That's a nice message....my immediate thought....

Front: "I'm a big wheel at the BBC"

Back: "Bangalore Bikers Club"

What say?

There'z nothing spl in the shirt.

On Deep's reply, I can suggest the same, but with another option for
"one liner".

I wud suggest:
FRONT => a nice bike logo, & under that say B B C. And in the middle
say "Put The Fun Between Your Legs" :-) (dunno how far its 'ok')
BACK => say the full form of BBC (Bangalore Bikers Club) & our website
address.

What say??

With a slight wavy background and bold color letters I think it can look pretty good.

I will change the font to something better and we can add something about the actual email address or something, but the idea is there...

Thanks :-D

I guess the top one is the favorite... I'll work on it this weekend to
add the email address and maybe add some colors.
I'll take inspiration from Phil's tricolor based logo and try a
patriotic variant.

Maybe we should start a slogan's thread as well beginning with Vishy's
entry.
I had a double-entendre along similar lines: "Feel good, get on top
today" (heh! heh!)

I think a slogan is not required - The logo looks great. Whatsmore
deciding on the slogan will take for ever :)
So lets pick one (Rajat's or Phil's) design and get a bunch of tees
printed.

How about each one gets his/her tee as per their volition and then we all get it printed through one guy? That way, u get to pick what you want the logo on. The logistics will have to be dealt with though

I had originally planned these to be for printing on iron-on transfer paper... and distribute those. We can also do an initial batch using a professional.

You are most welcome to directly use the pdf's to make your own prints Since its a vector the pdf can be enlarged/reduced to suit the application without loss of quality.
(there is the fine point of color matching across printers but I guess its okay).

I am a believer of 'Free as in Freedom', I am more than willing to provide the original inkscape svg's for community development. If somebody is motivated enough to do so please drop me a mail and I'll send them across.

Ideas/suggestions/sketches are most welcome.

Without the intention of being pompous this is my first real effort at something like this and frankly I am myself impressed with the results. If I can manage this with the basics then I am really keen to see what a (semi)professional graphic artist can do. Anyone with some (in)formal art training in the group?

Cheers

My two bits again...how about a collarless tee with full sleeves as
well as the half-sleeve one? I always have to wear full sleeves while
cycling as otherwise my arms get badly sunburnt. Probably the guys
don't mind this! :)

Put me down for one if there is a f/s version possible! I don't know
about "sexy" and "cool" and "with it" but I do enjoy cycling...have
been enjoying it as a regular mode of transport in Bangalore for
...let me see...about twenty years now, which might be how old some of
you are.... I guess I was "with it" before there was an "it"! When I
started cycling around, it was the done thing to buy A car; then it
became the done thing to have TWO cars...that's the way our traffic
problems have developed, I think. Perhaps, if petrol had always been
the present price...!

Oh, yes, the sad truth is that every now and then I do have to use the
autos, when using the bus or cycle takes tooo much time...or I have
a lot of stuff to carry, which won't fit on my LRT.

And I avoid going out late at night alone; if my car-loving husband is
with me...guess what happens! (Clue: the word for husband in Tamizh is
"aathu ...car"!)

So I compromise quite a lot....my cycling is confined, generally, my
solo outings during the daytime, and that too, as I said, to <10km.

I wrote a funny article about my cycling experiences once...must dig
it out and send it to this egroup!

Cheers, and happy cycling,

Deepa.

Hi

I HAVE reused the ubuntu logo, so request all to hang on printing the Ubuntu tribute logo till I receive permission from trade...@ubuntu.com since it is more than a Remix , and printing on tees is merchandise that requires explicit permission. In all probably I will have to add a fineprint depicting the original ubuntu log

The other logo's are free from restrictions except the following honor-based guidelines (primarily to ensure basic similarity across variants):
1. The logos can be rotated, skewed and resized.
2. Elements can be added, colors/alpha changed, filters applied
3. The logo is to be used only in direct relation to Bangalore-Bikers publicity, website, merchandise etc. Use of elements existing and new to form a separate trademark unrelated to Bangalore-Bikers requires authors' permission. (sorry for the language but its important to maintain identity)
4. You are free to provide and charge a fee for any derivative merchandise as long as it is for the explicit purpose of promoting Bangalore-Biker and cycling

Hi ,

I like the One made from the BBC letter .......
i Guess there is no need of any slogan but we can have a punch line
instead ...

And i think grey color is quite good for the color of the T-shirt ..
and we can have a small logo on the top left for the front ..
and for the back a logo and a punch line ....

I definitely will....

Following is the mail I have sent to Ubuntu trademarks guys:
Hi
We are a small and growing community of cyclists in Bangalore, India. We form the Bangalore-Bikers Club. Its a non-profit common interest group for promoting cycling in our city. I have designed basic elements (caricature depictions of cycles) for use as logo elements.

As part of a finished logo I have created an Ubuntu tribute logo (pdf attached), the idea being to convey the "Free as in Freedom" spirit of community development and information exchange in our cycling community. The original is an svg image. It is not the intent to make this the primaly logo of the group. I am still working on the primary logo for e.g. the tricolor variant is one example of a finished logo.

The primary application of the Ubuntu tribute logo is to make a limited amount of T-Shirts for group members. Since it is based on the Ubuntu logo I wanted clarification on whether we can use this derivative ? I am more than willing to add any required elements such as the original ubuntu logo and promotion/legal statement etc.

I have no intention of subverting or profiteering from the Ubuntu trademark and mean this primarily as a tribute, but I do understand that use of the logo can be construed as misuse and do not wish to step over legal boundaries.

Good one Rajat! :) I am obviously biased towards the ubuntu one! ;) We do have non Indian members already and also in future - Tricolor might be a lil... :) Just a thought! We had once changed our volunteer group from Indians to Individuals for voluntary activities to accommodate everybody! ;)

BTW we shud have a punch line at the back (if the logo is to go on front) a narcisitic one -

I cycle therefore I am!

For ubuntu shirt -

"Linux is open and so am I...

Cycling is fun and ... "
That's for people to decide! ;)

Let the creative juices keep flowing! :D

have fun,

Rajat, Ubuntu logo  looks really cool on PC.
Will it have same appeal, when printed on T-shirt.

I have seen a lot of threads dying eventually without action, after so much enthu generated initially.
Not sure, of this one too...but anyways this is one interesting discussion and good for BBC and cycling in general.

True, correct color output requires monitor calibration and printer profile mapping. This is more of an art and best left to professionals. For mere mortals I guess the best bet is to test it empirically. Be prepared to printout test outputs and then adjust based on saturation and brightness comparisons.

For the very same reason I would prefer plain black & white, fairly straightforward and gives good results with a dedicated black ink cartridge.

Finally you can always go to a good DTP who also do graphic designing/printing, their systems would probably be calibrated sufficiently to see the final color as it will be printed on a certain printer profile.

Hi Rajat,

Logos looks really cool. I have already picked one as my desktop
background ;)

And for Printing t-Shirts....
We have few options:-

We can buy cotton shirts outside and print it. If we use screen
printing option then it may cost less for printing. But Getting
different shades might be difficult.

Else we can print in "printo" shop. But with printo we get all type of
shirts with then and we cannot bring shirts from outside.

About printing at Wizz I don't think they have f/s tees. But we can
buy tees outside.

But count me in for any options. Last time I printed tees at wizz it
costed around 400+ for each tees.

Tx dude... :)

Printing at Whizz sounds like a very practical idea, maybe we can even get a discount for more prints.

Any ideas about where we can buy plain tees (white, light grey, something similar) in bulk for cheap. Is there some shop in Commercial Street or maybe near National Market ?

Printing at whizz is Probably a easy way but slightly costly. Last
time I went for 10 tees they did not give any discount :(
I brought the tees in "Bombay Dyeing" in 4th block, but it had
collar, I can show you once(if) we meet.

But I believe we can find other options also. Or we may bring normal
tees with out collar what we get in west side or other sports shop
which costs cheaper as they give in bunch of 3.

switcher also has good T shirts ..

You guys are welcome to keep the T shirts at the BOTS Store .. folks who drop in to pick up bikes and accessories might just want to pick these up and join the club :)
I know someone who did BOTS T shirts for us for a reasonable price .. if you guys can get the design ready we can get this done... he also has T Shirts with him -  good options - dry fit (kinda) material, decent cotton stuff too ..

hi guys,

i'm a novice (30ks every weekend) to the group, and currently am bed ridden with a dislocated patella (in my left knee) so no cycling for a while now... since i'm bed ridden and completely useless to do anything at the moment (other than driving my wife up the wall) i can volunteer helping on 'project t-shirt'.

i'm in advertising and should be in a position to help in design fine-tunings (if necessary, although in my opinion the current design is very, very 'kwool') and also in sourcing and printing the t's. feel free to get in touch with me if i can be of any assistance.

@Bikam - get well soon man, dislocated patella... jesus!! I had a shoulder dislocation once and felt like i was dying. Must have been painful dude, take care.

I made some inquiries:

Terminology:
Transfer-on printing - prints made on transfer on paper (laser or ink jet) and then pressed onto the shirt, lasts around 5 washes

Screen printing - something along these lines http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screen-printing , lasts around 25-30 washes

Offset printing - something these lines http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Offset_printing, similar to screen but for large quantities

Do not confuse these prints with those kinds of tees where the print is rubbery to the touch, that is something else altogether.

Quotes:
Vendor; print type; t-shirts sourced by  us / vendor / either; bw / color; size and sides; cost; comments

Whizz; transfer-on; vendor; bw or color; A4 single side; 465; cotton tees black or white, cant use ur own
Ctrl-p; screen; either; bw or color; A4 single side; 250 for polyester t, 150 per print; their t is not good, discounts for > 20
Guru colortech; screen; either; bw; A4 single side; 200 for cotton t, 75 per print; no idea what the t is like, discounts for > 100

imho I recommend going the screen printing way and sourcing the tees ourselves. I jus popped into pantaloons on the way, there is a sale going and they have plain cotton tees (fairly good, white and some other colors) @ 3 for 400
So sourcing our own tees and using screen printing and bw only it should be possible to get a double side printed t for around 300 bucks.

if you guys know of other printers can you get a quote and send it the format above, we can compare and decide on one.

How about embroidery ?

It will be about 10-30 rs per t-shirt depending on the artwork and this lasts as long as the t-shirt.

Bikram,
All the artwork is on the thread as pdf's. You can use those for getting quotes. Quantity/sizes/quality/price..... its a chicken-and-egg story.

Quantity:
Why don't you assume some numbers and get quotes.

Sizes:
The price difference should typically be the same or around 10% plus or minus.

Quality:
The best possible after assuming the above two.

coolgal_mishu had suggested painting our own T. I had some time yesternight so I did just that. She is right, its a lot of fun :-)

Cost of brush - 70/-
Cost of paint - 15/- (Fevicryl acrylic fabric paint)
Time to trace image - 15 mins
Time to paint it - 90 mins

Tracing is simple, display the image on the laptop at full brightness, put the T shirt on the screen and with all external lights off you can see the image through the material (if it is thin enough). Use a soft pencil to trace the image.

Painting and filling in is a little tricky, it takes a bit of practice before the brush starts moving smoothly automatically.

After 24hrs it needs to ironed on the back and then it will be permanent.

Result (see attached photo). Will wear it to office tomorrow :)

Cheers
Rajat

On the one hand (yes, this is one of those "on the one hand this and
on the other hand that" emails!) I do love painting tees, and have
done a lot of them ...Indian messages for a lot of people in the US...
I used to buy plain white tees in Ranganathan St in T Nagar, don't
know where we could get there in Blr, but that can be easily found
out.....

On the other hand, I also feel that instead of each of us buying
paints, brushes, and frames (oh yes, the results are much neater if
the sweatshirt fabric is put in a frame),, we just get it printed,
because it will last longer, too, that way.

And having a variety of finishes on hand-painted tees (remember we
are using acrylic paint, not vegetable dyes!), different varieties of
tees, and getting varying results... vs. having the uniformity of the
material, and the printed logo....which you vote for depends on your
point of view.

And totally agree with Rohan, must get good quality stuff, in fact I
would specify a blend fabric instead of pure cotton which tends to
lose its shape and deteriorate faster....getting cheaper material goes
against the concept of buying Treks and Merridas! ;)

And are we unanimous on full-sleeves, because that will push up the
cost? I certainly need full sleeves.

Deepa.

Hey Deepa
Don't get me wrong... I am not saying we all **must** paint our own... neither am I saying we **must not**, I am showing that if you are the types who don't like waiting around and like to DIY (like me) then this is one way. Of course I will pick up a printed T when it comes along ;)

Also acrylic fabric paints once dried and made permanent (by ironing) last as long as printed T. The acrylic carries the dye to the fabric and the dye binds permanently. That is one of the reasons to be very careful while using fabric paint, its very easy to stain ur clothes but very hard to get it off.

Color variations will not occur if using single colors (no mixing) of the same company and color code. I used fevicryl black 02. It will be uniform, thats their job and they take it very seriously ;)

Material is ofcourse not uniform the DIY way....

Reply from Ubuntu...
Was busy shifting my house so missed forwarding this.

I had anticipated a reply like this... so officially we can't use/adopt the ubuntu tribute logo so there....

I am already hunting for a spare t-shirt to make one though ;)

Hi Rajat,

Thank you for contacting us.

Whilst we do appreciate the intent behind the logo and the tribute, in terms of our trademark policy we do not allow our logo to be used with any other marks or logos.

We wouldn't have an issue if an image was placed in the centre of the logo, but we can't accept the an image placed on top of the logo.

We do appreciate your tribute, and have no problems with you making the t-shirts and displaying our logo. I hope that you understand our position in this regard.

Kind regards,

Michelle

I happened to be at Forum today... On a whim I went to Nike and found
out that even though the sale was over they have some excess stock,
particularly plain white dry-fit skin tight jersey, that is at 50%
discount.
I ended up buying a 1295 one for 650. Was I conned? or is that an okay
buy?

The sale stock is usually different from the regular stock. So you've actually bought the jersey at discount (i.e. they haven't doubled the price and put it up for sale)

However the real value of the jersey might be debatable as you might find something better for a lower price (i.e. lesser than 1295)

Thanks!
