@ Pradeep, can please give some inputs on the route map?

also other experienced folks, please let me know your experiences with Dos and Donts of the ride you had to OOTY.

Thank you.

This is my blog post about our Ooty ride of last year. I want to do it again this year, probably in august.

which route are you taking gudlur or kalhatty climb..?

For kalhatty climb:
Ride first 200 kms and halt at gudalpet. Or halt at masanagudi if you feel strong.

Start at 6 in the morning from gudalpet and reach masanagudi for short break.

All the above is only possible if madumalai forest guards allow you to cycle. I heard they are not allowing cyclists. Looks like we were the last bunch.

If they allow, never stop or slow down in the forest stretch.

If they don't allow. Carpool till masanagudi and start the climb. Or if NY other route .I don't know.

Gudlur climb:

Be prepared fr the never ending ride. Its a steep 50kms climb from gudlur and you need to start early in the morning.

Stay at gudlur to start fresh early morning.

Gudlur is more scenic and kalhatty is lot tougher.

Continuous climb for 32km till TR bazaar. From there you do get rolling terrain till ooty. With some manageable climbs in between.
No signs of food till naduvattam (25km-3-4 hr climb for a moderate rider)
Hence plan accordingly

Also I would say going in a car with at least 3 riders works out economical than taking a bus and risking the scratches plus inconvenience of timing.

Pradeep,

Thank you, please tell me a route which is easier i.e with less climbs.

I thought of planning my ride using this route:

Bangalore => Mysore => Nanjangud => Gundalpet => Bandipur National Par=> Masinagundi => OOty

Rough plan :

Leave Bangalore at 4:00 A.M.
Reach Mysore at : 11: A.M.
Reach NanjanGud: 1:00 P.M
Reach Gudalpet => 4 P.M
Reach Bandipur National Park => 6 or 7 P.M. ( call off for the day with rest in some hotel or resort)
Day 2
Start from Bandipur National Park at 5:00 A.M.
Reach OOTY by 2:00 P.M.

Take rest and roam in OOTY,

Leave OOTY in the night and reach bangalore early monday morning.

First you confirm if they allow you to cycle in madumalai forest

1) They don't allow you to cycle inside the forest
2) Masinagudi - ooty is the shorter climb for sure, but it is steeper than the gudalur ooty climb.

The road from Gudalur to Ooty is horrible....you will feel that terrible when you descend!

The TN govt has not maintained and made the route to the most hyped up hill hub..pathetic!

I cried in my descent......traffic incorriglble.....full of broken stretches and thick stupid patches......
