Hey all,
This is inspired by a post by Nitesh Neela on Cyclop. Just out of curiosity, I mapped the same ride on Strava (https://www.strava.com/activities/239994558 ) and Endomondo (https://www.endomondo.com/workouts/457592323/19661201) - the way I did this was to export the GPX file from Strava to Endomondo.

Endomondo Calorie count for same ride - 1035 Calories for 33.8kms.
Strava Calorie count for same ride - 492 Calories

So, first question - why does this difference exist? How do they estimate calories?

P.S: The second question that occurred to me was - do I have too much time on my hands to have done the above experiment? :)

Gandharv,

Silly question maybe, but have you set up your age and weight on both sites and are the values same in both places?

Dear Prashanth,
absolutely the same. These results are also true for a few others!

Thanks.

Bloody hell,

I was all wrong all along. Till date I was just cycling out of the rush for it - pure, unadulterated, high octane rush. And sometimes, when I am on the regular bike, a romantic feeling of being back in world that is slow, laid back and smooth to roll into.

By the way I think that the shortest exercise which can burn the most of calories is sex.

Regards,
Gourav

400 calories for 30 kms at a decent pace sounds more correct. 1000 is absurd.

Of course neither are measured in an accurate manner.

AFAIK endomondo does not use elevation data, only speed and distance. Strava probably uses some internal elevation model.

Calories burnt are estimated based on historical data from accurate experiments based on parameters like type of exercise, age, gender, mass, elevation gain, pace, etc.

The only way to accurately measure calories burnt is by measuring the amount of oxygen inhaled and exhaled.

Do you guys think using a heart rate monitor gives the accurate numbers?

Strava is fairly accurate or in the trend!

Sometimes when you judge self performance accuracy takes a back seat and predictabilty is important....what i mean the equipment and software should show the right trends..so that you can see if you improve or not.
