Given that

1) this event was hardly given any publicity,(was too busy)
2) Its not a very easy route - there are some bad sections
3) The heat and the humidity

I'm just astounded. Sometimes you have to admit that Bangalore stands out when it comes to cycling, compared to other places in India.

Though this would be my 3rd Brevet, it would be my first 300 k - attempt

previous 2 were , Salumarada 200 and bangarpet 200.

In a sense.. i might be a first timer for the 300 :)

Bangalore has always cycled more kilometers in brevets compared to any
other club for 3 years running now (approx. ~75000km, 51000km and
~64000km).

Given the fact that we don't run dozens of 200K just to boost up the
mileage (unlike some other clubs :) ), we have both breadth and depth
in long distance cycling.

Congratulations to the community!

wow, superb nos!

Kudos to Bangalore cyclists...

In spite of numbers bikers taking part is increasing still first year kms is far ahead, quite surprising.  Seems to be more data makes it very interesting analysis.

All the best guys who are attempting KGF 300 kms.

It's my first 300. Did the Bangalore sira 200km last year but did 190 and had to pull out due to a fall. It felt something like you have waited a lot of time for your movie to download and at 95% it says "failed to download". This time determined to finish it injury or not.

For riders unaware of what to expect on this route...
This was my ride report when i did a recce in august...You can expect almost the same now but i would expect the heat has increased during the day.

RIDE REPORT:

I really love this brevet not just because it goes through countryside and has  beautiful scenery but its my first brevet back in dec 2011. As a 17yr old then many said I would not be able to do it but with just the experience on one 200km ride I just jumped into this ride hoping to finish it and I did it with more than half hour to spare.

So I just wanted to see how this route is now. planned on leaving from IISc at 4.30 with shashank. A usual some starting troubles occured and left at 4.50pm heading towards malur. Was pretty fast but was hungry so we guys had to stop at hoskote for tea and biscuits and decided to be fast till malur. Surprise awaited us in that stretch. The road was narrow with cracks and potholes in between but navigable but with loads of lorry traffic. So we had to be slow.reached malur at 7.15. From the last time I remembered a nice place for breakfast. Its right next to the back up SBI atm.

Had idlis and coffee and started in 20min. The road from here was newly paved and largely descending, so we guys just punched it. And the suddenly out of nowhere there were no roads and in some stretches the road was really bad for the next 4km till tekkal. And the same for the next 4km after tekkal also. And the rest of the roads till bethmangala was superb.Reached bangarpet at at 9.30pm. Had some snacks and stretched for 5-10 min and then we guys left.

Hell started from here. The roads from here to V.kota was terrible except a few stretches were there were good roads.Out of the 17km in this stretch,10-12km has really bad roads. And this V.kota is in andra there are blockades such that no car or lorry can pass through. Both of us know telugu so we managed to find a shop and rest for some time and started. Moreover almost all the shops were closed with the exception of few. So I would advice the guys attempting this ride next week not to spend too much time here if you dont know telugu as the environment is very hostile and just be friendly with the guys there. And the road from V.kota to pernambut is awesome. Starts with huge rolling climbs and flattens out and then descends out totally into pernambut. Had lunch here and Shashank starts complaing that the heat is too much for him to bear. So I told him to ride till vaniyambadi and then drop. Since this stretch has trees on both sides the shade area is more. But he started giving up and he popped near ambur. So I had to take a detour to ambur(detour bcuz we need not go to ambur in the brevet) to drop him and then I carried on to krishnagiri.

Started from ambur at 3 and reached krishnagiri at 7.15. Too much of head winds in this stretch. I had to take frequent breaks because the sun was also scorching. Crossed krisnagiri and had dinner at a dhaba. By this time I was totally exhausted.Took 45min rest here and started at 8.15. From here shoolagiri was around 25km. I thought I would take another 2hrs for this stretch as it has huge climbs but I mangaed to cross shoolagiri by 9.20pm. My climbing prowess has increased largely after I did the yelagiri climb last month in 55min(14km climb in 55 min was huge for me then) Don't from where I got the strength and with this new found energy I vowed to myself that I will reach hosur by 10.30 ie 25km with huge climbs again in 1hr 10 min. On the way it started to rain, so I had to stop and put on my rain jacket. Managed to reach hosur by 10.40 and the had a coffee and took rest for around 15 min and started from hosur at 11 and reached silk board at 12.15(last 30km of the brevet in 1hr and 15 min).It started raining again so was slow from here till IISc. Reached IISc by 1.00am.

Had covered 365kms in 20hrs with a ride time of 15hrs. Was surely one of my best rides.

Cheers,
Vijay.

Keep a steady pace with minimum and short breaks and cover as much as distance possible until 12 PM when the heat is "less".
Take it easy after that with lunch and frequent hydration breaks. This is the time period when you drop from the plateau to the hot plains (Peranambut - Vaniyambadi)
Some how manage until 3-4PM, until the sun starts to go down. After this, once is bound to feel more energetic.
Thus, post sunset, climbing back from Krishnagiri (400mtrs) to Bangalore (950+mtrs) should be all fine :-)

Oh its hot. I rode in the sun the last 2-3 days to check it out. Tilll the ride to V.Kota its going to be a dry roast, then they get down to the TN plains where the humidity will help cook them, and finally when they thank the sun for going down, they'll have to deal with the climb to Hosur

yes anil,

till malur , lots of headwinds.
after that the worse ,  heat .
once you reach krishnagiri by sunset,  you face the uphills !

few dropped out near krishnagiri just because they thought they will not be able to make in time :(

i took an half hour rest just after pernumbt  under the shades and half an hour at vaniyambadi apart from the lunch break just to escape the sun and heat  .
also had to ride alone for almost full ride , managed to reach end control at 11.10 pm

Congrats to all those who finished it before 2am and also to those who didn't do it in time but still cycled back to bangalore. The sun was just too insane. Witnessed one bad accident before bangarpet. I think around 3-4 teeth were gone. Hope he is alright.
The sun , the road, the climb all adds to a very challenging brevet.

Umm I forgot his name. He was riding a light green hybrid. . It was his second time doing the brevet and last time he couldn't finish it in time. Very unfortunate that even this time he couldn't finish it.
The mugging scenes were pretty common. Stopped on the tekhal road for natures call and two kids were trying to detach my odometer.

Message to all the riders: if a villager asks the price of your bike just say 10k and 15k even if you have a 3L bike. Coz the moment you say anything above 20k they get to know you can afford to pay a lot for a cycle and try to mug you.

I decided to call it a day a few km before the second control @ Pernambut.  Had a pretty good start and covered 25 Km in the first hour but a puncture before Malur was a setback and threw a wrench into my plan of flying through the first control @ Malur.  I find fixing rear wheel punctures difficult since getting the wheel back on is tricky. Thanks to Roopesh from Mysore for helping. Reached Malur about 30 min before the control closed and got some breakfast but the struggle started soon after. After I got the puncture fixed my chain kept kept coming off periodically while shifting gears which was a nuisance to deal with. The heat and sharp glare of the sun was energy sapping. The thirst was never quenched - consumed approx 3 Litres of water + 1 600 ml bottle of Fruity + 1 coconut + one 7 up in the relatively short 130 km I rode.

I was in a small village (the locals I think called it Kotur though could not find this on this route) when the chain came off again @ 3 pm. It was then that I decided to call it quits. The rest of my narrative is focused on people I met who helped in making my way back to Whitefield so peruse if you have nothing better to do.

Kotur(?) to Oorgaum:

I walked my way to a very small tea shop just to get out of the blazing sun. The shop was run by a middle aged couple. I dont speak any telugu but was able to get the message across that I needed to get back to Bangalore. Had seen a few tempos pass and asked if I could hop onto them but was told that they were all heading towards Chennai. I was told that there was a bus @ 3:30 pm which would take me to "Vgirikota" from where one could catch another bus to Bangalore. The owner also promised to help talk to the conductor to take my bike- had heard that this could be a problem from other posts on this forum. After a few minutes of initial disappointment at quitting my mood lifted and I decided to enjoy my journey back to Bangalore. Ordered some tea, inquired whether they had anything to eat. Lunch was over but the couple conversed in Telegu for a couple min and then the lady came back with a plateful of idlis and medhu vadas dipped in sambhar which brought a smile to my lips. Washed my face and rather greasy hands with surf and dug into the food - tasted wonderful even though it was the spiciest sambhar I have ever eaten. The lady refilled my plate with vadas as the plate emptied without me even asking- it felt pretty good. While I was finishing up a bus showed up which was chock full of passengers. After a quick discussion between the conductor and my host I was asked to get in. Someone climbed on the back ladder of the bus. Another villager passed my bike to him and it made its way to the roof. After some rummaging around my hostess found a piece of rope which was used to secure my bike to the roof of the bus. I quickly paid for my meal and as a mark of thanks to the couple I gave a bag of almonds and raisins which I was carrying but had not eaten in the heat. In the confusion of loading the bike I had forgotten my helmet and gloves which were brought to me as I was boarding the bus. Through this entire episode the entire busload full of folks waited patiently while a guy in  funny clothing and his bike were loaded on the bus.
The conductor of the bus was a helpful chap and he started chatting once we started proceeding towards Vgirikota. Since he spoke only telegu and I spoke none we roped in a translater which made things fun. He gave me some friendly guidance that I should not have biked this long a distance and should have taken the bus. When it eventually became clear to them that I was not being forced to bike from Bangalore but was doing this as a "interest" - I became the topic of discussion in the rear half of the bus. When the conductor found out that I was going to Whitefield he suggested that I take the KGF- KR puram train instead of the bus. I shared a raisin muffin my wife had baked with him while we were chatting. He asked me what it was and I told him it was a cake. So the plan was modified- the bus made a special stop at Oorgaum- the engine was turned off, the conductor and 2 others got off to help get my cycle down. The conductor hailed a passing auto and explained to the driver that he needed to take me to the railway station and help get my cycle on the train. Again the entire busload of locals waited patiently while this scene unfolded slowly. The conductor helped load the bike in the back seat of the auto and I sat next to the driver upfront after which I bid the conductor adieu. 2 min later we were at the Oorgaum railway station.

Oorgaum - KR puram:

The auto driver helped walk my bike to the station and we went up to the ticket counter. Paid Rs 15 for the ticket to whitefield ( how does that work for that long a ride?) and inquired about the bike.  The ticket guy said that it was not possible to book the bike so I stopped asking further questions with the intent of just getting on. I shared a cup of coffee and some conversation with the auto guy while we waited. The train showed up- it was chock full with no space for me let alone the bike. The auto guy said not to worry- He somehow parted the sea of humanity and got the bike on with me following in tow while train started moving. I paid him and said my thanks. Interestingly I found out that this train was heading towards KFG and would empty out there and then go back to Bangalore. I struck a conversation with another passenger who advised me that I should get a bus pass instead of cycling such long distances. There were several hawkers on the train selling peanuts, bhel, roated peanuts and chana and also a lady selling vegetables in plastic bags of approx half kg each. I guess this is convenient for folks returning home from work and saves them having to stop at the local grocery shop. The rest of the journey to KR Puram was uneventful and very comfortable except that at KFG station the TT walked by and asked me to remove my bike or else he would call the police. I tried reasoning with him but he would not listen and stalked off with some strong words. I consulted some fellow passengers who advised to sit tight and so I did. Thankfully the TT did not make an appearance again. We reached KR Puram around 7:25 pm - I dismounted and rode till phoenix mall for a nice dinner with the family at Chilis.
Thanks to the villagers who made my return smooth and enjoyable.

Congrats to all the guys who finished- lots of respect.
