Vivek and I are planning for Leh-Ladakh in September and need bike bags to pack our bikes. I know that there were DIY bike bag designs being shared earlier but cannot find them in archives. Can anyone here please share the bag or design for us to get something custom made? The btwin bike bag is very flimsy so not considering it.

Bike bag is not absolutely necessary unless you are very keen about it.

I took my bike like this to Spiti Valley and then to Mumbai. Indigo will allow like this, not sure about other carriers.

As Sayi points out, a bike bag isn't truly necessary. A well wrapped up bike like shown in the pictures ought to be acceptable by most airlines. That said, a bike bag is more convenient to reuse; you'd have to be very careful while unpacking, if you want to be able to use the same material to repack the bike, when done. Also, a bike bag, with its better quality of construction, allows you to pack other items, including small ones, without the risk of things getting lost/falling out.

When I use my bike bag, apart from the dismantled bike, the bag also holds the pedals, the rear derailleur screws and handlebar mount and screws in a small plastic pouch, handlebar bag with contents, a full sized pump, helmet, biking shoes, tools, oil can, ..
I can't imagine one being able to pack all of that into this kind of wrapping, and not suffer extreme anxiety right through the journey.

Shankar / others,

Please post updates. I am looking to take my bike to Guwahati in September, so would be interested in the info.

My plan was to get RR Cycles to box it up here (in a carton). & I would look to do that / get that done in Guwahati on the way back as well.

Other than some concern like the carton getting damaged in the forward journey, & not being in a condition to be re-used, any concerns about just using a carton?

Hi DB
I had a poor experience of bike sent via a courier using carton and gunny bag.Rear detailer was left attached and got bent..making a hole through carton !
You will need to disassemble and reassemble the bike..or get it done by those who do it regularly.
Do make sure derailers are removed and ideally separately packed.

Warm regards

Doc,

RD should never, ever be left on the bike frame while transporting. It cannot take any lateral stress. It's nearly totally safe, when the wheel is on, but fully exposed, when the wheel is off. Pedals are also strict no-nos for leaving on the bike, as they can rip holes through carton or damage the bike bag's sides.  Some bus companies here allow the bike to be loaded into the bottom storage compartment in near full state, and I'd once left the pedals on, but they resulted in the bike moving quite a lot, while the bus was in motion; without the pedals, the bike would have been more flatly against the floor, and hence wouldn't have moved around so much.

By the way, I just had an fb conversation with Lee Fancourt, one of Open's fellow riders in this year's TABR, about the rear derailleur hanger failure he sustained, during his race. He confirmed that the RD had indeed been left on his bike, during transportation, which is probably when it sustained damage, resulting in its ultimate failure.

Oh! I removed the hanger along with the derailleur. I don't think it would have survived the transport. In fact, my chain rings were damaged, but I could correct the roundness and some teeth are blunted still. But it was okay. I didn't want to remove the crank as I didn't want to carry so many tools.

Doc, When I said box it up, I meant in knocked down state. I suppose it will be similar to what the bike is shipped as from the factory. Handle bar, pedals, wheels, saddle & rear derailleur would be removed.

I plan to take the bike with me on the plane as checkin baggage (yet to check with the airlines on procedures, charges).

Wanted to understand what might be the pros/cons of using a carton, as opposed to a bike bag. Since the point where I will reassemble the bike before the ride & disassemble the bike after the ride, will be the same, I can keep the bike bag there (so I don't need to carry it with on the tour). If I can have a good bag made with tarpaulin material, I suppose that would be very good. But need the design/workmanship to be good. Don't want it coming apart enroute.

If a carton will work as good, I suppose I will save a bit. Also, it is pretty much a one-hop sort of a journey for the bike. I don't need to carry it to other towns etc. in packed state to/from the airport. Just need to get to a hotel or bike shop from the airport, where I will unpack /reassemble, & reverse when I am travelling back.

Ok. The one you are borrowing, was someone's "DIY", or something from a store? Just wanted to get specifics, incase it was "DIY".

Best of luck for your trip plans.

thx, -{db}.
