Hey Folks,

Just saw Opendro's post on how he narrowly missed having his bike stolen.
A few others have not been so lucky.

Please ensure you have a good lock/chain and that the bike is secured to something stationary.
More often than not bikes are lost because of carelessness and a "it-wont-happen-to-me" assumption.

I have spoke to quite a few folks who have just lost their bike and they are mostly frantic at that moment.
Spoke to a few of these and came up with a list of things to do if you lose a bike
We are also working with an insurance company to come up with a comprehensive insurance plan for all of us and should have something concrete soon.

Sucks to lose a bike! Prevention is definitely better than cure.

BTW, do you have any statistics on how many stolen bikes have been recovered?

I rarely hear of a stolen bike being found. In a few cases, some kid may have taken the bike for a joy ride. Mostly, I would assume that bikes are being stolen for money and it is unlikely you will get your bike back in such cases.

An insurance plan for $$ bikes sounds interesting.

At a time when even mobiles phones have insurance, its high time companies start insuring bicycles as well.

After all, the only major insurance claim that can come is from the cycle getting stolen or some minor repairs like broken fork, bent handlebar etc. The expenses are nothing compared to that a motorbike/car can run into.

Thanks Rohan , for pursuing this.

Not sure how many in this forum will ba aware, but New India Assurance allows you to get your bike inluded as part of your householder policy.. I am in the process of doing this and so will be able to confirm once the policy is done to confirm how it runs..

I am still trying to find out the exact details but from the forms that I had I think they will reimburse only 15000 Rs (or the cost the bike, "whichever is lower" !!) I was wondering in which age are these guys living !! :)

There is bicycle insurance available.

I am attaching the policy terms document from Futuregeneral for pedal cycle insurance.

I got the link from Firefox website. Have not yet taken a policy, though.

Ashok

Firefox and Trek have collaborated with Future Generali to get insurance. But other brands are yet to do - I guess Rohan is talking about doing that.

thank you & regards

The policy document doesn't say it is only for Firefox and Trek, does it? Let me enquire with them.

Thanks and regards,
Ashok

Hi All,

I am working with a general insurance company only.

All the companies offer Pedal Cycle Insurance...but it will be a tedious job to get the claim in case of loss and as it is very much prone to give rise to fraud claims...insurance companies are not willing to sell this product.

Like mobile phone dealers..Universal or Sangeetha...I think it will be better if dealers like BOTS..RR Cycles can approach Insurance Company and opt for a cover for all their customers. In that case, Claim process will be easier also and better service will be given by Insurance Company.

I figured out what to do with this info...I put it up on my blog at CitMat,

Spreading the word is good. What is the percentage of cycles recovered? Does anyone have any feedback? Rohan, do you have a facility whereby those who have recovered their bikes can also report that on the list?

Cheers, Deepa.
