this....
