Sudhir's 24 hour effort

What a ride? After a few ten thousand kms training on mtb for quite some years now.... The tall man, 7 feet + when unfolded, got an amazing roadbike specially manufactured for his size, and custom built it with the best of the components available (durace, 105 et. al)....

So, saturday 5 pm was the historic moment, when Sudhir started his 24 hour attempt from ccd. Anita, reena, anke, sandeep n myself started along. The idea was to do multiple laps on airport road till morning and then attempt nandi.

Within 1 km, sudhir was no where to be seen. He started off at some crazy pace, while we all were doing some leisure paced ride till about 25 kms before turning back. We reached ccd at 8ish (50 kms done) to meet sudhir, only to realize that he had a crash. Thankfully, no bones were damaged. I had to leave, but the rest of the gang continued supporting him till about 1 am.

Anita, reena and self completed 100 kms for the day. After anita, reena n sandeep left, Thammaiah came in his car at around 2 am to stick around with sudhir. This was the phase when he required support the most, the lights on the road were turned off, and Thammaiah did an awesome job of driving at the right pace and not bumping into him, for about 5 hours.....

Then came Nalla (and Sachin) for the nandi climb bit. Sudhir did the first climb in 36m20sec, after 14+ hours on the saddle!!!!!!!!! Did the next one and took a break for breakfast. By this time, he did tire a bit (to prove that he is still a human) and took a power nap on his third climb.

By the time he finished the third lap, Suma joined in. So, it was now Nalla and Suma supporting Sudhir as he fought cramps. This was his first ride on a roadbike, and his hands were a bit paining. By around 2, Nalla had to leave and Suma continued her support....

Meanwhile, Reena, anita n me had assembled at ccd by 3.30 and we started our ride to meet Sudhir. (I was on my bike today). It was indeed a proud moment for us, cheering Sudhir as he averaged 30kmph in the last 10 kms.... Taking the uphills as strong as ever, sprinting.... What a sight!

Close to 400 kms done, and Sudhir insisted on riding back home.... We all bonked, and stayed back at ccd indulging in high-calorie snacks on Sudhir's behalf! :)

Hats off Sudhir.... We had outsourced the riding part on behalf of the team to you, and you are exceeding our expectations :P

PS: congrats and special thanks to all supporters and riders... As a team, we have clocked close to 1000 kms (combined mileage) in these two days!!!

myself I started riding today again after 3 weeks rest because of my leg infection (cellulitis) that hindered me from riding all this time. rode from home to nandi with vivek and 11 Am on arrival back in vasanthnagar felt so spent it was not funny, had probably my slowest ever Nandi timing and found it super tough!
while riding out after CDD Vivek told me about your plans, hoped to see you on the road and then saw you where i did not expect you, desce3nding form nandi while I was struggling up ...!
wanted to shout: he sudhir, now for sure  you got a new bike !but your were gone like the wind!

An it would've been hell if it werent for all the awesome support i got from the Cleated warriors team mates and others during the ride.....

@Georg: Good to hear u r back on the saddle again.... U looked strong enough on the climb

@george: i slept a net amount of ~ 1hr broken into power naps of 10 mins, half an hr etc...
The rest of the break time went into tweaking my saddle position, handlebar position etc. (as my bike had just arrived, and i couldnt test it on a long ride before that)... Lot of stretching breaks, as all the riding in the wrong position totally screwed my back and wrists.... And of course, the post-fall clean up and mending wounds and bike break

Rode 372 km in the 24 hrs... The 400 km that venkat has mistakenly put there is including the riding i did to and from the start point (which would be ~ an added hour)

p.s: For those of u who r wondering why i did this on a fresh new bike instead of waiting to get used to it.... the bike was supposed to be here long ago, in fact months ago! and if all went as i had visioned, i would've done a 250+ km ride already on it... All the 250 km training rides happened on my mtb instead.... Doing this ride next week would've kept it too close to ultrabob for optimum recovery.... So just somehow tucked the ride in.

I can't even imagine if one can think something like this on the first
day of the bike. But no doubts on you as I have gained much reading
your blogs ( roasteed neutrons stuck first time I read it ) , watching
you ride and achieve distances. Hope not much worries about the fall..
and wish you a super fast recovery for yet another wonderful ride of
the season .. UltraBOB..

I got to know that Sudhir was trying a 24 hr ride but could not find
any details on the start / end points or the loop on BBC or BZ.. Tried
refreshing the whole night on Sat, thinking of a ride in the morning
and slept in the day :)

where many others would have given up.

LOL badri.. i can understand the confusion now.

Here is my ride report.
I was with Sudhir from 5.40 am till 1.45 pm yesterday. Started riding from Nandi turnoff and caught up with him at base.
Climbed Nandi thrice with him.. i am very bad at hill climbing and the first climb was infact my first one without taking a break during climbing. I took 37 min and 19 seconds (my personal best till date) to climb and believe it or not.. Sudhir did it in one minute lesser !! Boy.. all that even after riding for 12 + hrs and some 250kms !! I was totally inspired.

Did 2nd climb attempt immediately in about 39 mins (including 2 short breaks which i was forced to take to pick up my goggles which fell down thanks to my idea of keeping it in Salman Khan's Dabangg style i.e. hooking at back of collar)

Had breakfast and attempted third one in a slow pace and biking next to Sud. By now almost all the RFL folks were gone. Did all the descends slowly than my usual ones to stay just in front of Sudhir.

Believe it or not, Sudhir always managed to reach the top Arch before me in all the 3 attempts.. i will be struggling.. huffing and puffing to take the lesser steeper outer edge of climb (even if its wrong lane of the road) and Sud will just take the steeper correct side of the road and zoom off :)

Riding next to Sudhir was really inspirational for me.. i would have never dreamt of doing 3 nandi climbs in day !! Thanks to Sudhir, i finally broke my mental barrier and did climb non-stop :) Understood the significance of maintaining the rhythm. Its much easier to keep going than to break and board the bike again.

Thanks to cleated warrior teammates for support and planning. Thanks to Sachin and Ramesh for riding alongwith us during 2nd climb.
Met Mr 69, Georg, Siva too.

Thanks to RFL folks to cheer us, glad to watch so many strong runners doing multiple trips.. Met Neera after long time.. she did two climbs.. she was running really strong.
