I think people are getting all kinds of ideas!!! Hold on please... :))

It's just that I want to make a well balanced set of slides - little bit
for everyone since we have a good number of participants from the fairer
sex (who probably have additional things to worry about - complexion and
all)... :))

It helps if we have some BBcuties - probably makes a lot of difference
if they speak up!;)

Let's see how it goes at Oracle/iGate. Approaching IIMB, JNC, MCC, St
Josephs, etc also now.

Mayank, What are you looking for? Pictures of Bangalore girls bicycling? Or, are you looking for girls to come and speak at your bike workshop?

Can you also send me your latest presentation? I will try to arrange for a workshop in my company, Novell. I will need the presentation ahead of time as I need to ensure that HR does not perceive any part of the presentation as offensive or sexual harassment (yes it sucks, but I need their approval before I can do anything).

Thanks,
Yogesh.

There's nothing like bikers coming and speaking... but I am always afraid of a poor turn out of audience in which case calling a lot of bikers is not a good idea. The snaps just for them to know that there are females fighting the traffic, dust, pollution, etc on the roads which are the usual complains people have.

The slides I shall complete and share shortly... Might have to make a special custom presentation for Novel then I guess! :)

can we watch our language please in public forums... "cuties" and
"chicks" et al are rather derogatory to women . maybe its generational
and i am just too old :) ... but why not just use the term women ?

Rekha, thank you! The thought passed my mind. But, after my last foray with bike vs byke, I worry about Vivek's next mail switching from "Les Yogesh" to "Herr Yogesh" as in "Sieg Hiel" with arms outstretched.

Mayank, I know you have run numerous corporate presentations. I would suggest BBL and BBG (Bangalore Bicycle Ladies and Bangalore Bicycle Gentlemen). Has a very nice Seville Row feel to it. At the end of the day, it still has a nice ring to it.

I am with Rekha on this, although I understand in the current context it is not meant that way and goes with flow of being cool et al ! Moreover I do know the word was coined by Neera so it is not really one kind v/s other !

If we need to keep the tempo in non serious manner, may be we should use gal (girlzz), dudess, etc.

Yes there is nothing deragatory about being cute but that is definitely not my primary identity :-) !

I totally agree with Annjuu, why should being called cute sound
derogatory? It doesn't mean that you cant be strong, daring,
adventurous, cool or with A PERSONALITY at the same time.

Rekha, I stared the "BBC = "Bangalore Biking Cuties" phrase and none
of the women felt offended by it, infact we gladly identified with it.
It is quite different from being called "Chicks" as the latter is
Sexist and it does offend me too (only) when BOYS use it in a sexist
context.

I think Mayank, is very right when he says we women have additional
things to worry about.
And trust me getting tanned and sun burnt is a VERY serious concern
for many of us women! So much so that i would avoid long rides if the
weather looks sunny. A tan takes ages to go, skin stays dry and
wrinkled for long and in my case my body temperature also goes up
making me feel feverish/sick and exhausted. IT IS A FACT that our
skins are thinner. Some of you must have seen me dressed like a clown
covered till the ankle in the Anchetti ride ! (though i was forced to
shed additional clothing later because of the heat).

Then apart from tan we are physically down few days of every month.

Then, there is the protective upbringing, or lack of exposure that
prevents many of us from riding in traffic due to FEAR

Then, there is the issue of safety - riding alone without being eve-
teased. Or at riding at nights, through deserted lanes. I find auto
guys always commenting, leering and swerving purposely in my way when
i ride alone in the early mornings or in less crowded areas.

There are definitely many more concerns. Other women can add them here
too.

Rekha, the guys in this Forum have always been very respectful towards
us women, always being politicaly correct lest they accidentaly hurt
our sentiments, have been sensitive to our needs and have gone out of
the way to include us and make us a part of the biking scene in
Bangalore. Mayank is including slides on us in his awareness campaign.
They have been very supportive and helpful towards new women riders
wanting to join on weekend rides. They make rules to accomodate us in
BBCh, make us feel special even if very few of us show interest or
turn up and when we measure no where close to them in the amount of
passion, hardwork, effort they put in.

So, i think we should basically JUST CHILL!

Cheers,
Neera

The threads these days have this thing of outliving all expectations - I
suddenly feel the need for an announcement only list lest people lose on
the events! :))

Neera wrote:
> So, i think we should basically JUST CHILL!

Thanks Neera - I m not changing the subject line so we can close this
thread! :)

Sorry people - I saw BBC expanded to this in earlier threads and I
re-used - I like the Cubs version much better though personally. I have
seen the use elsewhere and it is considered rather cool (possibly
elitist - not sexist) -

http://www.linuxchix.org/

is a good example! :)) I think spelling it that way makes all the
difference - Chix (closer to Chic! :D) more so like byke! ;)

The important thing is such questions - A lady at HP told that she loved
riding with her kids and other kids think she is a cool mom but she
feels uncomfortable when 'men' look at her!!! I had absolutely no clue
how to answer that - a possible dodo response wud be - "I m learning
kalari, u can too!" - bad answer as I m not sensitive to the issue - I
hv no understanding. So if a Neera, Rekha, Anita, etc answered this it
wud make all the difference.

I get a lot of constructive criticism post these sessions (sometimes
that is all I get! :D) - the last thing I want is the tag - 'sexist'. I
don't wish to sound condescending and I m even afraid to respond to the
safety queries - "There is this gal who bikes 17kms to work one way - if
she can do it so can u, just get on to the saddle and get over the
mental block". This might sound derogatory and some wud take it badly
but the intention is to say - "Women have to deal with a lot more issues
than men - safety being one of the most crucial. If there are this women
doing it - what the heck are u complaining about?" I hold each biker esp
so the ladies in very high regard but it wud be sad if all this is misread.

U know wat - if I din't get the snaps (since it wud be on the net and
all) I was going to tell the potential converts to actually come to
rides (challenging ones at that) to see the amazing bikers from the
fairer sex - for themselves!!! :))

That's that...

Yeah, women will be better able to handle questions, doubts and
apprehensions of women wanting to start riding. I will come for the
workshop (minus my bike). Annjuu It will be nice if you can join in

talking going on and less action, we will have to do something to
correct that. Wont we? :-). Lets do it!

Neera...excellent post...hey, don't worry, when I cycle, too, I cover up and look like a mummy...because I have moderate sun allergy that makes my skin break up and start weeping pustules!

Women cyclists do have some worries that men don't. Can you beat it, I am SO old and I still get idiotic comments (only, at my age it's so easy to not bother about them!)....

I have a suggestion to make. I know we all have different tolerance levels. Rekha advised wisely. It is not a bad idea to read your email once before sending it. I am not taking a dig at anyone with my post (Many of you have seen me in person, it is just not my style). We all have a common goal here, cycling.

Thank you Rekha, Manjula and Yogesh. It's good to know that there's
some balance here.

Let's look purely at results in terms of number of pictures Mayank
finally receives. It's fine if you want a little "nudgey-winkey" club
here, but if you really, really want to bring more women on board,
you have to understand how patronising asking for pictures of "cuties"
can be. (Not "is", but "can be".)

The manner of asking for pictures would have put off pretty much all
the women I know. I was put off--you don't have to be a woman to find
something like that patronising. (Similarly, a woman being okay with
it doesn't automatically prove it's non-offensive.) Maybe once I'm in
the inner circle of understanding here I'll know it's all a big
laugh... but until then, I've seen too many instances of the men
looking at the women's section (whether at a marathon or a bike race)
as a bit of a laugh... a place to award the "cutest smile prize" at
the starting line for example.

Mayank, I just read your reply more closely. "Fairer sex"? Really?

Linuxchix was started by a woman, and is a community aimed at women.
The use of "chix" is an ironic adoption of a derogatory word BY THE
COMMUNITY THE WORD REFERS TO. Its use like this robs the word of its
harmful power. It doesn't mean you should use it. You hear the N-word
used between black people all the time. It doesn't mean you can walk
into Compton, CA, and call the first black person you see a n_____. Oh
you can do it, but don't be surprised if the person isn't chilled out!

This is such basic stuff... I feel like a school teacher...

Gautham,

Thanks. However I am sure Mayank didn't mean it any deragotory sense and just playing along with the tone of the original thread.

Neera,

I might be preaching to the choir here (what with you being Dr on this subject) !

We all have a huge respect for what all the guys in BBC are doing. Many of them are very good friends of mine ! I for one want to be in their league (Take me as a desciple please!) and help them out in anyway I can.

I just don't understand why requesting not being called as a cutie would amount to disrespect to the men here ?

As for as me, I don't like to be identified as Cutie; Many women cyclists (Even today morning) did express the distaste to me !

In essense this is really cultural issue than a gender issue. Some people(men and women) do not have objections even to terms like babe, chicks etc but thats their personal view point. Issue here is why should someones will/opinion be imposed on other ?

Why can't we be just cyclists thats what this forum is for and everyone signed up for that ! Everything else like being handsome, beautiful, ugly, south indian, north indian, foreigner, caucasian, black, brown, men, women, lef handed, right handed, rich, poor, vegtarian, non-vegetarian, fashion concious, geek etc etc are all subsets and are best tackled at different forums !

Hmm... Yes, different people have different opinions and sentiments
and we must be sensitive and respect each others'.

Back to Mayank's main concern: Getting more women interested in
cycling and Addressing women's concerns through his presentation. I am
going for tomorrow's (25th) presentation and it will be great if more
women can join in.

Thanks Shubratha, my arm is getting better (btw everybody, i type with
both hands, staring at the keyboard :-) It will be nice to see you
tomorrow at the presentation.

Mayank Buddy, it's a tough job that you are doing, but you are making
a difference and we all appreciate it (though we dont express it as
much as we should). Keep going strong. All the best! See you tomorrow.

Neera,

Super ! Even I went to oracle office (atleast near to that) today. Got an sms from Mayank saying that there were very few people hence didn't go.

Mayank,

By the way send the ppt you mentioned. I could help with the organisation and adding content relevant to women.

Regards.
Manjula.

Purely from a communications point of view, how much more effective
would that message have been if it had said something like: “Need
representation from the women cyclists”? Well, you may only be asking
for photographs, but you probably would have also got involvement –
perhaps new ideas, women willing to participate more actively, to go
with you to make that presentation to corporates, to use their
networks too for the common good. Now you’ll have enough photographs,
sure, from several people who will be big enough to rise above the way
in which it was couched, but that seems so meagre compared to what it
could have been.

LOL. This brings to my mind a picture of one of those hardcore babudom
offices where everybody stands when the boss enters, and the slightest
criticism of his work is taken as a personal attack.

Mayank, macha. Byking Hottie. I hope *you* at least realise that
commenting on/criticising a word you used isn't the same as spitting
in your face? I love what you're doing, and look forward to helping
out however I can when I'm back in Blore.

This thread won't die and the subject line will remain! :))

Now you’ll have enough photographs,
sure, from several people who will be big enough to rise above the way
in which it was couched, but that seems so meagre compared to what it
could have been.

I think a few have taken this in very different light (not very lightly) altogether. A few have shared their snaps but I guess I won't be using it now. I have spent more time on this thread which I might have on the presentation! :) Working odd hours, lack of sleep n such is taking its toll.

Reminds me of this never ending discussion on "Asking age of a woman being rude". An young media student at the yatra found it sexist - she said it should be absolutely fine asking this question why the distinction - dunno how women will agree with her but there is a clear divide. There is this thing about offering help to hold a bag to a lady - can be rated anything from being Chivalrous to being a MCP. I m pathetic at this and don't want to get into any of it. Please forgive my insensitivity when composing the mail - was pressed against time - din't think much and just shot the mail much like the weight loss one. Will be 'very' careful in future.

Joshine, Neera & Lavanya were there at Symbiosis. After this thread many offered help for Oracle. My problem is if I don't see an audience large enuf I can't ask bikers to come - it has to be totally worth their time away from  office. How much I admire and respect all bikers is pretty obvious in the presentations - mebbe not - now I m not sure addressing bikers as a crazy lot might be derogatory but inviting them to join the crazy lot has worked. I think it is best I stop here as I won't have either the time or energy to reply further.

Please let this thread RIP. (I have a quaint feeling this will go the chicks dig my ride way! :) BTW I do sport that tee from BOTS reading this 'very' famous line. If anybody has a problem with that - kindly do let know).

Back to work! :)

Mayank, just FYI, a few clarifications:
1. The idea was not to denigrate what you're trying to achieve, but to
enhance it with a few new thoughts that may have not occurred to you
2. Offense was not taken at asking women to participate, but at the
(perhaps inadvertent) tone of patronage
3. The argument was not aimed at asking for photographs, it was about
using the word "cutie"
4. No apology was sought or required, all that was hoped for was that
some quiet thought would be given to the points made

That's all there is to it.

To the people in general on this forum who are making a point of
dismissing this as being taken too far: Please think a little about
defensiveness, irrational responses, and the using of labels like
"politically correct" as sort of weapons of mass disinformation.
