Hi,

I use a Hercules Thriller (no gears) for commuting to work daily. I have zero knowledge of bicycle gears, but wanted to have the experience of riding a geared bike for a while.

Is it possible to fit any bicycle with gears? My Hercules Thriller, for example? (This might be a dumb question). Or do I need to buy a specialized geared bike?

If it is possible to fit gears on any bike, around how much would it cost? Are there any recommendations on how I should go about it?

Any feedback is appreciated.

thanks,
  Ashwatha.

It's eminently possible. Just take it to your favourite mechanic - who'll be able to do it for you !

I'm not sure about the cost, but it should be around a thousand rupees for the basic necessities I think.

If you settle for back deralieur only, it should cost you about Rs 750
including shimano gears, cassette etc... Try locating a BSA
"Cyclinic".
Replacing the chain wheel (front) will cost you more and is a more
delicate operation... i remember the mechanic ruined my BSA Mach frame
while fitting the chain wheel - he took a hammer to the frame and made
a hash of it.

the hammer is the swiss knife of most bike mechanics here :)
Just an observation. Nothing constructive :)

The hammer is needed many a time, I've noticed. New equipment mysteriously ships with damage of some sort or the other. Why I'm not very sure! My most likely guess is the low quality of components, combined with damage during shipment.

All said, there is still such a thing as a judicious use of a hammer :-) So make sure you choose the right mechanic :-)
