Hi All:
My rear rim got out of true while transporting the bike to Hyderabad. It is not visible to a casual observer, but the rim rubs against the brake pads. Is it possible to get the rim trued at a local bike shop, or will I need to replace the rim? Would be very helpful if someone knows a good place in the Gachibowli area of Hyderabad.

If you have the spoke wrench, it is very easy to true. Of course, I don't expect you to own a truing stand. I use the cycle itself as the stand. Keep it upside down. Pull the brake pad to one side, just to the level I think my rim should be. Start truing.... you just need to know which side of the spokes to adjust by feeling the tension on the spoke by fingers - i.e. either tighten on one side to pull or loosen on the other side to push. I agree that offset will not be 100% accurate without a truing stand. We don't need a 100% correct offset. And our rear wheels for geared hubs are not 0% offset anyway.

Beg to differ - truing is something that requires quite a bit of practice and typically should NOT be done as a DIY experiment if you are serious about your wheel(s)
Unless ofcourse you are ok with
- a untrue wheel
- a soon to be untrue wheel
- a wheel which is not dished
- a wheel which can snap a spoke or two the next time you hit a puny pothole
- etc
Even after battling quite a few wheels good bike mechs dont call wheel truing something easy :)
Wheel truing is like brain surgery - simple in theory. Not as simple in practice.

Well, the fact that Rohan said it, I am not going to argue. I leave
the conclusion to whoever has tried. I do everything on bike myself
and I am not a trained or experienced person. I still maintain that
bicycle is the simplest machine.
