Let me share my experience...

I have started cycling before 2 week, at that time I was 80kg( height 5ft 6in ), daily am walk-up @early morning and gng to lalbagh( round-trip from my home is 20 KM ) and do walk/run there for 45 minute( 1 round of lalbagh lake ), for office commutation also using bicycle( round-trip 10KM ).. Not following any diet but keeping my self away from junk and fatty food..

In short keeping my self busy for 3hr daily and with this schedule have lost 2KG in 2 week so far..

Cycle hard, either increase your time or intensity. Once you lose a little bit of weight then run.

Jogging is not supposed to cause any knee pain. It is mostly because
of inflexible muscles you have around our knee.
Warm up before you jog, and strengthen your quads. Full squats and
supported squats half-way (chair pose) are good to start with.

More than that, get a control on your diet. Lighter dinners will get
you far and fast.
Consult a nutritionist if possible.

Hi Mahesh,
Running is generally more stressfull on the body especially for first timers and after a long break.
You could come to Decathlon Sarjapura and I will teach you some basic conditioning exercises specific for runners.

 Hi Mahesh,

I understand with running and cycling your goal is to loose weight. I would like to share few simple things that i did which gave me great results.

I am 5ft 7inch was 87 Kgs(in June 2011) and and can now say with a lot of gratitude that I lost 22 kgs in just under 6 months. and have been able to maintain it and today in am 25kgs less from where i started in last years June 2011. So of the things I did.

1. Baught a cycle and started cycling to office daily (~18) and few long rides on weekend. I did an average of 500kms+ per month.
2. regularized my diet. 3 good wholesome meals with fruits and nuts as snacks in between the meals.
3.With every meal got half full by salads and fruits. so I used to feel full the whole day.
4. Considerably cut down on fatty food, junk food and sweets.
5. I use to walk for 30 mins on treadmill for 3 days in a week ( I was not capable of running at all , could not even run for 500m then)
6. 30 mins walk in my apartment after dinner.
7. started day with as much water  as i could drink (lukewarm with lemon and no honey). And drank as much water i could thru the days.
8. had at least 3-4 green teas in the day mostly after any meals.
9. Stocked my office drawer and my laptop bag with some healty snacks(nuts, fruits and channa etc)
10. read a lot of aticles online got mostly all information and motivation form website like livestrong.
11. for first few weeks even tracked my calories and activities on livestrong. It helps a lot.
12. I found passion with cycling and it was no more a "TODO activity for weight loss" for me. A passion, so much so that i cycled to from Sarjapur to pondichery within 3 weeks for buying my cycle. I didn't had done a century by then. Now with all teh cycling experience and gyan  I think it should not be doen that way but sometime the instincts are so strong and they just win you over. It took me 33 year to be able to answer this question- what is you passion in life?
11. learned swimming at my apartment pool and do atht at least 3 days in a week.
12. with weight loss and stamina build by cycling and regularly walking and some swimming , i started training for running 2 months back and today  I feel confident to finish my 10k run (TCS 10k on 27th may) in under 60 mins.

Some of the thing here are very easy to do like dringking water or walking after dinner and i think if anyone picks a couple of them and make them a habbit then eventually it helps change the lifestyle. And one you stated seeing results you get self motivated and will pick up few more of these. Redaing again as i said giev a lot of motivation. I had spend a lot of item reading articles on nutrition, weightloss, cycling and motivation and inspiration. I owe a lot to livestrong.com. and this cycling group and few others in banaglore. THANK YOU!!!

Also as you start anything(like cycling or running) for weight loss just don't look into the benefits as weightloss. Off-course weight Loss would be the first benefit and you may get bigger benefits in life. You may fidn a PASSION. You may have new goals in life and you can be a different  person all together. It has happened for me. From being a couch potato, today I dream for running a marathon within 2013  and doing PBP 2015, and my life had definitively changed for the good  So go get your dream. Its not as difficult as we think it is.

And congratulations , you have already made a start!!!

I hope this helps you.

Regards,
Prashant

The way you put your feet down on the ground while jogging matters a lot. You should join the Nike run club where they conduct runs every weekend. Get some good tips and then you should be good. Watch for the joint pains post that you either correct your posture for running or see the doc.

Happy running.

Sincerely,
Manoj

Wow Prashant, that is a very inspiring story ...

In my case (5'10" weighing 84 kg a year ago), I did regular walking for about 4+ km every day since Feb 2011. I started running in Jan 12 and now can run a bit (though not much) ... I could never run before .... I managed to come down only to 80, but I feel much fitter. People I have seen after 6 months have all commented that I ve lost weight ... My waist came down from 36 to 34 .... but as u  can see, the weight reduction itself was not much ...

My line of thought is this - rather than try to reduce weight, I am trying to increase my fitness level. E.g. if you can walk for 1 km, try to walk for 2 km ... try increasing ur speed of walking .. Try to run a bit in that time ... if u get knees pain in running, I would suggest viewing the running technique video on running.about.com

I have now bought a cycle and have done a 65 km this sunday ... next target is to cross the 100 km mark.

So, that is my (different?) view point for you .. instead of just trying to reduce weight, try to increase fitness level :-) Calorie counting is stressful (at least for me), but I avoid junk and fatty foods ...

Cheers
Satya

Prashant has given you a right plan which he has done.

I too have lost weight of about 15 Kgs in 4 months from 90kg to 75. followed more or less same diet.

You have to cut down your fat intake like dosa, ice cream, chat, samosa, chcolates, junk food etc. You will have the tendancy but still have to cut down brings you a lot of difference.

And the regular work out morning and evening if possible. Such that you should sweat out. Should feel the hunger on right times.

All the best.

Regards,
Santosh

Hi Mahesh!

Cycling is the best form of exercise for an overweight person. Here is a story about someone who lost more than 150 kgs on  a cycle. Hope it inspires you as well http://www.diseaseproof.com/archives/cat-scott-cutshall.html.  I think more than the form of exercise it is going to be your commitment and belief that is going to matter more. Good Luck!

Prashant is a hero!!
and a role model..
only on a wrong (!) group!! cyclists are more or less fit ..
Tell this outside VLCC  centres!

BTW.. I think eating salads till you are half full is perhaps the most important doable part for anyone who does not want to go through the whole list.
Reduce calorie in.. maintain calorie burn or increase the burn.
