Hi Farhad,

My husband Mohan ordered a shaft-drive bike for himself from TI in Ambattur, Chennai...but I don't think they are available in the market.

Cheers, Deepa.

Hi

Are shaft-drive bikes available in India? Was just thinking about the
bicycles that are MADE in India and realized that we are way behind as
far as technology is concerned.

Without being limited to what's available in India, are there any good shaft-drive bikes? If anyone knows one, I'd love to find out about it.
A while back I considered buying a used Biomega AMS http://moderndna.com/rides/biomega-ams-bicycle/
While researching the model, I found that reviews weren't great - here is an extract from bikehugger
"The shaft drive is a love it or hate it thing. We appreciated the functionality of it and nearly immediately discovered the downside. Zero maintenance, looks cool — great — but massive friction, speed limitations, and a gear range that, hobbled by frictional losses, isn’t going to get you up any hill."

I used to own a motorcycle with a shaft drive and never had anything but praise for that (low maintenance, worked great), so I would expect it should work for bikes too. However, I'm no mechanical engineer, maybe there are limitations on a bike.

Deepa, are you saying your husband has a shaft-drive bike? How does he like it? If you can share more details, I'd appreciate it. Details such as model, cost, ordering process would be useful.

I remember someone posting links to a (firang) bike manufacturer who made these, with shimano internal hubs having a triple cahinring-ed roadbike-ish range.... The maintenance free part of it is very lucrative alright. But apparently, its a nightmare to fix flats on them, as they have no quick-release kinda thing
