Dear Friends,

One of my colleagues would like to go for Trek MTB. He is going to use it for Office communing and weekend rides. He is 6 feet height and weight is around 100Kgs.

He has shortlisted two bikes 'Trek Wahoo 29er' and ‘Trek 4300

Please let us know your thoughts and help us in selecting the right bike.

Thanks and Regards,

Over here, You might get replies asking you to consider many other bikes confusing you overall
or you might never get a reply ...confusing you again.

If the choice is anything between those 2 , he should visit Bots , ride both the bikes
( on a trainer if not allowed on road ) and then check his bank balance to decide which one.

Good luck.

For 6 feet tall guy, he should get the 29er :-D

I bought a 650B just before the race day (last Sunday). In the hindsight, I wish I had got a 29er as I could just fit in a 700C slick tire on it :-D But 29er for my height (5'6") is going to be too big to be used on the rough terrain.

Let me however warn you that 29er or 650B will have its issues of spares tubes/tires (if you are a guy who want to pick things just from any neighbourhood store). Currently, I just stuffed in 26 x 2.25 tubes as my tubes went beyond repair in the race (what a way to test ride a new bike / first day)! I cannot do the same for tires though I believe that the tires should do good for another 5 years if I use only for races (there are only 3 off road races in a year in BBCh :)) Or I might just get a pair of 26" wheelset (they do fit in pretty well) :)

I'm telling my story as it will give an insight. All the best.

Yes wheel issues (tyres, tubes, rim tape, liner, spokes, hubs) are kinda scary. So it is a better idea to buy stuff which more people use so that spares can be obtained easily.

Having said that, it is best to talk to the LBS to make this decision. Noobs should also read that epic post in BZ by Guadzilla.

Just for my curiosity - what is the connection between a newbie and MTB? What's wrong with a road bike? If the saddle is set right then the feet don't touch the ground on either bike. Also, if a person is set up for comfort not aerodynamics on a road bike then roadsters are comfortable too. Also, a person, who is not a WWF wrestler but, who weighs a quintal doesn't seem to be a very fit person. In which case why would you want to increase his pain by putting him on a heavy bike which will make him struggle while riding. Rather put him up on a bike which is easy to ride and uber comfortable viz road bike with raised stem or Trek 7100 with adjustable stem.
Further, this person's upper body would be heavy as well. On a MTB all that weight would come to his wrists and would hurt at some point. If you make him sit more upright then more of his weight will be taken by the saddle and less strain on the wrists.

No, I am not praising road bikes nor am I hard selling. I am only attacking the thought process that newbies should go to MTBs.

'nuff said.

I hear 2 real concerns here - frame sizing and spares.

Only tall folks on 29ers is a wrong perception. Most 29ers from good brands are build with geometries that accomodate shorter folks.
Bike sizing is something any good bike shop will take care of - http://blog.bumsonthesaddle.com/2013/03/09/bike-fit-vs-bike-sizing

Spares - its getting sorted out. AFAIK we have most spares for these bikes now. Pratheesh, you didnt find tires at BOTS? Im pretty sure  BOTS has tires and tubes for 29ers. Dunno about other bike shops in India.

A couple of years back we used to struggle for spares for 26" bikes too. Its a lot better now.

Genuine accessory - not sure what this is all about. My guess is that this is something that has been borrowed from the motor vehicle world. Here we typically have quite a lot of choice to add on more bling or better components once the original are worn out. Or lost.

Other stuff
- get your disc brakes checked - maybe just a setup issue. You dont really need hydraulic brakes for 'good performance'
- government, customs duties and world peace - some day hopefully. We always have our fingers crossed.
- duty on your stuff coming in - anything from 0% - 30%
- tall friend, short bike, hip issue - can be a bunch of things. Starting with a wrong sized bike.

I have a Trek marlin 29er.

I am facing Break issues from this bike (  Tektro Novela mechanical disc brakes). It not good even consider with v-type breaks for normal bikes.

29 tires have greater torque than 26 and this break is not sufficient to stop. Its need hydraulic disc brake for good performance.  Another problem I faced to get spare for this bike. I have to order from Amazon or eBay worldwide website. Even our local showroom guys will ask very high price for parts and they need 15 to 20 days for delivery. 29 inch tire and tubes you will not get any domestic showrooms.

I brought a Hydraulic disc brake for my bike costs 14K including shipment from hongkong. But the worst part is our government charges import duty as 40 % for Bicycle accessories and I don't know about that. So again I paid 6K as import duty. Even motor vehicles spares  duty will come less than 30%. I am wondering why this f**k**g is doing to a nature friendly manpowered vehicle.

Now I ordered a wheel and tube from Amazon I don't know how much they will take as import duty. (I searched all over Bangalore for 29 inch tire and finally bought from Amazon). Including tire and tube costs more than 4.5K (I don't know how much import duty I have to pay because order is on transit) and I didn't get genuine Bontrager 29x2.1. So I took Kenda tires with same specifications

So the conclusion is if you are going for 29er its very difficult to get spares (If you are going for 4300 you will get same problem for genuine accessories but you can manage with other brands accessories or you will get lot of options as because  of 26 is a common standard). Importing or purchasing from abroad is not a budget friendly option

Other thing you have to consider is Frame size. As a Six feet guy can take (for Trek only)18 to 21 inch frames. I know some friend they took Larger frame size and suffering hip problems while riding.

Pratheesh
