Hi,

has anyone done a bike ride up Skanda Giri? Seems to be quite close to
Nandi: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skandagiri. It seems to be a
popular trekking place, but I couldn't find many references to biking
there.

I am thinking of riding there this weekend, but I am not sure if it is
suitable for biking - it will be great to hear from anyone who has
been there before.

thanks,
Ashwatha.

Hey Ashwatha,

I've been to Skandagiri only once so am not totally sure of this, but
I doubt there is a road that goes uphill. You can only go till the
base.

Although if there is a road then it'll be a fun spot to cycle :)

Hi,

Last week i went for skendagiri trekking. (not in bike).
There is no road in the hill to reach the top.
So uphill using bike is not possible to reach the top.

Still,
You can go with your bike and park it, you can climb the hill.

Thanks
prabhakar

no.. Its a trekking route up the hill..

But the surrounding areas are very beautiful for cycling.. Hilly terrain and a bit of dense tree cover. ( thats what I felt when we went on motor bikes and missed the turn and went ahead a lot more inside).. Hoping to ride there someday..

Cheers!!!!

good for downhilling if u r a hardcore mountain biker.... But, its risky cos u might bump into trekkers and might not be able to stop without incident... And u'll anyway have to lug ur bike all the way up the trails, even the die-hardest mtb-er wont probably be able to pedal it all the way uphill

@ Ashwatha, certainly you cant take your MTB to Skandagiri for biking.
Instead I would suggest you to try Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta after
Mysore and Gundlupet.
That hill is made for MTBs. Long back I visited there and the road is
hardly visible, thanks to the craters on the road.
So I think you can plan this one on your MTB.

Route: From Mysore, go further to Gundlupet (60kms from Mysore), from
Gundlupet, pedal for another 8-10 kms to reach Hangala village,
and you can see an arch welcoming you to HG Betta.

And yes, dont forget to take your camera. You'll some breath-taking
views once you reach the summit and en route.

Cheers!!

Hi All,
I am new to Bangalore. Got shifted recently. Just wanted to join the trip this weekend with you folks. As my bike is in Hyderabad, i would need a bike for rent. So will it be possible to lend someone's bike and the helmet.

Thanks In advance.

Hi all,

thanks for the info; I am by no means a hardcore MTBer - I was just
curious about Skanda Giri and how it compared to Nandi. Himavat
Gopalaswamy betta seems to be a good idea for a future ride. Thanks
for all the info.

thanks,
Ashwatha.

I have done this a few times..
It used to be a typical moon light trek as no water is available in
this place.. and you had to carry everything.
Of late, I see the locals set up a small shop on top of the hill
(there is an abandoned temple atop the hill and a few walls of what
would have been a fort.). Hence getting some maaggi and omlets should
not be a problem and i was told that you get water and cool drinks
too.. but nothing enroute. And all this provided you do this over a
weekend only.
The trek is moderate andwould take anything between 2 -3 hr. The best
thing to do is start late in the evening , have your dinner before the
climb ( you need to pack it for sure) and start the trek by 11 in the
night.
You would reach the summit by 2 max.. and you would spend the rest of
the darkness in the fog that is formed...
Be warned that the temperature dips rapidly and you need good warm
clothing to bear it. You may collect the wood on theway and have a
bonfire too.. if not joining with someone already on. The best view of
the whole place is the transformation from dark to sunlight and it can
be breathtaking. It has been experienced for me in different seasons.

The route to the place is not tough.. you may take the route to Nandi
and take right at the idli hotel ( we usually turn left to climb
Nandi).. Once you pass the Bhoga Nandishwara temple, keep looking for
an arch towards Muddenahalli , the birth place of Sir MV and once you
are there, the foot of Skandagiri is approx., a km.

Hope this helps.. enjoy your hiking

cheers,
badri

Hi,

I had been to Skandagiri twice. There is no road to climb. Even
climing with your foot is challenging there....

I dont think you will be able to climb skandagiri with Cycle......
