Hi,

Just registered for the "55 Km populaire", and had few queries --

1. Was assigned a jersey no. Do I have to print a bib and get it along ? How does this work ?
2. The CONTROL's are manned, or unmanned (would prefer not to carry the ATM card or any plastic money).
3. Are there any other cycling newbies who would probably not be able to do more than 16-18kmph (average speed) ? Just wondering if I'd be left riding alone, since that's roughly what I can do currently for a relatively easy ride (without hard climbs).
4. R&R says that cycle lights (front white, rear non-blinking red, and back-up lights) & jackets with reflective strips are mandatory, if it rains, but info on the Populaire site seems to contradict those. If it does rain, does the rule kick in ? Don't have any of those, so will have to arrange.

Looking forward to meet some of the online friends, in person there.

cheers,
BD

Yes.

The cuesheet generally indicates whether a control is manned. For this
populaire, all controls are manned.

For the populaire, it is okay not to have any of those even if it
rains, but it is better to get them if you plan to ride brevets.

Hi Sreepathi,

Just for clarification: are we expected to wear a bicycling bib (like
this: http://chavezcycling.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/cycling-bib-shorts.jpg
) with the jersey number printed (how?) on it?

Or is any dry-fit (or cycling jersey) with a small squarish white
cloth and the jersey number printed on it pinned to the back of the
jersey enough?

Thanks,
Naresh

Yes.

Is that just a paper printout, or do I have to get this made on special material / special format ? How / where... pls ?

a paper print out is fine, but you may want to cover it with some
transparent plastic to ensure it holds if it rains. the point is that
you have a clear and visible rider number on you at all times during
the ride.
@naresh : any dry fit jersey is perfectly ok. the only mandatory rule
is for you to have a reflective jacket for a brevet, though even that
rule is relaxed for a populaire.

Sorry for more newbie queries:

- Folks who've registered online, do they need to ensure that they start exactly by 5:30AM ?
- Jersey Bibs required for front & rear ?
- Would there be a place to safely park motorized vehicles at the points of start/finish ?
- What do folks use to hold cue-cards ? Looking for something that is easily available in Bangalore, and doesn't have to be imported. Even ideas for a DIY contraption would be excellent.
- Anybody coming from HSR Lyt/Sarjapura Rd/ORR Jn who might have extra cycle-rack space ?

You need to fill your brevet card and sign a waiver before leaving.
Time accordingly.

Unlike a brevet, the start control for a populaire will close quickly
after the start.

> - Jersey Bibs required for front & rear ?

Keep it visible.

No guarantees of this.

Thanks for the answers.
I guess no one can guarantee safety, but people familiar with the area, would be great if you could recommend a place to park the vehicle ?

Yup - I'm keen to know about parking too, since a couple of us are
driving in from the Whitefield / Indiranagar end of town.

You can park along the Margosa Road, near Maramma temple or next to
the 18th Cross ground. From here, you just have to cross the
unfinished grade separator (single lane is open, coming from the other
side, that is, from IISc main gate, towards Maleswaram) to get to IISc
main gate, and then ride 200-300 meters to your left (towards
Yeshwantapur) to find the IISc Gymkhana gate.

Apologies friends. Just couldn't make it, though was looking forward to it. Was unable to arrange/buy a cycle-rack for car on time, and failed to wake up on time. I hope those who did join had a good ride.

My first populaire today was quite a mixed experience - we got there
on time, met a few folks - started the ride fairly early - out by
6:05-6:10 or so... However my colleague who had returned to biking
after a break was less fit than he thought, so we were into the first
control at 21 km just barely in time. The ride around the lake was
uneventful and lovely - the grasslands are really beautiful, but we
didnt really get alongside the water at any point - we dont see those
in my regular biking areas past Sarjapura / Whitefield. Anyway - then
we missed the turn just after the IIHC canteen, and went in circles
for 8 km - that blew our ability to make the Lakshmipura control,
since we were just doing the minimum 15 kmph - around that point, my
colleagues' legs packed up as well, so we were sitting around on the
road giving him a chance to recover. After that we slowly limped back
along the route to Lakshmipura, stopped for breakfast (idlis at Dodda
Byalakere, not bad), along the way, checked several autos to see if we
could load bike + rider, but all of them kept refusing to go, so
finally when we were about 10 km from IISc, I headed back alone and
returned with the car to pick him up. We got done by about noon, so
just headed homeward directly.

Some comfort, we met several folks who were missing the controls too -
a girl and two guys - lost and retracing routes, etc.

Clearly need some arrangement to fix the cue sheet conveniently - that
was a major pain - also need to study the route in advance - getting
lost was irritating, and my tendency to try shortcuts made things
worse.

Hats off to the organisers though - for all the effort put in, and for
scouting out such a nice route. Hope to do another of these soon -
hopefully with less chaos next time...

Nice report!

We had an unexpected road repair work on the SI road, which wasn't
there a few weeks ago. We should have much better roads next time.

We had a large amount of DNFs this time, almost 50%! We have done much
better on this route (25% DNFs last time).

I was surprised by the lack of preparation from many riders -- a large
number had not even brought a cue sheet. Many were not prepared for
self-sufficient riding at all. Some control volunteers spent a lot of
time fixing a riders flat.

I strongly recommend that people who did not finish read this (if you
haven't done so already):

Hey Guys...

Kudos to Sreepathi Pai and team for organizing brevet riders re-union via a scenic route and it was perfect route for MTB or Hybrid.

Nice to see the crowd at the start point, almost 60-75% on the registered list turned up, I guess.

It was little un-usual ride for me today, started without reflective jackets :) happy happy, exempted and the very first name in the registration list did not joined us for the ride...Na Na

It was an awesome ride for me started @ 6:10am with Vijay, Karthik and few other folks, and after 10kms, they flewed and just before 1st control Dheeraj, Shreedhar joined and we 3 were riding together till the close control.

Sreepathi Pai @ start and close control, Mustafa and team @ the 2nd control and Gokul @ 3rd control

Managed to finish populaire ride in 3:10 mins, getting last for about 5kms without cue-sheet ;) NOT AGAIN managed to clock 71k this morning and celebrated the ride with a refreshing pineapple juice inside IISc campus with Dheeraj (I would recommend try any juice from this juice point, it is simply awesome...planning to ride once in a while here, situated @ Gymkana IISc)

I recommend IISc folks to have this juice point as close control for all brevet rides (kidding)

Medal distribution started around 11am...happy to have received 2 medals and cards for 300 and 400k brevet ride, can't wait to receive 3 more medals >> 1 from Goa for 200k and 600k + Super rando medal from IISc team.

Chiddu, Manjula, Parag: I have collected your brevet cards and getting them along tomorrow to the race venue, please don't forget to collect it.

Medal distribution arrangement too was really well organized with some snacks, cakes, refreshing lime juice, tea...thank you IISc team

Nice to have meeting you one and all during this event

Regards

Sohan

my son and his friend enjoyed every bit of it

my son found it difficult between kakolu and lakshmipura stretch though he was much ahead to reach 2nd control

think i should teach him to use cue sheets / maps

Another online petition for saving the Hesarghatta grasslands.

http://www.change.org/petitions/karnataka-government-don-t-destroy-hesaraghatta-grasslands?utm_medium=facebook&utm_source=share_petition&utm_term=share_button_modal

Dont know much about the workings, trappings and genuineness of the
