Guys,

As usual on weekends i do my regular short rides (200 kms....).  I was inspired by Vasu, for a change i started late (started at 8 am and returned by 4.45 pm....otherwise the regular timing would be at 5 am....).  I ended up riding in the heat all the time. Yesterday it was too much of heat (38 degree, 42 % humidity....in tarmac may be even worst......).

After 1 pm i felt too much of burning sensation in the eyes.  once a while not able to see at all need to close the eyes and when i do that not able to open it at all.  Sensation was like me putting salt water to eyes.

What this means, why did i experience this, how can i avoid it and is it an indication of dehydration?  I don't think i experienced dehydration, (took enough fluids....no head ache in the evening....not tired also....i left for the work at regular timing today morning at 8 am, feeling perfectly alright......)

very truly,

Anil,

Did you wear Sunglasses? If yes which one? I know you wear spectacles but want to know if you were using sunglasses. Using them would have helped in the hot climate.

Agreed it is a big frame.. In that case why dont you opt for a day and night lenses which can be fixed for your present frame?

It really works out well..

That is the reason know? Why don't you try Btwin SG800 Optic sunglasses which comes with correction lenses option?

I am using one since last one year and i am sure many of us here are too using it.

Give it a try mate

I guess it could be due to sweat. If you dont wipe sweat on forehead, it might go into eyes and cause burning sensation.

anil shift your attention on to your eyebrows you can feel a tingling just wipe it

alternatively wipe your eyebrows periodically to remove the sweat there

I think sweat is the most obvious culprit. I hesitated a bit before
posting.. someone as seasoned as Anil would probably know this.. :)

Using a buff reduces amount of perspiration flowing down your face..

Start time: 8am
End time: 4.45pm
Riding time: 8 hours 45 mins.

All conditions remaining same:

Start time_regular: 5am
End time should be: 1.45pm.
To maintain the same riding time of 8 hours 45 mins.

This means from 1.45 pm - 4.45pm = 3 hours you were outside of your regular routine.

You are trying to say that you got burning sensation in eyes due to those 3 extra hours?

If you are outdoors, though not necessarily on a bike ride, during that time would you still get that sensation?

Are you saying that the burning sensation for those 3 hours was due to bicycling?

Vasu,

I don't blame my starting time for it.

I got the point you raised. It can't be for that reason.

In fact a month back, I was also riding till up to 5 pm (blr-msr-blr). May be yesterday heat was too much and the humidity factor.

When you are the edge, 3 hours can be a big time, it can make a huge difference.

Guys,

Thank you all for your suggestions, looks like it is sweating coming into eyes.

Will see how it goes next time.

i have faced less drastic but similar versions of this. And i'm sure this is due to sweat as ravi says. Wash your face with fresh water when this happens, or at least wet your eyes and wipe it. If you wipe without wetting, you risk causing some burning sensation due to dried up salt crystals being dragged while wiping. Of course, this is after the problem starts. Before that, wiping off sweat often around the brow itself makes a huge difference.  And if you sweat like i do, it becomes too irritating to do that often! A buff makes the wiping frequency much lower.

Some folks wear a bandana to avoid sweat reaching the eyes. IMO, intensity of the burning sensation is higher if sunscreen is used...
