Hi,
I'm planning to buy Btwin MTB MUDGUARDs for my trek 4300.

My concern is whether they fit or not.

Has anybody used these?

Go to Decathlon and check out the different mudguards available. If they dont' fit you can get another one right there instead of ordering it online from reseller. Get them billed along with any member who is billing at the counter. Otherwise even RR Cycles should be stocking these products and they usually sell at the same or lesser price as that of member price at Decathlon.

Hi,

I have a Trek7.1 . I am planning to go to decathlon next week. I want
to buy mudguards for my bike among other things. I found six mudguard
models on their site. Can someone tell me which of the following will
fit my bike:

2. http://www.decathlon.in/Cycling-Mudguards-20-INCH-MUDGUARD

5. http://www.decathlon.in/Cycling-Mudguards-MTB-FRONT-MUDGUARD

Thanks,

They might fit but I doubt that they would work. You need real full
length mudguards which follow the curve of the wheel.

These look closest to what might work.

Take your bike along when buying the fenders. That way you avoid the hassle.

Nope, you got it wrong. I have no clue which will fit your bike. I
meant that that link shows a design of mudguards that 'might' work to
keep the mud off your back. The others won't work at all.

Which will fit your bike? You'll have to take your bike and see I
guess.

different needs for different people I guess :-)

I would hate to commute without mudguards. Even in dry weather we have
patches of overflowing sewage etc from manholes [in Indiranagar at
least].

Dunno where you ride though.

I visited RR cycles last Friday and discussed the mudguard fitting for
my Cannondale Quick 5. The mechanic asked me to get the bike so that
he could try to fit a good old Indian style mudguard. Will be trying
it out this weekend.

Rohan,

I see 5 mudguard models in BOTS website :
Bontrager Commuter MTB and four mudguards from decathlon. I want full
length mudguards for my bike. I assume none of these fits the bill.
From where can I buy full length mudguards for my bike ?

SKS fenders from any UK online store are probably the best you can
get.

I don't know if it was shared on this thread but one of the option is to
get a good water proof jacket for yourself - those that cover your upper
body and a lower which you can slip into. If you wear a bag then a
longer jacket that covers the bag is good or a separate cover for the
bag (u get at decathlon). I saw at Decathlon this water proof lower too
in the biking section. If looked good. If you wear that any amount of
much is not going to bother you also it saves you from the rain. Only
trouble you might sweat a bit! :)

I have not seen fenders work well but there is a nice thing for the
front - a small fentor that attaches to the frame. This is a good add on
in addition to the front mudguard. I had it in my trek 7100. Only
trouble was I never got a good solution for the back. If u do add mud
guards you can roll the bike on stairs (vertically - easy way to
transport) some trade off. I prefer not to have mudguards at the moment! :))

Water proof jacket will surely serve double purpose. But I start
riding immediately after it stops raining or in the morning when there
are puddles of water everywhere. I would look stupid wearing a
raincoat when the sky is clear just to avoid getting spattered on the
back :)

If it is a one time thing or so u can always slow down! :) If it is not
use the jacket or such. Most mud guards don't work - those that work are
really expensive. So make a choice for urself! :)

Like I said I have learnt to enjoy the muck until I find better options.

All the below mudguards work great.

http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/fenders.asp

A bit expensive, but it also keeps your drivetrain clean, and you
don't ever have to worry about riding thru water, even 2-3 inch deep
puddles. Shoes stay dry too.

Will take a pic and post tomorrow. they look great too.

Another option. I have SKS but do feel the need for mud flaps, these have flaps and seem very well reviewed.

I fitted full mudguards couple of months back from the LBS, had the
plastic fenders earlier. The fenders dont work, but the mudguards
certainly do--I have to ride thru lot of puddly stretches on my daily
commute, and I can see a huge reduction in the amount of muck on my
shoes/trousers/backpack and the drivetrain.

I love riding in the rain , I have a built in rain cover on my Targus
Laptop Backpack which is enough protection for water coming from the
sky. It is the filthy (sewage) water that dont like getting on me,and
the water is there on the road for a long time after it stops raining,
so the mudguard works pretty well for my use case.
What the mudguards dont solve is bike guys or cars splashing you as
they zip thru a mini lake ;-(

So definitely worth checking the LBS--you can ask for the TI cycles
mudguards -the full metal ones.

Guys, try a rain poncho. It'll fit over the backpack too and there
should be enough ventilation from the sides.

I have a poncho. http://www.decathlon.in/Hiking-Rain-jackets-PONCHO-100-BLUE Its great in the sense it covers my backpack and there's no chance of rain water getting in. The downside is ventilation is very less and sometimes it gets pretty sweaty inside if you are cycling in it. Its not that bad a problem when I use it on bike. Its basically a plastic sheet so breathability is nil.

Another option would be one of these rain jackets which seem to be breathable per their claim.
http://www.decathlon.in/Hiking-Jackets-ARPENAZ-50
With that, you can use one of these for the backpack

I have not tried this rain jacket + backpack cover combo myself but I guess it should work. I think some water might get in because there's still the gap between your back and the bag if its raining but it will protect from the muck. Both poncho and raincoat+backpack cover has its advantages and disadvantages.

But like Rahul said, you'd look dumb if you wear any of that and ride when its not raining.

Furthermore, you can find pools of water on the driest of days from leaking water pipes, sewages lines, people generously washing the front of their houses regardless of water crisis in the city and what not. I don't like slowing down much for all these when I can have a mudguard and just ride over them.  As it is there's so many obstacles while riding on street from vehicles cutting across to small potholes. I don't want another one in the form of smallest puddles of water to slow me down for the fear of spoiling my clothes on a commute. That's another thing to worry on commute which I simply don't want to. Even if I decide to get wet in rain, I'd prefer getting wet with the water that's falling from above and not the muck that's coming from down.  Why wear something and be uncomfortable on the commute when I can make my cycle wear a mudguard and forget about it. :)

Some people prefer mudguards, some don't. And I think on both sides, people have their own strong arguments. Basically a matter of personal choice and that no one can change.

And like Mayank said, fenders don't really work and front suspension compatible full mudguard sets are costly from what little I researched a month back.

Cheaper option would be to do with the available fenders and get backpack cover for everyday commute. That should keep the muck off your clothes. Mayank gave this idea to me.

I've not used either fenders or mud guards but have not liked the way they dangle around on tue bike. I've picked up the backpack cover from decathlon in preparation for the rain! I am waiting to use it in a few rains and decide about a jacket for myself too!

So far I got an opportunity to ride only in light drizzle and the backpack cover worked well!

Check out these fenders. No dangling, no noise or rattle, and complete
protection of your back, bike, drivetrain, shoes etc.

The downside is ventilation is very less and sometimes it gets pretty sweaty inside if you are cycling in it. Its not that bad a problem when I use it on bike. Its basically a plastic sheet so breathability is nil.

I think some water might get in because there's still the gap between your back and the bag if its raining but it will protect from the muck. Both poncho and raincoat+backpack cover has its advantages and disadvantages.

Poncho rocks. Costs just abt 100 bucks or so at Decathlon.

Please bear in mind the 100 bucks one won't last you long. There was a
better quality one at DS for around 700 which is much better (fluroscent
color making it very visible also). The poncho can be used elsewhere
also so do invest wisely! :)

A bit late but, thanks for this info, most helpful. Suggest you add it to http://notebook.bumsonthesaddle.com/ so that others can find it easily later :)

Deepak, awesome kit! I have SKS fenders but mine don't have the black plastic splashguard that you have on the front, those would be useful.
Love the dynamo and light too.

Thanks Arvind. Those links don't work for me. How did you get them to
work?

For others - pics are here too.
