Sad that such a thing has happened in spite of there being very high
levels of safety precautions taken.

It's terribly sad and its not much but at least he died doing something he enjoyed.

RIP
It's a pretty safe sport going by statistics but notice the jump in
numbers in 2000's here

It is very sad indeed. Even sad considering that he was on his way to become a dad.

Also, Leopard Trek were hoping to have a great season with both schlek brothers riding for them now.

This is really sad. He had a fracture in the front of his skull. Isnt the helmet supposed to prevent that ?
Sometimes i too feel, the helmet although should be light weight, doesnt really give lot of confidence. I bought one from Decatlon for 1000 bucks. It just fell from my stationary bike and got broken on the side. Not really sure of the protection though.

If you see the close-up photo ... helmet buckled.
It could be because of helmet was not fastened correctly covering frontal lobe or helmet given way during first hit and then frontal lobe crashed. I wish second one could be true!

The helmets are designed to take the impact and crash and buffering the head from impact. No need to panic if the helmet breaks from an easy fall. In my understanding, they are designed to break easily. We need to replace them.

The rider here was riding downhill and in a race that would mean close to 80-100 kmph. When crashing at those speeds its but inevitable to expect injuries. Unfortunately fatal in this case. I read somewhere that he succumbed to facial injuries. Mostly likely crashing face first into the road. May he RIP.

Atul, your helmet needed a helmet!

After clipping the wall at 80km/h, he was airborne and crashed on the
ground face first and died within no time. His fault was to look back
over his right shoulder for his teammates....

The more easily it buckles, the better the protection. It's simple physics. If it's rigid and strong, it'll transfer all the impact to your skull. If it's soft and breaks easily, it'll absorb the impact. Similar idea to crumple zones in cars. You're better off in a Nano than an Amby for the same reason, even though the Amby is stronger.
